Exercises, Movie, Asparagus.

I just spoke to the kinesiologist on Zoom about joining the online exercise classes. Turns out they are on at 10:00 every weekday, well not next Monday as it is a holiday here (Victoria Day). Only trouble for me is that all those phone calls I was getting yesterday mean that I am mostly booked up next week in the mornings. I kinda groused about the time - as I said, it's not that I'm not up but not always dressed, she said I was quite welcome to join in my PJs!! Anyway, I think I can join them on Wed. next week. I've gotta do something. I move around a lot but not enough of me moves with purpose. For instance, I didn't know that waving your arms around above your head was good for your heart. I learned that a few months ago.

Just watched the original movie of Ransom with Glenn Ford and Donna Reed. What a great movie. I had wanted to see the more modern version when it came out but didn't get to watch it. I thought Glenn Ford was brilliant in this version.

Oh why, oh why, doesn't the weather warm up. All these asparagus recipes are making me hungry for those luscious spears. Apparently Barrie's Asparagus farm was on TV because they have lost their first crop. I was told they were planting more. People don't understand that asparagus grows from crowns. You can't just plant seeds, they have to be planted at least a couple of years ahead and then they produce asparagus in the spring for a number of years until they need to be given a rest.

Tuscan Roast Asparagus

Asparagus and tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper and roasted to perfection with a topping of

melted Parmesan cheese.

1 1/2 lbs asparagus, trimmed
1 Tbs oil
1 Tbs lemon juice
1 tsp lemon zest
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 tsp oregano (or Italian seasoning)
1 large tomato, sliced thinly
1/2 cup parmigiano reggiano (Parmesan), grated

Toss the asparagus and tomatoes in the oil, lemon juice and zest, salt and pepper, place the asparagus on a baking sheet in a single layer with the slices of tomato on top, sprinkle on the Parmesan and roast in a preheated 400°F/200°C oven until they start to caramelize, about 15-20 minutes, mixing half way through.

  1. Nothing wrong with showing up in your jams. No asparagus for me this year from the farmer as we won't go to Erie this year.

  2. Sigh on the lost crop.
I suspect Zoom has seen a LOT worse things than people exercising in their pjs.
    Go for it.

    1. Sad isn't it, but who would have thought we would get snow in May Sue. I am sure, but I wear a nightdress, I will not be exercising in that but will get dressed.

  3. Hi Jo - the asparagus should appear soon ... it hides doesn't it - and is a specialist crop to grow. Someone brought me some this week - now I'm going to ask them to bring it for me regularly for the next few weeks - they were delicious too. It was from one of the big supermarkets ... which I can't get to at the moment ... but they go - so will help when they go for their shop.

Even 10 minutes of just moving around each limb, or part of bod, will help and loosen you up a little more. Take care - Hilary

    1. I think it does Hilary, not an expert, certainly not used to the kind of weather we have been having. Enjoy your asapargus.

You are right, I do move around a lot as a caregiver, but it's not structured exercise.

  4. I think that asparagus is under lockdown from Coronavirus, Jo, and is only allowed out by special permit. It may not be able to visit Barrie's store as it normally does. I have not seen a single stalk of it so far this year. I will be visiting SpruceHaven this afternoon and will check how their crop is doing. I know their rhubarb is coming along nicely, but that is a much hardier plant. I may snag some of that. As I glance outside my window a beautiful male Baltimore Oriole is feeding on one of the oranges. Now that's a good start to the day. Enjoys yours whatever it may bring.

    1. I never thought of that David, we will have to get the government to release it. Barrie's has rhubarb too, usually. I am envious about the Baltimore Oriole, never seen one up close.

    2. And I can't even offer to bring you here to see one Jo. You have to climb steps to get in through the front door and then, because the house is what I think they call a side split there are stairs up or down to every level, and in order to even get to a washrooms from the entrance level it is upstairs or down. Miriam and I credit the constant mountaineering for keeping us fit and agile!

    3. My step kids have houses a bit like that. I just hope you never get arthritis David. I can do stairs, you should see the bowling alley, but not my favourite thing by any means. Matt could never do them.

    4. If we get arthritis it will be condo time!

    5. Well I hope you don't, either of you.

  5. That recipe looks good. I an going to show it to my hubby who does the cooking here. I didn't know how asparagus grew, that was interesting to read. I think that Zoom exercise class would be good to do. I think a lot of people are going to be a bit out of shape when they resume exercising at gyms, etc. The waiter who served us the other day was saying how tight his leg muscles were from walking around at work. He said he had exercised while off but hadn't walked as much as he did at work.

    1. Odd, I replied to this but it has disappeared. You don't cook Betty? I hope the classes work out for me but next week I have 101 other things in the mornings, so will probably only make one session. I never thought about waiters in that light.

  6. I just went out and cut the lawn, fertilized it, sprayed weed killer and sprinkled something to keep the g--d--- rabbits from destroying everything. Why doesn't someone come up with a virus to get rid of them. My exercises are done for the day!

    1. That's enough exercise for anybody Denise. Poor rabbits, they don't know they aren't supposed to eat everything. Actually, they did didn't they, mixamatosis (sp).

    2. I don't think Eastern cottontails get that virus. Too bad.

    3. I'm glad they don't it was a pretty awful disease.
