Book Review, Princess Margaret, Bowling, Cooking,

You Beneath Your SkinYou Beneath Your Skin by Damyanti Biswas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Horrifying. But at the same time a gripping story. From my perspective, the ending was unresolved, but then so was Gone with the Wind. I certainly would never want to go to Delhi. There is an abundance of corruption and I want to see people get their comeuppance, but that is only my feeling. The thought that a charity is needed for people, mainly women, who have acid thrown in their faces is also horrifying. Is Delhi worse than our western cities? I don't know. I blindly believe our society is more civilised, but is it? I highly recommend this book for two reasons, an excellent read and to support the charities Damyanti has chosen to donate the proceeds to, both of which assist women, the first, those who have acid thrown in their faces. The second underprivileged children. The Chanv Foundation and Project Why.

I'm not all that good at this book reviewing business.

Just watched a documentary about Princess Margaret. Most of her story occurred whilst we still lived in England although it appears some of the later relationships began just as we were emigrating. I wondered why I didn't remember anything about it. She certainly led a very different life from the rest of the royal family at the time although since her day, things have loosened up considerably. In a way she had a hard life, she was neither fish nor fowl as it were. It was an interesting documentary though.

Weather permitting we are, of course, bowling on Monday afternoon. I do hope I do better than the last couple of times. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Basically a quiet weekend and other than a bit of cooking, we didn't do much at all. Saturday I did a Pot Roast Flank Steak - cooked it before but this time I gave it less time and it wasn't overdone. It was delicious. Mind you, there is no way it came out pink. I used white wine vinegar too, don't have Apple Cider Vinegar.

Instant Pot Marinated Flank Steak, Dump and Go Dinner

1 lbs Flank Steak
1/4 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cups Olive Oil
2 Tbs Onion Soup Mix, Dried

1. Set Instant Pot to sauté.

2. Add flank steak and brown on each side.

3. Add vinegar, Worcestershire, olive oil and onion soup mix.

4. Lock cover into place and seal steam nozzle.

5. Cook on high pressure for 25 minutes.

6. Naturally release pressure for 5 minutes and quick release remaining pressure.

7. I poured off as much oil as I could to use the juices for gravy.

Servings: 2

  1. So, I got the book, but perhaps this is not something I want to read over the holidays. Lots of good reviews on Goodreads.
Starting watching the new season of The Crown on Netflix last night. One episode centered on Margaret and her visit to America. I saw that PBS program about her awhile back. Quite the character.
Good luck with bowling. Good or bad scores, it gets you two out and about.

    1. Not really depressing Denise, but quite a story and it makes you think. However, you may prefer not to read it now LOL.

She was, wasn't she. I felt a bit sorry for her though.

Yes, you are right. Keep your fingers crossed anyway please.

  3. You did a fine book review. I'm like you, I like to think we are more civilized. I often listen to how we complain and complain about things and truly we are blessed. It helps to be reminded what real problems are.

I'll have to watch the Princess Margaret special. I watched The King last night about Henry V. It was good. I enjoy royal stories!

    1. Thanks Liz. I like to think it, but I am not totally convinced.

      Not seen The King.

  4. Hi Jo - I thought it was a really good novel - and read it like a murder mystery - which makes it easier to absorb. Brilliant writing I thought and so valuable to support the two charities ...

Good luck with bowling today - cheers Hilary

    1. So did I Hilary. I enjoyed it. But I wanted them to get their comeuppance though, didn't you?

      Thanks.

  5. Too bad about the Apple Cider Vinegar.
I only use raw apple cider vinegar.
Though I use white for cleaning the house.
Very, very tasty in peppers and other dishes.
The ACV, that is. Not the cleaning vinegar.
Happy Bowling Day. Hope you have a blast.

    1. Yup, we use white vinegar for cleaning too. Got fed up with sticky floors in particular. Never been terribly keen on cider so not sure whether I would like the vinegar Ivy.

    2. Raw apple cider vinegar doesn't taste like apple cider from the Farmer's Market or apple places. But, it doesn't taste like white either. The RACV has more depth but I totally get it if it's not for you. There are some brands that suck. Braggs is nice though.

    3. I always use white, or red, wine vinegar Ivy. I find the taste of that to be good. For pickling I use the ordinary white vinegar.

  6. Great book review and how sad and angersome that women are treated in such a deplorable way but I am not surprised. I really liked Princess Margaret who was not allowed to marry the man she truly loved. She was quite a beauty in her heyday and had a rebellious streak.

    1. Not exclusively women, but mostly Birgit. Dreadful though, I agree. I felt sorry about she and Townsend but she was happy with Armstrong Jones for a number of years.
