Slippers, Movie, Restaurants, Canning,

Matt has some slippers he has had for 100 years, well it seems like it, I wanted to replace them a while back but he wouldn't let me. This weekend I received some I had ordered from Amazon and much to my disgust they were too narrow, but not one word of protest/ So, I am sending them back and have ordered some which, I hope, will be wide enough. One thing, they are washable, as are the ones I have these days, and it makes them much nicer to use. Of course this means I have to stagger to the post office. Our car has been outside since Friday, Saturday everything that was wrong with me decided to let me know so I really couldn't go move the car and today I couldn't be bothered having told the deputy super about it, he said not to worry, so I didn't.

Saturday night I started watching Lawrence which is one of my favourite movies, in fact Peter OToole was one of my favourite actors. He was trained at the Bristol Old Vic (in England of course) and they produced some excellent actors in their time. However, I turned off the movie about half way as it wasn't going to finish til around midnight and then I had several tasks I always do before bed so it would have been gone 1 by the time I hit the sack. Matt was bored anyway, doesn't understand it any more I think. Of course, I do have it on VHS, taped it many a long year ago, don't know what state it is in but so far all the tapes I have watched lately have been in fairly good condition.

I kept telling myself I was going to order in this weekend but I never did. I am just as happy cooking most of the time, delivered food has still got to be served to Matt. Now if I could go out, different matter. American restaurants are opening I wish ours were. I keep getting emails from the Red Lobster telling me what they are doing about Covid-19 now they have opened their restaurants, but they are taking about the States. Doug Ford, our Ontario Prime Minister has not permitted ours to open yet.

Managed to get three more jars of asparagus done this weekend despite my aches and pains plus I canned a whole bunch of cut off stems (my bottles only take 6 inch stems) which are just in the fridge and can (and should) be eaten in the next week or two. Oh I forgot to tell you, which will delight you all I know, I have ordered some more lamb's kidneys from Victoria St. Market. I have also run out of Italian sausages so need to get some whilst I am there.

Hmm, the only trouble with this recipe, I used to be able to get really nice olives at my grocery store, but I don't seem to be able to these days. I guess I need to go into the store but that's easier said than done.

Grilled Asparagus and Tomatoes in a Kalamata Olive and Feta Vinaigrette

Char grilled asparagus topped with juicy tomatoes in a salty and tart kalamata olive and feta dressing.

1 1/2 lbs asparagus, trimmed
1 Tbs oil
salt and pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups tomato, sliced
1/4 cup kalamata olive and feta dressing

1. Toss the asparagus spears in the oil, salt and pepper and grill over medium-high heat until crisp-tender and slightly charred.

2. Serve topped with the tomatoes and the kalamata olive and feta dressing and enjoy!

  1. I hope your aches and pains are diminishing.
Our restaurants are starting to open - but not in a way where they can hope to make a profit.
A maximum of twenty guests and signficiant social distancing. Some are opening in shifts, but it will take a long time before things return to any semblance of normality.

As far as I know, none of ours are opening yet.

  2. I can't imagine ordering footwear on line, slippers or any other kind, but I know it is done all the time and I realize it is convenient for you, Jo. The pair of slippers I am wearing now came from Costco. They were inexpensive, and I really like them. Have worn them every day since I got them. I am currently reading a book about Omega-3 and its benefits, and the kinds of foods than contain it. Suffice it to say that lamb's kidneys and Italian sausage are not on the list!!

    1. I never thought of Costco, but there again, I would order online David.

No, but fish is, salmon in particular, and we eat a lot of that.

    1. So it seems Jan. It was nice when they had the open carts but I understand that is all packed up now. Sigh.

  4. Hi Jo - glad you got some more asparagus canned. New slippers always a good idea - hope the next pair fit properly. It's funny ... we had the most amazing Kalamata olives in South Africa ... but I've never been able to find them since - I look, but don't hunt down! Enjoy the rest of the film once you get back to it ... take care - Hilary

    1. So was I Hilary, an effort, but to me worth it. A good idea, especially for Matt. We used to have good olives at Zehrs Hilary but since C-19 they don't have them any more.

  5. I am glad you could get your canning done. I wish I could say I did a lot of crafting...none. I cleaned the bathroom and swept. I printed off stuff for my friend who can't go to his work and he has no printer. He and his brother visited Saturday. Sunday, I made salads and deviled eggs. Just standing doing that was enough for me to see stars. My brother came over and we social distanced met up. He brought me birthday cake and I just finished having a piece at my lunch time and now I am feeling it...I know so much better but it is good but I pay for it big time. I have gained Covid fat..ughhh. I know better. I love Lawrence of Arabia-a truly great epic film. I know what you mean about the slippers. My mom didn't want to give hers up and I didn't know what to do but the home just took hers away and put on the new ones I bought and my mom never said a word. She forgot about her old slippers from the get go. I hope you get the proper ones this time

    1. Wish I could do things like cleaning bathrooms and sweeping Birgit. I can putz around a little, I am surprised you can do more. Working in the kitchen is hard, do most of my prep sitting at the dining table. Nice he brought you a cake - Happy Birthday. I have been gaining too but can't blame Covid, ever since I started eating after coming out of hospital, I can't stop myself. I love Lawrence of Arabia, fantastic movie. Very long though. He seemed amenable to the new slippers the other day so let's hope. PSW just phoned with the time for tomorrow. I told them afternoon would be no good as he wouldn't undress once he is dressed and so far they have been able to do it.
