VHS, Saturday Supper, Bleeding Finger,,

A friend fixed it so we can watch both VHS and DVD movies these days and, being in isolation, I fished out one which was of a Pavarotti concert which took place in Hyde Park, London, in 1991. Princess Diana and Prince Charles were in the audience, everyone getting soaked. The VHS was in pretty good condition considering it is 30 years old and the sound was good too. This is the second VHS we have watched lately. Having watched Saving Mr. Banks for a second time, I fished out our copy of Mary Poppins. I knew there was a glitch in the tape, but after all these years, the glitch, when it got to it, stopped the tape completely. Now I am undecided, should I buy a DVD of it or not. The glitch happens just when Mr. Banks is being "fired" by the bank big wigs. If you've never seen Mary Poppins, the original, you should. It was a great movie and Walt Disney did a wonderful job with it which is what Saving Mr. Banks is all about. I have a lot of VHS movies and some personal stuff which I recorded. There is even some of my first wedding and honeymoon which took place in 1962, i.e. almost 58 years ago. I wonder what condition that is in.

Saturday night for supper I cooked a large sirloin steak which I had bought at VSM the other day. It was excellent, their meat may be a bit pricey but it's good stuff. I made a sauce with it, shallots, red wine, Balsamic vinegar, it is really delicious with beef. I even managed to get the knife good and sharp, I am getting better at sharpening knives.

I somehow bashed my finger, just below the knuckle, the other day. On my desk drawer which was shut. Stupid thing won't stop bleeding. Having trouble keeping the Bandaids on particularly with all this extra hand washing. Every time it falls off I think the wound is OK and then an hour or so later, I'm bleeding to death again.

Sunday night PBS had Jonathan Antoine on again, same concert as before, and, as before, we missed the first bit. I would absolutely have loved to go to the concert in Toronto, next October, but not possible. His voice is so fantastic.I was in tears, this song is so sad, from Les Miserables, and to hear Jonathan sing it, words fail me. Apparently he did lose some weight, but I think he needs to lose a tad more. I am planning to buy his DVD being released at the end of April

Here's a simple recipe from Kevin Lynch, one of my favourite cookery writers

Chicken and Avocado Burritos

Burritos stuffed with juicy chicken, cool and creamy avocado, oozy gooey melted cheese, spicy salsa
verde and sour cream!

4 burrito sized tortillas (corn tortillas for gluten-free), warmed
1 lb cooked chicken, sliced or shredded
1 large avocado, diced
1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
1/4 cup salsa verde
1/4 cup sour cream or greek yogurt
2 Tbs cilantro, chopped

1. Assemble the burritos, optionally toast, and enjoy!

Servings: 4

Tips: Use taco lime grilled chicken, cilantro lime grilled chicken or tequila lime grilled chicken instead of plain chicken

  1. Do you have Prime from Amazon? They have a lot of movies and shows on there. I watched "The Words" tonight. Excellent movie.

I've had those cuts that want to keep bleeding. I would try direct pressure with toilet paper. I don't know if that's smart, but it's my fix.

    1. I should have Liz, but I'm not very good at this technical stuff on TVs so I don't know how to get it to work. Apart from which, good movies don't necessarily appeal to Matt if he doesn't know what's happening. Usually choose something, often the same somethings, that are music.

I did try pressure on it Liz and I think, hope, it has finally stopped bleeding.

  2. Knuckle wounds are the worst aren't they? They bleed and bleed and bleed (even without extra washing).
    How are you finding isolation?
I am not quite there yet, but edging closer by the day. I go to the shops (when necessary) and then come home.

    1. This one is certainly a pain in the butt Sue. Think its stopped now.

I have been very much isolated since Matt got Alzheimer's this is just worse.

I go to the store for food but they just put my order, which I have sent online, straight in my trunk. No contact.

  3. Pavarotti, in his prime, was arguably the best tenor of all time. The fellow who comes very close is Jüssi Bjorling, who tragically drank himself to death before he reached the age of forty. Last night for dinner we had sechuan pork, an old favourite of ours. We call it fast food. Cooking in a wok is so quick! from the time we start to chop till the moment we eat is less than twenty minutes. Stay well, Jo.

    1. I think so David. I love to watch his concerts. We have some on VHS and some on DVD. Vaguely remember Bjorling. This young man, Jonathan Antoine, is excellent. The computer doesn't do him justice. In think when he is a little older he will be top notch. He does Nessun Dorma just as well as Luciano did.

So do you do delivery? Thanks I am doing my best. Hope you are too

    2. I am afraid the delivery service is on strike, Jo!!!

    3. That's a pity, you should negotiate with their union David.

  4. Would you believe that all the tortilla wraps were gone from the local grocery store? There was bread but no wraps of any kind.
Are you on blood thinners? My son has to be very careful with cuts. Years ago I had problems with blood-clotting due to a drug I was taking. Very annoying.
As for VHS, I donated all of my tapes years ago. I do have some tapes of my appearances on local TV shows and have thought about having them converted to DVD, but why? I should ask my kids if they want them preserved.

    1. That surprises me Denise. They are easier to use I guess.

Yes, I am on blood thinners, never thought about that but usually I don't bleed that long.

Pity I didn't know about your VHS tapes. I have a lot of stuff on mine which I am enjoying again. Yes, see if your kids want them, they may.

    2. I had to give my tapes to the Salvation Army cause the library didn't want them. I got rid of mine more than ten years ago, but did buy some of the same movies on DVD. MY VHS player is sitting in the basement.

  7. I have VHS tapes too but I can't play them. I taped a lot of movies when Elwy Yost, from Saturday Night at the Movies was on TVO. I miss him and I want to get these taped interviews on DVD so i can watch them even if they look rough. I watched The Sound of Music which is one of my favourites and I have not seen it in a long time but still remember all the words to the song. i remember when it made its television premiere, I was sooooo excited. I remember telling my dad that I must watch this movie and we all sat down as a family but I don't think my brother was around...I think he went out to play baseball. I was enthralled but even then I recall asking my mom if those mountains they are crossing won't lead them to Berchtesgaden, Germany. Yup, I had already been to Europe with my mom by that time and we were in Salzburg which is a beautiful city. I hope you are keeping well. I am pissed off because i am bleeding again and have to call the doctor about this. You must be on bloodthinners so I hope you have enough bandaids and maybe you need to put gauze on first and then more than one bandaid or just surgical tape

    1. In 1962 I was Julie Andrews in Sound of Music on stage in London. It was marvellous. How typical they would get the wrong mountains. Sorry you are bleeding again Birgit. Hope the docs can help you, mine are only working by phone. Yes, I am on bloodthinners but don't usually have a problem. It seems to have finally stopped now I'm pleased to say.

  8. OK, for whatever the reason my first comment disappeared! I would put gauze and wrap it it with surgical tape because you must be on blood thinners. I watched The Sound of Music which I love. We watched Expendables 3 and we watched The Banger Sisters on TV...not bad..not great, but not bad. I have VHS tapes as well and many films with the interviews by Elwy Yost from Saturday Night At The Movies. I miss him and that program. I have to get these placed on a DVD.

    1. Yes, it disappears because I have comment moderation on. I was getting a little tired of the Spam by the guy who was recommending a doctor for his intimate problems.

  9. Hi Jo - glad the finger seems to have stopped bleeding ... those kind of 'cuts' are so frustrating. I can understand about the limitations of Matt's challenges - so difficult for you ... then the shopping. Take care and all the very best - Hilary

  10. You are right Jo, that song gave me goosebumps. I hope we won't be singing this in the near future... :(
I'm glad your finger is better! BTW, I read your blog every day, just don't always comment. I wanted you to know I think of you every single day... :)
