DST, Time, Stove.

Now there's odd. I got up about my usual time on Sunday to find Matt all teed because he had missed his morning TV. Neither of us realised the clocks went forward this weekend. Yes, I had seen it on the internet but I thought it was for England because we had already done ours. Of course we hadn't but it doesn't seem like several months ago when we last changed our clocks and were groaning about how useless it all is these days. Obviously when one is retarded retired it doesn't make much difference although we would be late for bowling on Monday. Mind you I would have been late for my champers on Sunday morning, very serious. LOL.

It seems my perception of time is somewhat skewed these days. I was trying to adjust the thermostat
on our stove - following the instructions in the book - because some things have not been cooking properly. I couldn't seem to achieve what the book said I should, so I phone GE. The girl wanted to know how long we had had the stove, I said it was delivered last year. I looked back in this blog the next day and it appears to have been delivered in April 2014. I can't believe we have been using the damned thing for 2  years. They told me it was under warranty, but I don't think so now bearing in mind how long it has been here. One thing it didn't cook properly was the turkey. However, the white meat was enough cooked that we could eat it. I put a thermometer in the oven when I set it for 425°F the other day and when it pinged, the thermometer read about 350°F. I didn't occur to me before that it was the stove, thought it was my fault. It doesn't fit in our kitchen either, it has to stand a good 2 inches out from the back wall. The stove is OK, it's the back panel which won't fit.

I was looking for a recipe for Baby Bok Choy and all the ones I could find at first included Soy Sauce. As I already had Soy Sauce in my main dish, I didn't want more. I finally came across this one. Matt didn't think much of it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. A very simple dish to prepare and tasty in my opinion.

Baby Bok Choy With Garlic

Not sure where I found this baby bok choy recipe, it's either from Gourmet or Bon Appetit. It's quick, delicious, and compliments any Asian stir-fry

1/8 cup unsalted butter
5 tsp minced garlic (or to taste)
12 -14 baby bok choy (washed thoroughly)
1 1/2 cups chicken broth

1. Melt butter in heavy large skillet over moderate heat.

2. Add minced garlic and saute about 2-3 minutes until barely golden/brown.

3. Add bok choy and chicken broth and simmer until bok choy is tender, turning occasionally, about 8 minutes.

4. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Use a slotted spoon to serve.

Servings: 4

Have a great day

  2. Hi Jo - ours goes forwards in 2 weeks ... but we get so used to being told - yet then completely forget ... Stoves - I agree ... I can't understand them - I do what I want and that's it ... and the washing machine - such is life. I've lived with the car clock being an hour ahead all winter - in 2 weeks it'll be fine!! Hope the champers made up for it ... cheers Hilary

    1. Yes I know Hilary, which is what tees me off. We altered ours because the US altered theirs. I guess it was all about trading etc. Yes the champers helped, but I could have drunk some more LOL

  3. Jo, everything seems like 'just yesterday'. I have the same problem. It's odd that a standard stove will not fit in your kitchen. And you have reminded me that it is probably time for me to recalibrate my oven too. When I took cooking classes we always baked one cookie first to check the time required. I don't do that at home and last time I baked cookies they over-baked, so maybe the oven is too hot again.

    1. It certainly seems like yesterday when we were discussing putting the clocks back Denise. How do you recalibrate your oven? That is what I was trying to do but it didn't work like it said in the book. My oven is definitely not up to temp.

    2. Heat the oven to 350 F. Place one cup of 70 degree F water in an oven safe cup or dish and place in the oven. Set timer for fifteen minutes. When timer goes off remove the cup and check the temperature. It should read 150 F. You adjust the oven up or down and try again.

    3. I have a special thermometer to do that with Denise. However, I finally managed to do what the book says. You have to press two buttons at the same time, difficult. Once it says SF in the window, you adjust the temp but it only does it once so you have to keep doing it. You can increase by half a degree a time. Have now done 3 degrees, I think.

    4. I also have a thermometer, but prefer the water method.

    5. I will give it a try then.

  4. Our 'clock changes' are always the last Sunday in the month (March and October) so probably a little easier to remember than the Canadian ones in the middle of the month? I love the Spring one as we get more afternoon/evening light but I dread the Autumn one - although these days we can escape to our house in the Canaries to avoid a lot of the dull UK Winter weather. 1. Ours used to be the same Sue until the US decided to change. Light is, of course, important to you as an artist. Lucky you to be able to avoid Much of the winter.

  5. We should just switch to the current time world-wide and stay there.
Bummer your stove is being crappy already. It's not that old.

    1. We should Alex, except on the other side of the world it wouldn't work.

Luckily if it really acts up, we don't have to pay for it.

  6. My stove usually burns the items, when the thermostat screws up. Although right now the oven doesn't work at all. I've already replaced the coils once. Bought a small oven that sits on the counter, works fine. Cook chicken in the crock pot. Brand new appliances don't last long at all. Already need to replace stove and refrigerator. They used to last 30 years or more, lucky to get 3 years now!

    1. We have a small toaster oven which sits on the counter Yolanda, but the big stove works OK except for the temperature. Luckily if anything goes wrong with fridge or freezer, we just yell and get a new one. We have had 2 new stoves since we've been here and one fridge. Can't complain.

  7. I hate this time change! it wonks me out for lack of a better word. I didn't know one has to recalibrate ones stove? I have never done that and not sure what i am supposed to do anyway. I bought my stove, used, back in 1999 and it still is good. It is smaller than the average stove because I could not get the basic size one into the spot I have but it suits its purpose.

    1. Seems like most people do hate the time change Birgit. That has lasted you well then especially as you bought it second hand.

  8. The time change doesn't bother me at all now that I work at home, but I always hated it before. I've had my stove and oven for years but I learned to adjust temperatures about 50 degrees with it early on. Mine was too hot.

    1. It bothers me somewhat Susan. Does make a difference if you are working at home though. I didn't really know you could calibrate a stove before. Slow process though.

  9. Many years ago I forgot to change the clocks until about halfway through Sunday. It was a real kick in the teeth to lose an hour that way. Bad enough it happens overnight. I'm still trying to adjust.

  10. We don't have daylight saving here which is stupid. I will be leaving and arriving home in the dark which is a pain. Time is getting stranger and stranger I feel.

    1. We're all complaining about it and you appear to wish you had DST Pinky. It's mostly a damned nuisance.

  11. I loathe daylight saving because it doesn't really work where we're located - and I'm not the only one. We've had trials and four referenda about it over time here and it was comprehensively rejected. Most of the east coast states do use DST which just adds another layer of confusion to the existing multiple time zones. Now I just have to remember when the east changes so I don't miss my favourite program, too.

    1. We have lots of time zones here to Helen and there are some States and I think provinces who do not change anyway. All very confusing. Much easier when I lived in England LOL
