Yesterday, the 4th, was Matt's 81st birthday. We really didn't do a lot except go bowling. Matt must have thought it was a special day as he got good scores and beat the you know what out of me. Enjoyed ourselves just the same. It's actually exactly a year ago, to the day if not the date, since his 80th bowling party where we had a celebration at the alley. In the evening we had a couple of drinks before supper which included smoked salmon as a special. He then watched Cool Hand Luke which was on TCM.
Saw the pest control people this morning and told them I had killed a bed bug in my bed that morning and another in the living room. I am also getting bitten which Matt is not, lucky so and so. They are coming in to our place again next Thursday. I moaned about the length of time but they said there was some reason for it but don't really know what it was. They were in the elevator trying to leave at the time. I have discovered that most of what they do is steam cleaning because bed bugs have become resistant to many, if not all, sprays. If you are interested, there is an article about it from the BBC which a friend sent me today.
Today, Friday, we are off to the Mandarin for lunch. Matt gets his free birthday meal so long as he takes 3 adults with him. It being New Year, I will be indulging myself in dumplings and Hot and Sour Soup. I don't remember what other specials they are advertising this year. Usually they have quite a few for these celebrations whether it's New Year of Moon Festival. Talking to some friends at the alley, they don't go there because, being a buffet, they cannot guarantee how hot the food will be and one of the couple won't touch anything unless its piping hot. I have never found anything to be cooler than it should be, but.....
As I keep telling people, it's Chinese New Year and I love dumplings (also known as pot stickers) so had to share this recipe with you. I found it in Zoomer Living a CARP magazine.
Have a great day

PORK AND CABBAGE POT STICKERS
These little dumplings are made using wonton wrappers. You can boil them or pan fry (as we’ve done). The wrappers can be found in Asian markets or major grocery store chains, often located near the tofu or produce aisle. There are several ways to fold your dumplings–the easiest way is to simply fold in half. We’ve used a pinch pleat method for this batch.
Ingredients
1/2 lb ground pork
1/2 head Chinese cabbage
2 green onions
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 package of wonton wrappers
1 egg
Salt and pepper
Vegetable oil
1/2 head Chinese cabbage
2 green onions
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 package of wonton wrappers
1 egg
Salt and pepper
Vegetable oil
- Chop cabbage into small pieces. Finely chop green onions and grate ginger.
- In a large bowl combine ground pork, cabbage, onions, ginger, sesame oil, soya sauce and salt and pepper.
- Lay 6 wonton wrappers out flat and fill each with a teaspoon of filling.
- Whisk egg in a small bowl and use to seal brush around the egg of each wonton (do not over-fill or the wonton will not fold properly). Fold over and press down firmly ensuring each is sealed completed.
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet (to test, dip the edge of a wonton into oil–if it begins to bubble the oil is ready).
- Cook 5-6 wontons at a time. Cook on one side for about 2 minutes, then flip and cook on other side until lightly golden brown.
- Remove and place on a paper towel lined plate.
Have a great day
Hi Jo - have a good birthday lunch for Matt today - and congratulations on 81 years. Those little critters are becoming a grand nuisance I can 'hear', 'see' and 'feel' through your posts ... take care and enjoy the weekend ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks Hilary. Will definitely enjoy my lunch. They surely are Hilary, driving me to drink.
DeleteHope they finally get those bed bugs.
ReplyDeleteBelated happy birthday to Matt!
Me too Alex. I am past fed up with them now.
DeleteThanks, will pass it on.
I love pot stickers but I can't find them on the menus out here. Unless that's what 'Peking ravioli' is. I'm sorry you guys are dealing with those nasty bed bugs. *shudder* I hope they can eradicate them once and for all. Happy birthday to Matt! Enjoy your lunch!
ReplyDeleteThat's odd JoJo. There are, of course, all kinds of pot stickers. I just ate a whole bunch of them including one I had never seen, can't remember what they called it, it was wonton stuffed and folded to look like a hobo's luggage and called a parcel. It was very crispy.
DeleteI am so fed up with these bugs, you have no idea. Thanks.
Steam, good to know, but how do you go about steaming everything?
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Matt!
Now I'm hungry. :)
Not sure Yolanda. Funnily enough, yesterday Amazon offered me a hand held steamer which they suggested for bed bugs. Coincidence. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I am no full of pot stickers or dumplings.
DeleteHappy Birthday to Matt ... hope you have/had a wonderful lunch. I must admit I'd avoided eating in a Chinese restaurant in Fuerteventura despite being told how wonderful the buffet was, because I can't abide lukewarm food either. But, on our first visit last month (after 12 years of avoiding the place) I realised there was a microwave on the side which the staff used to warm the plates of people ordering from the menu. So ... I just loaded my plate from the buffet and popped it into the microwave for a minute -- perfick!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sue. We did have a wonderful lunch and I am stuffed to bursting with dumplings and other things. Good idea. Never seen a microwave, never needed one either I guess.
DeleteHappy Birthday to Matt! I hope your bed-bug problem gets solved soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Misha and so very much do I.
DeleteI cannot believe the problems that you are having with your neighbor's bugs! good grief!!! I sure hope that it gets resolved real soon.
ReplyDeleteI love pot stickers! Maybe I will be ambitious and try making them.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MATT!!!!!!!!!!
Tell me Maggie. They have been in to his apartment several times now, to my knowledge. It must have been really, really bad.
DeleteMatt used to make them, never tried. Thanks for the Birthday wishes.
Oh, how I love Chinese food! Now, I cannot enjoy them with the MSG, the hydrogenated yeast extract, sodium...How I miss it all.
ReplyDeleteHow sad Susan that you can't eat it. Can you not make it at home without those things?
DeleteI hope Matt had a lovely birthday. He's exactly the same age as my Dad except for about 20 days. I don't like buffets for exactly the same reason. Too many people breathing all over the food as well. I'm paranoid about my food like that. I can't stand watching people make my food either even when they have gloves on.
ReplyDeleteI think he enjoyed it in a quiet way Pinky. They have shields over the food so people are not breathing over it. You are paranoid aren't you? Remind me not to ask you to dinner LOL
DeleteI hope they get rid of the bugs on their next visit. Not nice that you have to wait so long though. I hope you both enjoyed your lunch.
ReplyDeleteMe too Helen. Actually, don't tell anyone, but I don't think I was bitten last night (sometimes can't always tell straight away). We did enjoy lunch thanks.
DeleteMatt shares my oldest grandson's birthday (who hit double digits this year). Sounds like he had a good time, retaining his dwarf tossing title again. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAs you know, down here in NC we say, "Sleep tight; don't let the bed bugs bite." That's my heartfelt wish for you.
Seems to share quite with quite a few people. Thursday I discovered a young relative who's mom I know through FB, also had a birthday. He certainly bowled well on Thursday Jeff.
DeleteActually that phrase is a very old one, we have said the same in the UK for years. I wonder just how long it goes back, have to see if I can find out. I have thought a lot about the olden days when bed bugs were a part of every day life, or every night life I guess. Trouble is, they aren't any more so we are not used to having to handle them. Thanks for the wish too though. Mostly you don't know they are biting at night, not till you get up in the morning (or in the middle of the night I guess).
