Yes, I know, said I wouldn't be back but I picked up a tip from Great British Baking Show. Apparently Mary Berry has always prepared her Brussels Sprouts the same was as I too have been doing for many years. Apparently her husband said to her, one day, why? Why not cut them in half?
OK, many of you won't be preparing them anyway, and many of you will be trying out the many recipes which appear on line for different ways of doing them, but for those of you who cook them in the traditional manner, I thought this was a useful tip.
Have a great day

Wow. I've always cut them in half unless they were really small. Never considered cooking them whole.
ReplyDeleteFunny I have never cooked them any other way Denise, but always putting a cross in the bottom to speed the cooking.
DeleteI am a HUGE HUGE Mary Berry fan and Paul Hollywood. Excellent show, been watching it for years. Although, the real name is The Great British Bake Off. They changed it for PBS or some bullshit. But to those of us who have been watching the show for years, it's simply BAKE OFF!
ReplyDeleteBest show ever!!!!!!!!!
I have a pie recipe from Paul for my next post for the Really Real Housewives. Delicious and easy. I'm not a big fan of watching desserts which is a lot of what they make on that show.
DeleteStay tuned for bread week. It's the best. I have Hollywoods books. Sent to me from the UK, in fact. Great stuff. Long time fan. Why BBC didn't pay up to keep the show, I'll never understand. But on the bright side, more folks are finding the show now. Too bad about Mel and Sue not staying with the show. They're some funny gals.
DeleteI do enjoy watching the pair of them Ivy.
DeleteI'm glad you started watching. I'd mentioned this show to you quite awhile ago as well as Mary Berry but you hadn't heard of her. She's brilliant and if you ever get to see the documentary about her, I hope you give it a watch.
DeleteI think I remember you mentioning the show now Ivy.
DeletePS: This past week I fermented Brussels sprouts.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good Ivy.
DeleteI keep tasting them as they ferment. So far, very nice. And they were onsale and local. Win, win.
DeleteAs you say, win win.
DeleteI only ever made them once (in a pretty good recipe) but I used them whole. Never occurred to me to cut them.
ReplyDeleteOnly once JoJo? It is a staple vegetable in this household.
DeleteHi Jo - I just love plain Brussels ... seems a bit of extra work to do anything else with them ... and it's only in recent years I put the cross in the bottom, but never when I'm cooking for just me! I do love them ...
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
Well the cross is supposed to enable them to cook more easily Hilary. But I love the idea of cutting them in half.
DeleteHappy holidays!
ReplyDeletethanks Vanessa the same to you.
DeleteI love Brussels but it was only recently I found out how wonderful they are roasted. Simply sprinkle some olive oil, salt, pepper and some nutmeg powder onto them and bake for around 30 mins in the oven, turning part way through. They should be slightly blackened/crisp on the outside and soft/butter inside ... wonderful! Belated Merry Xmas Jo and wishing you and Matt a fab 2017
ReplyDeleteI've never tried them any other way Sue. They do sound good your way. Maybe I will have a go.
DeleteFab 2017 to you as well. Wasn't too keen on 2016. Bit buggy for me.
