CPAP, Cardiologist, Falls,

Remind me not to say anything about bowling for a while. At the moment our game is getting worse and worse although my last game on Thursday was respectable. I don't know why we are so bad at the moment. I have been very tired recently and thought it might be because I haven't been using my CPAP machine. They called me to come in for a service with my machine so I went Thursday morning and am planning to try it out again and see what happens. My problem was, since I lost weight, I couldn't seem to get a decent seal with the face mask so that the leaks were keeping me awake. However, if I get it tight enough I may be able to do it. Trouble is, my face will be covered with deep lines in the morning. Can't win can I, neither at bowling nor using the CPAP? If I can't get it to work right, it is the most expensive alarm clock I have ever had.

Friday, today, Matt has to start his annual visit to the heart specialist. Some years ago he had a string of TIAs, mini strokes, and was sent to the cardiologist whom he continues to see every year. The first part of the test is for a portable blood pressure monitor that he has to wear all night and which apparently keeps him awake. I know I had to wear one once and it was dreadful. Then he has to get up before the crack of dawn to take the stupid thing back again. Yuk, the cardiologist is in the next town so it`s not close by or anything. One thing, however, it isn`t that far from Barrie`s Asparagus Farm so we can call in on the way home. After all, I`m nearly out of asparagus!!

In the afternoon I will be attending yet another session of Stand Up to Falls. A lot of interesting stuff coming out of these seminars. As it appears at least a couple of friends of mine have been falling lately, they too need to attend a similar seminar. The statistics about seniors falling are quite horrific - I sure don`t want to become such a statistic. In Ontario, every 30 minutes a senior goes to the hospital from a fall. Every 10 minutes they go to a doctor for a fall related injury. They are the leading cause of injury in people 65 years or older. Many result in hip fractures. There are causes one doesn`t think about. Things like low blood pressure which can make one dizzy, Incontinence causing someone to rush to the bathroom, and so on and so on. Exercise is highly recommended. Not strenuous exercise you understand, but the kind of aerobic and balance exercises which benefit aged people so much.

This is a favourite recipe which I have had for years. Very simple, very tasty. I must admit I have never tried making these I am somewhat scared of handling Phyllo. Matt has always made them. However, I have decided I need to try it.

Asparagus Phyllo Bundles

For one roll:
Phyllo - 1/2 sheet for 2 asparagus
2 stalks asparagus
Parmesan, grated

1. Brush phyllo with butter, sprinkle with Parmesan, place 2 asparagus in middle and roll. Place in baking dish, sprinkle more Parmesan and put in oven 375 F for 15 mins.

Yield: one roll:

  1. Hi Jo - good luck with all things medical - it's good to know both of you are being monitored so closely and taking care of things. Those phyllo bundles sound delicious ... it's 'easy' to handle - don't be frightened - she says from afar! Cheers Hilary

  2. Jo, I hope you feel better soon. On the bright side, I think it's great that we have all these modern medical devices to help us out. I hope that you will continue to find your sessions about Standing Up to Falls helpful.

Thanks for sharing another recipe. Now I know something else I can do with asparagus instead of just boiling it.

    1. It is wonderful what we have available these days Cynthia. I am sure they will be helpful.

Lots of stuff you can do with asparagus, been posting recipes for a while now.

  3. Pity about the bowling. Fingers crossed it starts to improve - and that Matt's test shows only good things.

    1. I hope so Helen, makes it less enjoyable when you bowl so badly.

This is basically only a yearly check up.

  4. I hope you get all your medical stuff sorted out! I don't know how anyone can sleep w/ a CPAP on their face. There's just no way. That thing would get ripped off and thrown across the room, esp. the way I toss and turn.

    1. Actually they are quite comfortable JoJo so long as you can get a good seal with the mask. They are designed to cope with tossing and turning.

  5. Hope you are both well. I'd never heard of a CPAP and had to look it up! The recipe sounds delish!

  6. The bowling scores may not be the best that you like but wouldn't it be worse if you didn't go at all? I kept reading the machine as CRAP not CPAP-Hahahaaa maybe it should be called CRAP:) That is frightening the # of falls older people have. I know it isn't good when I hear that they have fallen because it usually does mean a fracture and their mobility could be taken away.

    1. You are right Birgit, it would be worse. I do the same, it is very easy to misread those letters. It is frightening, I had no idea it was so many.

  7. Since losing the weight, has your breathing gotten better? Will there ever be a time when you don't need the mask?

Falling is serious business. Glad you found a class to help you. And that meal, looks good. Hope we get to see pictures when you're done.

    Happy Weekend :-)

    1. I don't really know about my breathing. I thought there was nothing wrong in the first place but was told I had sleep apopnea which isn't as bad as apnea. I haven't actually used the mask in a couple of years but think that might have been a mistake.

It is, very serious business. Gotta get up my courage yet Ivy.

    2. Back when I had a pinched nerve at the base of my brain, I would walk into walls and had to be careful not to fall. We got it fixed right away, but it wasn't fun. Scary, too.

Can they refit you for a new mask?

    3. That doesn't sound nice at all Ivy. Glad you got it fixed OK.

I didn't need a new mask Ivy. Used mine last night and everything worked fine. Hope it continues to be so.

  8. I'm very impressed with the way you and Matt look after your health. It sounds like a pain with that blood pressure monitoring machine. Hope it all works out okay. I was wondering if your breathing has improved since losing weight too.

  9. He reckons he didn't sleep much last night, but then nor did I for different reasons. Don't honestly know if there has been any difference Pinky.
