Motto, Desktop, Medical,

From a child, as a Duttson, I have been aware that our family motto is Dum Spiro Spero meaning while I breathe, I hope, or loosely with breath, life. I have just watched a documentary about the Royal Treasures of England which included a volume of Shakespeare which was read by Charles I when he was in prison, a month before he was beheaded, and on the fly leaf there is, in his writing, the motto dum spiro spero written and signed by him and it was recognised as his motto. So where the devil did my family get it from I wonder? Now  just Googled and the motto goes back to Roman times apparently and is also the motto of the State of South Carolina. It also is, apparently, the motto of many families so I guess anyone can appropriate a motto wherever it comes from. One of my cousins commented that the motto meant - with breath, life - or trust the bloody Duttson's to hold on. Think I will have to do some research, we have a family crest too, I wonder where that came from? There are only a few Duttson's left these days.

With regard to my computer problems, I managed to send an email to my computer guy. Never expected a response whilst he was away, but he says he will be back on Wednesday and can come on Thursday or Friday. Hurrah.

Managed to get hold of the urologist too, they are now sending me to the hospital's Infectious Diseases dept. plus sending me for an ultra sound. Lovely. I hope this won't be too far in the future. I am somewhat tired of this waterworks problem. I also phoned to make an appointment with the vascular surgeon in 6 month's time, apparently they already have me down on some kind of schedule and will phone me, probably in March, they said.

We didn't go bowling this aft. On the radio they were yapping about freezing rain and Matt refused to go out, we got some kind of precipitation but it sure wasn't freezing rain. We could have gone, but.... So we will probably go some afternoon this week. Tomorrow we have our foot nurse and Wednesday we have lunch at the Mandarin with a friend, first visit since I was taken ill in October. Looking forward to it. Today, I forgot to mention, my physiotherapist came for her last visit. I am feeling positively abandoned now having had all these people visiting me - especially when they all seemed to come at once.

Nope, no recipe, sorry, too difficult. You will have to wait til my desktop is fixed.

Have a great day

  1. I hope all goes well Jo - and you get the desktop fixed ... I always enjoy your recipes. The blogging connectivity always help when one is feeling down. I sincerely hope you can find the best way forward - and yes won't it be lovely once Spring comes along and the bad weather leaves off for the year. We don't have a motto ... but fun to know someone who does ... enjoy - and I hope you can find out more about the motto related to your family. Cheers Hilary

  3. I was looking at Doppler radar yesterday and thought about you. The edge of the storm just missed my area, but I could see the ice and snow storm over your area in Canada. We only got a light sprinkling of rain.

    1. Don't think we got much Denise. Looked a bit icy on the roads when I went to bed.

  4. I'm like Matt. I hear freezing rain and I won't go out. I got caught out in it once and it scared the bejeezus out of me.

I would love to look up old family lore too. There are stories that were passed down, but I don't know exactly how accurate they are after generations of sharing.

    1. I'm the opposite, I'll believe it when I see it Liz. Keep your fingers crossed we don't get snow tomorrow.

It is interesting isn't it? I need to do some research, no idea where our motto came from but seems it could have been borrowed.

  5. I love looking up family history. I just wish I had the time to do it properly. Hope your computer guy can fix the problem, and glad you're back to posting anyway! Infectious diseases? I wonder why that?

    1. Yes it's interesting Lisa. We have all kinds of family trees floating around, I have a copy but an Australian relative is in charge these days.

I hope he can fix it quickly too, I am fed up with cursor chasing. As for infectious diseases, no idea.

  6. Have you ever done your DNA through a geneology site like Ancestry? I just checked my pics from our brief stop in SC on the way north but the motto isn't on their signs.

    1. No, JoJo, but it's fairly different for us as in the early days of our family there weren't lots of immigrants. I know we are descended from Vikings. They were immigrants of course. Maybe they don't know!!

  8. I am trying to catch up so i am reading your posts backwards:) If you have a urinary tract infection, why doesn't the Dr give you antibiotics? I have had them and it is horrible. Yogurt helps-no sugar kind and has to have the bacterial culture. Cranberry juice also helps so you should start drinking some of that.

    1. I've had 3 lots of antibiotics Birgit. I guess they think something else is the matter. Cranberry juice is a prevention, didn't know it was a cure.
