Senior's License, Shopping, Cannabis,

Well I passed my test - just. She had a machine for testing eyes and I could not even see the numbers let alone read them. She said she would send me to an optometrist. Bit later I was discussing with the Scots guy next to me (name of Joseph, how's that for coincidence?) and I was saying I had never had eye trouble, blah, blah, blah. The woman testing us (Gail) must have heard me and got out a different machine, set it up and called me over to try it. I could read it perfectly. Phew. The main road getting there was being torn up (doesn't seem like 5 minutes since they did it before) so, being rush hour, I thought I was going to be late. I had the radio on and the DJ was saying today is the first day of school. Don't rush, better to be late and safe. I took his advice and relaxed. I was a few minutes late but nothing of significance.  I thought it would be a total waste of time but actually I learned a couple of things which were against the law which I either didn't know or had forgotten plus one good tip. That being - if you are waiting at a crossroads to turn left, keep your wheels straight. If you have them turned to the left and anyone hits you in the rear, you could be shoved in front of the oncoming traffic. Very sensible advice and not something I would have thought of.

I then went to the store to get my groceries and back home for lunch. Intended to go bowling but a) I ran out of cannabis today and b) my legs were aching. They have dispatched it already so it should arrive tomorrow aft. Which means we can't bowl tomorrow either. Maybe Thursday. Fingers crossed. The bottle I had was solid white and I couldn't see inside it. The next bottle will, I believe be a see through so I can tell in good time when I am getting down.

In the afternoon, I went to the Service Ontario office to get my driver's license and there was a lineup a mile long - there is no way I can stand in such a line up. I then called up the main office to see if it was possible to renew on line but no, I have to go to a local office. Apparently the offices get very busy at the beginning and end of the month and after a holiday so I guess I was out of luck today. Whilst I was waiting on the phone, I was listening to Swan Lake, delightful, much nicer than some of the crappy music they play. Well, crappy to me anyway. They give you an envelope at the Senior's test place which you are not allowed to open or to fold or bend. I had nearly doubled it over to put in my purse, duuh. Still, I have til the 14th to renew it so I should be OK.

Although this is probably not something I would prepare, I know many people would have a go at it. Although it does sound good.

Grilled Mushroom Quesadillas

1 lb mushrooms
1 large jalapeno, sliced into rings (optional)
2 Tbs balsamic vinegar
1 Tbs olive oil + more for greasing
3 garlic cloves, minced
Salt and pepper
1 1/2 – 2 cups shredded sharp cheese (Cheddar, Monterrey Jack, etc.)
4 (8 – 10 inch) flour tortillas

1. Prepare propane grill by heating three burners over medium-high heat.

2. While BBQ is heating, slice mushrooms. Combine jalapenos, vinegar, oil, garlic, salt, and

3. pepper into a large mixing bowl.

4. Add mushrooms and toss until well combined! You can also prepare this mix a day in advance.

5. Adjust burners to medium heat (looking for 400F-425F.) Lightly oil grill.

6. Pour mushrooms onto grill, taking care not to lose anything between the bars (looking at you, jalapenos!)

7. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, trying to maintain 400F-425F temperature. Flip mushrooms and cook for another 5-10 minutes, or until browned to your liking (I like seeing how far I can go without burning them!)

8. Move to a bowl.

9. Lower heat to medium-low (350F)

10. Brush one side of each tortilla with some oil.

11. Place two, oil-side-down, onto grill. Quickly top each evenly with mushroom mixture and cheese. Top with remaining tortillas, oil-side-up.

12. Cover and cook for about 3 minutes. Flip and cook for a few more minutes (keep an eye on them or you may end up with some char like I did!)

13. Remove from heat, slice, and serve with your favourite toppings!

  1. Hi Jo - glad the eyes were ok ... and that you learnt something on the radio. Standing in lines is pretty awful isn't it - hope you can find a day when the line is not so long ... the Quesadillas do sound good - cheers Hilary

    1. So was I Hilary, what a relief. It is awful particularly these days, I end up with a lot of leg pain. However, phoned them this morning and they say if I tell them I have problems, they will bring me up front.

  2. Just go back in a few days. Here, our DMV is surprisingly empty mid-afternoons.

    1. Yeah I will Alex. The DMV in Morehead always seemed crowded to me.

  3. So silly that woman at the eye place. Glad she was listening to you! Glad the cannabis is working for you. Wish they'd legalize it here in Ohio... I too, have heard that going in the middle of the day in the middle of the week is a good time to go get your license. Here in Ohio it's called the BMV, not DMV. Bureau of, not Department of...

    1. Not the eye place Lisa but the place where they hold meetings for over 80 drivers. An eye test is one thing they give you, you also get cognitive tests. They say I can inform them and get taken ahead of the others.

  4. Glad you passed. Even if it’s just it’s still a win.
Glad the next bottle you’ll be able to see it better.
I love mushrooms!!! In my quesadillas, as well.

    1. Got the next bottle and it is just as opaque as the first one Ivy. However, now I am taking it one syringe at a time I should be able to figure it.

  5. If you have an auto association you belong to, like our Triple-A, they might offer the convenience of renewing it for you. I hear that a lot of people are going there because MA now requires a great deal of proof of name and citizenship and it's been so hard at the DMV and so crowded.

  7. I despise going to the DMV. I'm glad I won't have to do it again for 12 years.

    1. Thanks Birgit, it did. Now all I have to do is actually get the license from a Service Office.
