Honey Bee, Weed Killer,

Today, August 18, is National Honey Bee Day

Honey Bees are such an endangered species and as it says on the side of this blog, if they go, they are taking us with them. If we didn't have bees to pollinate we would be in a terrific mess for food.

I am a little worried about my Quaker Oats at the moment, it turns out that they contain weed killer!! Yes, really, the oats contain unsafe levels of glycosphate. Here is a video I have just watched.

I frequently have instant oats for breakfast. I tend to feel that as I have been eating these for years, why worry about it now, but then maybe that is foolish. At the end of this video there is a statement from Quaker saying the any glycosphate which may remain is well below the standards set by the FDA.

Have a great weekend

  1. There have been way too many food recalls lately. I eat Rice Krispies...I hope those are OK!

  2. We had honey bees swarming in our garden earlier this Summer. We contacted the British Bee Keeping Association and within an hour we had a couple of guys round to capture the Queen and her drones. It two attempts but they stayed in a temporary hive in our garden overnight and were taken away to a safe place next morning.

We learned so much about honey bees. We were encouraged to get right up close to the hive to feel the breeze as the drones fanned with their wings both inside and around the entrance to keep the nest at the correct temperature. We saw the 'waggle dance' carried out by the drones to indicate the direction and distance to food sources and the smell of honey and beeswax on the air was fabulous. Was quite sorry to see them go.

The beekeepers were kind enough to give us a jar of local honey in exchange!

    1. Can't you have hives in your garden or isn't that allowed Sue? At least you got a jar of local honey. The asparagus farm has hives these days and they have always sold delicious honey, theirs is now included I understand. Interesting experience, only seen the waggle dance on TV of course.

  3. I love that they write, its still well below standards. Yep, lots of horrible goes on with food. That's nothing new and sadly, not enough good change being made.
