Not been able to "play" with my air fryer much, but I have been trying Prawn Crackers (name we give them in the UK, not sure about in North America) the first time they came out very overcooked, this time they were perfect. I put them in the basket, sprayed them with Pam and gave them about 2 minutes without heating the fryer before hand. These were frequently served at Chinese restaurants in England, I have never seen them here, certainly not at the Mandarin.
Just realised that being Canada Day on Sunday July 1, the Mandarin will be serving chocolate covered bacon for the whole month of July.
To all my Canadian Friends, hope you have a happy Canada Day and are careful if you are in the area where it is going to be so hot. I know we have heat warnings out in our neck of the woods.
Have a great weekend.

I've never heard of prawn crackers. I do love chicken wings in the air fryer.
ReplyDeleteThey are good if you can find them Liz. Never tried chicken wings in the air fryer though.
DeleteWe have prawn crackers here, too. Most Chinese restaurants sell them and it was a popular treat for my kids. These days I go for a vegetarian option which tastes similar and is pretty good, too.
ReplyDeleteNot sure where I bought the ones I have now. Frying them they were so very oily I tried not to eat them. Calories you know!
DeleteWhat's unvegetarian about them?
The ones we get here are 20-30 % crushed up prawns, depending on the brand. The veggie ones are like them largely tapioca but are flavoured with vegetables instead of prawns.
DeleteI had never heard of those before Helen.
DeleteNever heard of them either.
ReplyDeleteHappy Canada Day!
Ask you local Chinese restaurant, or your grocery store Alex.
DeleteThanks.
Hi Jo - prawn crackers are moorish aren't they. Chocolate bacon - no thanks!! Enjoy Canada Day ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThanks Hilary, and yes, they are moreish. Chocolate bacon is great. It is only a crispy rasher dipped in chocolate.
DeleteWhen I was a kid, the prawn crackers were the highlight of a Chinese meal.
ReplyDeleteMe too Pinky, I used to love them. Amazon have them but I don't see them in the stores round here.
DeleteI think all Chinese restaurants in the UK serve Prawn Crackers (often free of charge whilst you wait for the main meal or takeaway to be prepared. I usually avoid them as they are so high in calories so I'd rather 'save myself' for the meat/veg dishes.
ReplyDeleteAre you pleased with your air fyer Jo? I've been reading about them recently. There are several on the market here for around £50 which are supposed to be pretty good. Just wondering if I'd get much use out of one or if it would be another 'gadget' in the cupboard like the yoghurt maker, bread machine etc.
Suex
Well of course, done in the air fryer, prawn crackers are not nearly so calorie laden Sue. I loved them in restaurants but avoided them too.
DeleteYes, I like my air fryer, apart from anything else it is allowing me to eat things I would normally avoid, like French Fries (chips) which would be grease laden too, but I buy frozen and the fryer just cooks them perfectly without oil.
