Fur Trade, Rain.

I have just read an article by National Geographic which tells me that the trade in animal furs and skins is on the rise. I am horrified that this is so.

This is a mink from a fur farm in Poland. It will live in this cage until they kill it and turn it into part of a fur coat or something similar. There are many horrific pictures in this article so you may find you are unable to look. I was under the impression that there had been so much protest about animal furs and skins that the trade was almost nonexistent. Silly me. I suppose I can sound a bit hypocritical because I am a meat eater, but I think the fur/skin trade is very wrong.

Hey, it would have been my mom's birthday today. She would have been 104. Not important really.

I am pleased to say we got quite a lot of rain over the weekend. Whether it was enough, I don't know. I suspect not. What we really need is a day of solid continuous rain and that is just not happening.

I thought these sounded really good.

BAKED PARMESAN MUSHROOMS

Source: Damned Delicious

4 Servings

The easiest, most flavorful mushrooms you will ever make, baked with parmesan, thyme and lemon goodness!

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 pounds cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Zest of 1 lemon

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 teaspoons dried thyme

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly oil a baking sheet or coat with nonstick spray.

Place mushrooms in a single layer onto the prepared baking sheet. Add olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, thyme and Parmesan; season with salt and pepper, to taste. Gently toss to combine.

Place into oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until browned and tender, tossing occasionally.

Serve immediately.
Have a great day

  2. I assumed that the fur trade was long gone, too, but when I think about it I've see people in Russia and Alaska wearing fur hoods and jackets and they must come from somewhere.

    1. I guess I knew better thinking about it Helen. There are still stores selling mink coats etc.

  3. Unfortunately, the fur trade is strong because of Russia and other European countries that wear any fur caps and coats still plus you have the fashion industry which still support this which is sad. Happy birthday to your mom. It is important and I always think of my dad who would have been 103. Funny, my mom's roomie is 104 this month as well but I feel bad for her even if she doesn't feel it now. I bet if she was of sound mind she would have wanted to pass a few years ago. She is just in bed 24/7 and makes noises but that is it for her existence.

    1. Not just because of Russia Birgit. There are furriers in both Canada and the US. If people didn't buy firs, it would kill the trade. How very sad for your mom's roomie. I always hope that I will die before I get like that. My mother actually died in '87.

  4. I don't know why anyone would want a fur coat. We're past the Stone Age, aren't we?
    Mushrooms sound good.

    1. Obviously not Alex. Fur is a delightful thing to wear in the cold, but these days we can make synthetic furs so no need to kill.

I'm thinking to make them tonight.

  5. I agree with you about the fur trade. I don't understand someone wanting to wear it at all. We've had some rain too but not quite enough.

    1. I understand it Susan, but these days synthetic fur is readily available. Pity we can't share the rain which has fallen elsewhere.

  6. Mmmm, that mushroom dish looks so simple but so good. I can't believe I've never thought of making them like that.

And I don't understand fur, either. I just think it looks tacky. Besides, eating meat is a dietary necessity for most, but wearing dead animals just makes you look like a caveman.

    1. I'm planning on it tonight Bryan.

My mother had a mink jacket which I inherited and I confess I loved wearing it especially when it was really cold. However, that was in the 80's and if I wanted fur today, it would be synthetic.

  7. I've never been a mushroom fan but I am totally making that recipe! It sounds sooooo good! The fur trade disgusts me too. Like you, I thought people frowned upon that now.

      Yes, I thought so too.

  8. Fake fur should be the only fur. Eating meat isn't the same thing. Furs are for vanity whereas meat is for sustenance. I'm sad now thinking about all those poor little woodland creatures kept in a cage until they're murdered.

  9. I love mushrooms and 'sneak' them into meals most days if I can but usually just button mushromms heated whole in a pan with a small spray of oil, some lime juice and chilli flakes ... and sometimes some cherry tomatoes added towards the end of cooking so they just heat through without breaking skins - my favourite side dish.

Now I need to try your recipe as hadn't thought of baking sliced mushrooms in the over - and with cheese (what could be nicer) LOL. Suex

    1. I mostly get crimini all the time as they have more taste. I have fond memories of field mushrooms which we used to pick when I lived in Kent. Sounds like a nice side dish Sue. This dish was good.

  10. Fur farms are so cruel. And such a waste as all they use is the fur. They're almost as bad as factory farming.

  11. Glad you got rain. Wow, 104. Lucy would have been 105 this past month. Time goes too fast!

    1. It does Ivy, it does. We have a 94 yr old in our exercise class. She makes me envious, she doesn't have a single ache or pain - she says anyway and looking at her, I believe her. At bowling we have a 92 yr old and a close to 90 yr old. Don't know all the ages of others of course.
