Barbecues, Construction, Lunch

I do hope all my friends in the US had a splendid holiday weekend and that all your barbecues went well. Long time since we have been to a barbecue. We can't have one ourselves in an apartment building, too dangerous. Some people do have electric barbecues but I am not sure they are strictly legal in an apartment building either. Not as dangerous as propane though.

Today they removed all the scaffolding from the first tier of apartments. It would seem all the balcony floors are now good to go. However, they have to put walls on them yet. Not sure how this is going to be done. I will be watching. I think they have nearly finished the end tier too. I am told they will then erect scaffolding etc. on the middle tier and also out front where they have actually started dismantling balcony walls.

We are pretty glad they are not doing our balcony yet. We have a large percentage of our belongings packed in either plastic storage boxes or plastic garbage bags, sitting on our balcony. I cannot imagine what we would have done without a balcony. Let's hope this is definitely cleared up this time and doesn't continue to hang around til they get to us. Today we are joining a friend for lunch at the Mandarin and then going on to rent the shop vac to remove the Diatomaceous Earth which my Hepa Filter vacuum cannot cope with. We are planning to rent it for 4 hours or less, that's $25. Any longer and we will start running up bills.

I caught up on Kung Fu Panda this weekend too. I had seen the first one so rented the second one from iTunes. Enjoyed it so rented the third one which I nearly switched off. There was one section which was, to me, extremely childish, even for children's viewing. However, I stuck with it and ended up enjoying that movie as well. I enjoy that kind of thing now and again. I think I need to catch up on some of the Ice Age movies too. Only one criticism, they kept talking about learning chi. If you study the martial arts, and become any good at it, learning chi should come along with the lessons. But, it's a cartoon, so ....

I would really like to try eating these before I try making them. I am not sure whether I would dare make them. They sound delicious and I do enjoy Kimchee which is pretty spicy stuff. If I do have a go, I will cut it down to the smallest amount I can just in case. I am pretty sure Matt wouldn't like these.

    1. You are lucky you can have them WW. Wish we could. Always difficult to figure out where to move things to.

  2. I have a neighbor who has his gas grill on his front porch. His house is made of wood. Go figure. Very noisy 4th here.

    1. Sounds really safe Denise. Sorry you had a noisy 4th. I guess it is something which will always happen.

  3. You can always get one of those little indoor electric grills. We had one for a long time.
The third movie wasn't as good as the others but still fun.

    1. We do have one Alex, but it's not nearly the same somehow.

The movie improved once they got down to business as it were.

  4. I think sometimes when they make a lot of movies from the original they can get a little redundant or stale. I haven't seen the 3rd one yet, but we will probably soon.

We did have a nice 4th, did our gathering on the 3rd with barbecue chicken and hamburgers. First time to try out new grill which worked great.

    1. I agree Betty, they can overdo stuff or run out of ideas I suppose. I did enjoy it in the end although I was tempted to turn it off early on.

Glad you enjoyed your get together.

  5. Good luck with the vac rental today. You're now on month 7 of this bug thing....they had better resolve it once and for all. No one should have to live like that. We were going to grill yesterday but my husband had to go to work at 5 so we put it off. Pouring rain today. Not sure what time he'll be home.

    1. Thanks JoJo, shouldn't be a problem, it's only because my vac won't cope with the DE. I hope so too, but it is a big problem these days.

Sorry you didn't get to grill - we need rain, doesn't seem to be in the forecast though. Showers tomorrow I believe.

  6. The holiday was nice, but the bigger family gathering is this coming weekend. I might spring this recipe on them. Sounds good to me.

Have a great week, Jo :)

  7. HI, Jo,

Nice weekend weather wise here in Chicago. Today we scaled into the 90's, but the weekend was lovely.

WOW... that is a major project on your building. I hate construction... the noise and mess. Still under some here in my loft, but almost finished. FINALLY. UGH what a long project, almost a year... Only have baseboards, a bit of painting, and hanging the doors on the closets and bath.

Candied Jalepenos... eek... not for me. But for those who like it HOT, I'm sure it will please them.

    1. Thought you were in Florida by now Michael. Just as well you aren't even hotter down there plus all that nasty algae off the coast.

You are so right about the construction. This whole town has gone construction mad. All the damned roads are pulled up because of the LRT they are installing and now they have started pulling up our road so that will be a mess for a while.

Love hot, but not sure about this hot.

  8. I really can't see the difference between meat and sausages cooked on a gas bbq or when it's cooked on a gas stove in a fry pan. Why would it taste any different. A charcoal bbq is a different thing. We have a gas barbie and I think the best thing is that my husband does all the cooking.

    1. I do see a difference in taste Pinky, but it's not just that, it's the whole idea of cooking out in the open air etc. etc. Used to have great fun especially when we lived in the States.

  9. It's a shame responsible people can't have barbecues but totally understandable since the idiots made it impossible for everyone else. I hope you can bring all your stuff in before they start on your balcony.

    1. I don't think they will get to us before next year Birgit and I certainly hope all our bug problems will be over by then.

  10. Hope it's the last time you need the D-earth. Wish I could lend you my shop vac. That seems an expensive rental.

    1. Me too Susan but I have some left in case. Actually the rental turned out to be a lot cheaper. We only had it for about 1 1/2 hrs so they charged us $19.95. I found another rental place quite close where I could actually book the machine and have it all day for $30. So went there and they discounted it for me.
