Aging, Rape a Minor Crime??

I have a considerable interest in aging well, I am, after all, 78 next week. This was an interesting article which I thought I would share with you. Some of you too are getting 'up there' I know.
Yesterday I told you about champagne to prevent brain fog etc. today this is a recommendation to eat lots of good fibre. Several people said they would be unable to handle three glasses of champagne. I am sure you don't have to drink them all at once but spread it out over the day if that is the only way you could deal with it. For me, bring it on. LOL. My family has always been one for celebrating birthdays and Christmas with champagne although Matt rarely ever drinks it except when it's been made into a champagne cocktail with brandy.

I saw something on Facebook with which I agreed. Somebody expressed a wish that all the people protesting about the athlete who doesn't stand for the American national anthem would express the same outrage against the young man, Brock Allen Turner, also an athlete, who recently got a virtual slap on the hand for raping an unconscious woman. It is a crime not to stand for the anthem, but so long as you are an up and coming athlete you can rape away to your heart's content. Mind you in view of his father's comment one can understand where he got his lack of respect for women. Get  your priorities right America.

I have never made fried chicken although I have eaten KFC a number of times in my life. However, being deep fried it is something I have avoided. However, I couldn't resist this recipe from the Hairy Bikers, a pair of English cooks. I think it looks absolutely delicious and would like to eat some right now. I was Googling for Sichimi and discovered my local store has their own brand. Never heard of it before.

Hairy Bikers' Chicken Karaage

Cheap as chips
Karaage are Japanese-style chicken nuggets and are really simple to make. The light, flavoursome
batter will make nice change from your usual chicken dish and you can serve them with mayonnaise or Japanese yellow mustard for dipping. They're easy to make but require a little marinating before cooking.

500 g boneless, skinless chicken thighs
2 large garlic cloves, grated or crushed
20 g fresh root ginger, peeled and grated
1tbsp miso paste
2tbsp soy sauce
2tbsp sake
½tsp shichimi (Japanese 7-spice seasoning)
1tsp sugar
175 g rice flour
Vegetable or groundnut oil, for frying
1 lemon, cut into wedges
Mayonnaise and Japanese yellow mustard, for serving
Flaked sea salt

1. Cut the chicken thighs into quarters, making sure that they are all about the same size so they cook evenly.

2. Put the garlic, ginger, miso paste, soy sauce, sake, shichimi and sugar in a large bowl. Season with a good pinch of salt and mix well. Add the chicken pieces and mix well so they are all thoroughly coated with the mixture. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave the chicken to marinate in the fridge for at least an hour but overnight is even better.

3. When you’re ready to cook the chicken, put the rice flour in a shallow bowl and add a good pinch of salt.

4. Pour the oil into a large deep saucepan or a wok until it is about a third full – you need enough oil to deep-fry the chicken. Heat the oil to 180°C. Do not allow the oil to overheat and never leave hot oil unattended.

5. Dip the chicken into the bowl of flour to coat it and place a few pieces in the oil – you’ll probably need to fry the chicken in batches so you don’t overcrowd the pan. Fry for 4–5 minutes until the chicken is golden and crispy, then drain it on kitchen paper. Keep each batch warm in the oven while you cook the rest, then serve at once with lemon wedges, mayonnaise, and Japanese yellow mustard.

Servings: 4

Author Notes
Try using different cuts of chicken instead like breast or wing. You could even swap the chicken for cuts of turkey instead

Have a great day

  1. I have to agree, get our priorities right here in America. At first I was appalled about the young man not standing up for the National Anthem, but then I could see his point. However the other person that committed that despicable crime, I cannot fathom what his dad said about it all. If my son was to do such a thing, I would throw the book at him, no matter how long the jail sentence.

    1. At least he had a point Betty. But Brock Allen Turner needs the book thrown at him.

  2. The article on ageing is interesting. One of the things about being vegetarian is that you do get lots of fibre of all sorts. Even so the gastroenterologist I go to has recommended I add extra fibre to my diet. Don't know if it's helping at all but I'm being obedient - as far as that goes at least.

    1. I am surprised he is recommending more fibre Helen. You must get lots anyway.

  3. I'd rather get older than the only alternative. I never deep-fry anything , never have. Even make my French fries in the oven. But when I worked at the hospital, my Southern friends made delicious fried chicken in a pan with shallow oil. I never could duplicate their flavor even with the recipoe.

    1. True Denise, but it's how you age too. I don't deep fry much, haven't done so in a long time. So much so that I have no discovered I got rid of my Fry Daddy at some point in time and don't even remember it.

  5. Hi-ya. I've seen your smiling face on lots of blogs I visit, but after reading your tips on the Really Real Housewives blog, I thought I'd pop on over to say hello. (Hello!)

You're right about that rapist. I saw in yesterday's paper that he was out of prison. The scumbag only served THREE MONTHS! How unbelievably ridiculous. The judge who sentenced him so leniently, however, is up for recall, and legislators are supposed to be enacting a new law regarding the rape of someone who is unconscious. What kind of world are we living in if such a law is even necessary???

That chicken recipe sounds terrific. I oven-fry my chicken, and if you mix some panko crumbs into the seasoned flour, it comes out nice and crispy.

Three glasses of champagne a day? Yipes. A glass a year is more my speed.

Count me in as your newest groupie. :)

  6. Hi Susan, welcome, nice to see you. Hello to you too.

It really is dreadful reading about this rape case and the attitude of the men involved. Maybe castration of judge, dad and rapist would work????

Sounds a good way of doing the chicken Susan. Panko is such a useful "crisper" isn't it?

If I could afford 3 glasses a day I would like a shot. I really enjoy my champagne although who's to know if I still would drinking that much?

    Thanks

  9. I just don't understand how this person got a slap on the wrist. It just shows how warped everything is just because he comes from an affluent family and is into sports...it's sickening.

  10. We had a similar thing in Australia where an indigenous person refused to stand for the Anthem on Australia Day when he was accepting an award!I suppose he had his reasons. It was very controversial at the time.

    1. But when the controversy takes precedence over a rape crime Pinky, then it is bad.
