Christmas, Wrong Number.

Over the weekend we put up the tree and other decorations. I am not sure how much of this we will do in the future as, to put it bluntly, it hurts. Not, obviously the decorations themselves, but us after doing them. In my case my back is killing me and I have had to take pain killers twice. I love Christmas and will be very disappointed not to decorate but.... I have already cut down on Christmas cards because of the cost of postage, now it seems I am going to have to cut back on decorations, or not do them at all. What a pity, we'll see how I feel next year. It is a fact that the exercises I do twice a week seem to have improved the way I handle some things, maybe another year will improve me even more. I just wish I could get Matt to try the classes.

A snippet in CBC News: a cop kept getting calls and texts from youngsters looking for drugs. Although he told them it was the wrong number,  they kept calling. In the end the cop found out who the dealer was that the kids were trying to reach and it turned out to be someone they were investigating. Talk about a break. The article compares it to a comedy movie from way back "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number".  If only all police work was that easy.

I made this cake a few years ago and had kind of forgotten about it. However, Kraft have posted the recipe for it once again. It was extremely easy, well most of the ingredients are prepared for you, and very enjoyable. I am toying with the idea of making it again.

Snowball Chocolate Cake

1 pkg. (2-layer size) devil's food cake mix
1 pkg. (250 g) Philadelphia Brick Cream Cheese, softened
1 egg
2 Tbs granulated sugar
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Vanilla INSTANT Pudding
1/4 cup icing sugar
1 cup cold milk
2 cups thawed Cool Whip Whipped Topping
1 cup flaked coconut

1. HEAT oven to 350ºF.

2. PREPARE cake batter, in 2-1/2-L ovenproof bowl, as directed on package; scrape side of bowl. Beat cream cheese, egg and granulated sugar until well blended; spoon into centre of batter in bowl.

3. BAKE 1 hour 5 min. or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool in bowl 10 min. Loosen cake from bowl with knife; invert onto wire rack. Remove bowl. Cool cake completely.

4. MEANWHILE, beat dry pudding mix, icing sugar and milk in medium bowl with whisk 2 min. Stir in Cool Whip. Refrigerate until ready to use.

5. PLACE cake on plate; frost with pudding mixture. Cover with coconut. Keep refrigerated.

Servings: 16

Size-WiseAt 16 servings, this fun-to-make cake is a great dessert to serve at a holiday party.
Save on cleanup by mixing and baking the cake batter in the same bowl!
Substitute 3 squares (84 g) Baker's White Chocolate, grated, for the coconut. To grate, first warm the chocolate in microwave on DEFROST 1 min. for each square or until warm. Use a coarse grater for best results.

Have a great day

  1. Hi Jo - Christmas decorations are wonderful ... but can understand the stretching and determination to get everything in its right place. Bet the apartment looks good though. The cake looks fun ... cheers Hilary

    1. I love the decorations Hilary, but.... Yes, the apartment does look good.

The cake is both fun and tasty.

  2. I've lost count of how many trips I've made to the basement to bring up decorations. Worse is that I cannot find a 30" Santa. How could something that big disappear? As for the exercise, it is essential for folks at every age. It truly is a 'use it or lose it' proposition and I do not want to be one of those old folks doing the 'institutional shuffle'.

    1. Luckily our storage is next door to our apartment Denise, but it was still tiring for Matt especially as one box was extremely heavy. Will pack it all better next year. Isn't it odd when things like that happen?

I agree with you about the exercise. I don't understand Matt as he used to be a gymnast and also played all kinds of sports. Now he seems to be thinking if I can't do it all I won't do any of it. Institutional shuffle, good one. Neighbour does just that.

  3. Years ago in WA when I was depressed, I didn't decorate at all and it made me feel kind of sad. That is until Dec. 26th when I realized that I didn't have to do all that work to put everything away. I've had to scale down due to the smaller house but someday I'd like to be able to put everything up again.

    1. I can understand that JoJo. But I would really miss it if I didn't decorate. We have cut back a little bit this year.

  4. That was interesting about the break in the case so to speak with the police. Sad though kids looking for drugs.

I haven't decorated much for Christmas since my mom died 12 days before Christmas back in 2006. I know I'll have to get back to doing so in the next few years with a grandchild around who I'm sure will want to know why his grandparents don't have decorations up.

    1. It is sad, Betty, but I guess it's here to stay.

Yes, I think you will have to start again for your grandchild.

  5. I'm sure he blew their minds when he told them he was a cop.
Maybe there is a service or someone you could hire to come in and decorate next year? I'd think it would be a great job opportunity for someone.

    1. Not sure he told them Alex.

That would be a good idea except it would probably be too expensive. For me anyway.

  6. Ah, proof that sometimes real life is even funnier than fiction. You just can't make that kind of story up. And I'll admit, I'm dreading decorating, just because we have so many and it's an all day job.

I like the idea of the cake, just minus all of that Cool Whip. Don't really care for the stuff.

    1. It is a funny story isn't it BTFS. It is an all day job although we spread it over 2 days.

I am not a Cool Whip fan either, but it works. I suppose you could use real cream but it probably wouldn't hold up very long.

  7. That cake looks so good. But no one eats cake around this house except me so I would end up eating it all. I'm doing the decorations tomorrow. I keep putting it off. Not sure what I'll put up outside.

    1. Yes Susan, dangerous to make a cake in that case. I am thinking dessert for guests which would mean more would get eaten.

  8. The trick is to keep moving because we're like machines aren't we? The parts seize and rust when not in use, lol. I've had a dislocated shoulder 9 times in the last year, exercises suck but I have to do them. My shoulders rehabilitated now so you'll be seeing more of me now. The snowball chocolate cake is perfect for Christmas with all those coconut flakes, it looks like its just snowed! Perfect.

    1. You are so right Spacerguy. I have been trying to ensure my parts don't seize up although not sure it's working very well. Glad your shoulder is doing OK>

It is a good cake for this time of year.

  9. Apart from a tree, a nativity scene and a few glass bowls of Christmas baubles around the place I don't put up decorations. I can't stand bits of tinsel everywhere. You do need to get Matt moving. If you don't use it you lose it! Lovely cake Jo.

    1. I don't have bits of tinsel everywhere Pinky. Some, but not everywhere!! I know, but he is stubborn and will not do what he doesn't want to do. It is a good cake, especially for Christmas.

  10. I'm trying to get up the energy to put up some Christmasy things but with much of the house still in renovation shambles it's been hard to make the effort. I think - because we have a small grandchild coming to visit this weekend - we at least need the small tree up and wreath on the door so it looks like I'd better get organised, doesn't it.

    1. Yes Helen, I can see that would dampen your enthusiasm somewhat. However, for your small grandchild you will really have to make the effort.

  11. Hopefully you will able to put up decorations for years to come Jo. The cake looks wonderful. That is indeed a lucky break.

  12. That is too funny about the cop getting the phone calls. It was meant to be and thank God it did happen. I know what you mean about pain. I am taking 3 times as long to put all the decorations up. I took this week off to try and do all of it. I still have the Christmas village, nativity and tree (real one) plus shopping, wrapping and baking. I think I am nuts

    1. I guess it was meant to be. You obviously do a lot more than we do Birgit when you talk about village, nativity, real tree etc.

  13. Cake looks yummy. I hardly do any decorating now that my kids are gone. And sometimes we travel at Christmas so doesn't seem much point!

    1. It is yummy Lisa. As you say, not much point decorating if you are away anyway.

  14. I hope your back fares better soon. I've yet to put up any decorations, not even cards I've received. Perhaps we should just hire a decorator and de-decorator? :)

  15. May the next year find you with more improvements and better flexibility. Have you considered just for a test of a month or even half a year, dropping sugars, dairy and grains, just to see if any of the three are causing un-needed inflammation and pain?

    1. Nope I haven't considered it Ivy, but I figure if I haven't had problems in all these years, it cannot be that. I am afraid it's mostly arthritis.

    2. I have arthritis too and the removal has really made a difference in the inflammation, pain, strength and movement.
