Carols, Beer, Marijuana,

Why do some singers/choirs make Christmas carols sound like dirges? I am just listening to Oh Come All Ye Faithful on the radio and it sounds more appropriate for a funeral than for the joyful season Christmas is supposed to be. Carols are supposed to be happy and sung in praise of the birth of Jesus. You can save the dirges til Easter.

Today beer can be sold in grocery stores. The law prohibiting it has been in force since 1927. At the moment it is not in every store nor is it all makes of beer available but presumably this will change as time goes by. It was also made mandatory that some of the sales will be of craft beers which is a good thing locally as there is a craft brewery in the town. Not being a beer drinker, it doesn't  make much difference to me, but Matt drinks a beer now and then although as he generally buys what he wants when he is in the liquor store, I guess it won't make much difference to him either. Maybe once they sell wine in the grocery store, that will make a difference too us. I also heard something about selling medical marijuana in the liquor store. How ridiculous. That should be in the drug store if anywhere. They were talking about it on TV and saying it would help to get rid of the "gangs". I don't think so, the big money is in hard drugs. That too won't make any difference to us.

'Tis the season - I love Brie anyway. I especially like it with fruit or fruit flavours. Also, this seems pretty easy.

Brie and Cranberry Bites from The Hot Plate

Amanda Riva - Food Network

Ingredients

¼ cup all purpose flour, for dusting
1 package (17 ¼ ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
½ pound (225 grams) Brie cheese, cut into ¾ – inch cubes
1 cup prepared cranberry sauce
Rosemary Sprigs, for garnish (optional)
salt and pepper
Instructions
1. Heat the oven to 400°F.
2. Sprinkle a clean work surface with a little flour. Unfold the puff pastry on the floured surface. Roll out pastry sheet into a 11 x 16-inch rectangle. Cut the pastry sheet into 24 (3-inch) squares. Press the puff pastry squares into the cups of a mini muffin tin.
3. Drop a piece of Brie into the bottom of each puff pastry cup. Top with a spoonful of cranberry sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Bake for 15 minutes until puff pastry is golden. Cool for 5 minutes before serving with fresh rosemary (if using).

Have a great day

  1. Watched a Ken Burns program on Prohibition last night. Did not know that is how an income tax came into being in the US. They had to replace the lost revenue from sales of liquor and beer. Had no idea you could not buy beer in grocery stores. As for those 'dirge carols', I agree. If 'O come all ye faithful' sounds like a funeral march, who is going to 'come?'

    1. No nor did I Denise. In the UK it was brought in to pay for the Napoleonic wars. No it's been very restricted here, with beer stores and liquor stores and never the twain shall meet although these days the liquor stores do sell beer. You have a good point there.

  2. Beer is sold in grocery stores on the west coast. Hard liquor and wines are sold in grocery stores in CA, but in WA you had to go to the state run liquor stores for the hard stuff. But the year I left, the people voted to do away with the state stores, and now discount liquor stores like Beverages & More have moved in. WA also legalized marijuana for recreational use and I think those are separate stores.

    1. I know in NC we could get beer and wine in the grocery store but liquor has it's own store. Our liquor stores are state run JoJo. We could do with a few discount liquor stores here.

  3. I loved the caroling that went along with the season, but yeah, happy and upbeat, please! Someone's going to get rich off the sale of maryjane. If it lowered my taxes I'd say go ahead, but there's nothing going to lower taxes.

  4. Our laws are really restrictive about the beer and wine sales too. Just made a trip to the liquor store yesterday and refilled my wine stash.
The marijuana really should be sold in the drug store.

  5. Beer wasn't sold in stores before? Weird.
Marijuana shouldn't be sold at all.

    1. No Alex, we had Beer Stores and Liquor stores which also sold wine. Government controlled of course.

They are talking medical marijuana at the moment. I don't know what the justification is for that.

  7. When I first read this, Why do some singers/choirs make Christmas carols sound like dirges? I thought 'dirges' said 'dingoes' and I burst out laughing. Still the same semantics I guess. I wish they sold wine and beer in supermarkets here. It would cut down my shopping trips. Cranberry and Brie go so well together, yum!

  8. I have been horrible in trying to look at all the blogs! I have heard some Christmas carols sung as if they were in prison or going to the morgue. I am one for pot becoming legal but I had to laugh that it is going to be sold at the LCBO because that just means the government wants to make money. I agree that it should be in the pharmacy because it does help with pain. I saw the one special about this little girl who was having over 100 seizures a day. The Dr's gave up. The parents didn't. They found a place in Colorado where these 2 brothers could make marijuana without the high. The last thing they wanted for their child was to be high. The brothers found a way to not have that certain ingredient in it and now the child is 5 years older and has no more seizures! The appetizer sounds appetizing!

    1. It happens sometimes Birgit. Interesting about the pot for the child. I didn`t know it could be doctored so it didn`t give highs.

  9. Our local Wegman carries crafted small batch beers. Some with fun names. But like you, I don't much care either.

    1. Well I am not a beer drinker Ivy, but once in Florida we went into a bar which specialised in such beers and I tried and enjoyed several of them but wouldn`t want to drink them regularly.
