Overindulgence, Updraft.

As you may have noticed, no post yesterday. Have to tell you that for once I bowled well on a Monday. We started early with lots of sandwiches and goodies together with Christmas card exchanges for some. I ate too many brownies and Nanaimo bars. Matt and I were given a whole load to take home so we didn't have to prepare supper last night. However, the scales punished me for my lack of control. I can put on weight so very easily if I am not careful. Of course at this time of the year it is so difficult not munch through all the goodies available. Matt is one of the lucky ones, he can eat what he likes with no adverse affects whatsoever.

I have just finished a great book which I really enjoyed, a first novel by Fran Wilde called Updraft. It
is about a world of fliers and people living in living bone towers (this part puzzled me, there are more books coming so maybe this will be explained) above the clouds, the ground being shrouded in mystery and legend. The story is full of secrets which have to be uncovered by Kirit a young woman who wants to pass her wingtest and become a trader like her mother. Unfottunately, she is a bit of a rebel too. Just to liven up the story there are flying monsters which cannot be seen, they have huge mouths and lots of very nasty sharp teeth. I had trouble putting  this book down. Last night, for instance, I had to force myself to bed at 1 a.m. The general consensus on Book Reads is that this is a book worth reading.

Not sure how much I will be posting over the holidays. I will leave you with the recipe for Champagne Cocktails which we drink on Christmas Day.

In a champagne glass, add a cube of sugar or equivalent amount of loose sugar.
Add a few drops of Angostura Bitters
1/2 a shot of brandy
Top with chilled champagne or if it isn't French, sparkling wine.
Squeeze a little orange peel over the glass and then drop it in.

Drink and enjoy. These are pretty lethal so be careful with them.

Have a great Christmas Week.

  1. It sounds like you had a great day with bowling. I have been indulging as well so I know I will be "good" once the New Year begins (you may see my nose grow with that statement). I was a very bad girl when I turned 19 with brandy (cognac actually) so I shall stay away from this recipe:)-Merry Christmas!!

    1. I prefer to watch it over the holiday as much as I can. Thought your name was Birgit not Pinocchio. Making myself ill with booze never stopped me from drinking it again. It is up to me to control myself, I don't blame the booze. Apart from which I enjoy brandy now and again.

  2. Hi Jo - it's always difficult holding off the good food around - good luck with that side. Glad the bowling was good ... and that champagne cocktail looks delicious .. but plain champers suits me fine! I will have a glass .. but as I'll be driving - that will be it.

Cheers to you both - enjoy the time - Hilary

      Cheers to you too.

  3. I need to get back to counting my WW points. Christmas food and being indoors for winter is a recipe ripe for gaining weight. Though I may have to go out and cut the grass, lol.

    Have a Merry Christmas.

  5. My husband and I have just learned to accept that we are going to indulge a bit between Thanksgiving and New Years. After that, we scale way back on what we eat and lose the extra weight by the end of January.

Merry Christmas! Think of us and our crappy 80 degree weather on Christmas Day. I've never experienced a Christmas over 70 degrees, so 80 just blows my mind.

    1. Yes, I guess I accept it, but I do try to be careful. I don't lose weight that fast.

I actually enjoyed the one or two warm Christmasses we had. Not 80°F though, although I do remember sitting out on the deck with a sleeveless shirt on.

  9. I hear you loud and clear with the putting weight on easily thing! Lucky Matt. Tell him that Pinky said it must be because you can't fatten a thoroughbred! Scotto and I have decided to eat what ever we want and worry about it after the new year. Life's too short. Have a wonderful Christmas Jo x

    1. I just told him Pinky. I just ate a piece of Christmas Cake which I froze last year. He doesn't eat it anyway. I can't worry about it later because it takes forever to get rid of.

  11. Hi Jo,

Oh how I love Nanaimo bars! I've even been to Nanaimo to have a Nanaimo! The bowling will knock off any extra pounds you want to shed.

Seems like you were really engrossed in that book. The drink looks amazing. I'm sure it's great to drink, although I will have to leave it up to my imagination because I don't drink.

Have a magical holiday week, Jo.
