Summer League, The Avengers, Dragon Ships, Paula Deen.

Bowling alleyWednesday our summer league started. What a crowd. The owners had managed to persuade quite a few people from other leagues which happen through the winter. We ended up with 9 teams but then a couple of people dropped out just before the start so the owners will have to re-arrange somewhat. Matt had a pretty good day with some really nice scores. Mine were better than my final average in the winter league, but that is not saying a heck of a lot. However, they weren’t disgraceful. What one of our friends calls a respectable score which I actually find a bit damning LOL.

I might say it was damned cold today. Everyone was complaining about it and it was windy too. Winter seems to have returned.

Tuesday night, I had obtained The Avengers froDragon of the Stars by Alex J Cavanaughm the library so I watched it. Not Matt’s scene at all. He is not into things which are impossible. He wants realism in his movies. However, I watched it. Alex J. Cavenaugh is highly in favour of this movie and it’s follow up and I can see why. Blood, Boobs and Carnage is a favourite saying of his and there was plenty of that, especially the carnage. They made a right wreck of New York City. There were also some space ships which, to me, looked likAvenger Dragon Shipse the Dragon of the Stars from his latest book but more so. I am not really up on Marvel comics so wasn’t 100% sure who all the “heroes” were. Never heard of the Black Widow before. However, I have since read up on the movie and figured out, more or less, who everyone was. I wondered why Superman wasn’t there, but I guess he wasn’t a Marvel comic character. I don’t know.

Paula DeenThis is another of my all time favourite asparagus recipes. Paula Deen is a Southern Cook who made a name for herself with a restaurant called The Lady and Sons which she owns and operates in Savannah, Georgia. We actually went to the restaurant a long time before it became famous and before Paula appeared on her own TV cooking show. A very enterprising southern girl. She recently got into all kinds of trouble because she was sued because she used the “n” word. If you are interested, you can read more about it by following the link. She has had an interesting life.

  1. Glad you finally saw the Avengers! No Superman - he's DC, along with Batman and Wonder Woman. They form the Justice League.
Glad you had a good turnout for the summer leagues.

    1. It is simple Sue. Matt always used to make this, but I need to try it. I have never used Phyllo. Asparagus season is well under way here now too.

  3. That recipe sounds so good! I haven't seen The Avengers because, like Matt, my other half isn't fond of fantasy. I should make a library visit and see if I can borrow it, too.

    1. If you like that kind of movie Helen, it's pretty good. My one complaint, like a lot of movies, there are scenes in the dark or shadow where you can't be sure what's happening. I normally watch them on my laptop but for some reason it wouldn't play. Maybe try again before I return it.

  4. Doesn't sound like the Avengers is my scene either. I cannot stand nudity or gore in movies. The asparagus recipe IS my scene however! One of my friends' steak marinade recipe was chosen for the Seattle Great Steak Challenge in 2010 and she had to cook it at the Seattle Food Festival at the Space Needle and Paula Deen's sons were the judges. She didn't win unfortunately, but she did get to meet them and get autographed cookbooks and a nifty swag bag.

    1. Not much in the way of nudity JoJo. But lots of bash 'em and smash 'em. That sounds fun to be in a Challenge like that. Her sons opened their own restaurant in NC on the islands I believe. Paula has written a lot of cookbooks.

  5. My husband likes the Avengers and movies like it. I'll watch them with him but they aren't my "cup of tea." Sounds like summer bowling will be fun!

What is it with the weather these days? We have had cold weekends for the past 2 weeks and another one slated this weekend when the weekdays are pleasantly warm.

    1. Well our weekdays have been pretty cool lately Betty. Last week shorts, this week long pants.

My hubby won't even watch them or if he does he takes the p**s out of them and drives me nuts.

  6. They did tear the heck out of the city. Good thing it was all make believe. My husband loves sci-fi. I just like Thor. What a great character.

  7. It sounds like you will have fun bowling in the summer too. I liked the Avengers. I thought it was a good rollick. i remember the Paula Dean faux pas. i never totally believe the media since they do insert and edit things so one never gets the whole story. I love the show "Who Do You Think You Are" and she was on this last year. Quite interesting family history

    1. Well if you call it fun to be constantly struggling to get a decent score, I guess it will be Birgit. LOL. Paula really took a pasting with that scandal and as you say, a lot of it was caused by the media. I felt very sorry for her. Don't know the show, but I bet is was interesting.

  8. Hi Jo,

And the ultimate score of 450. Nothing like a bit of five pin bowling. Wish we had it in England.

When I think of "The Avengers", I recall the TV show with John Steed and Emma Peel, amongst others.

Hope it has gotten warmer for you. We are basking in tropical heat :)

  9. Well Gary I did get a 306 in March.

Me too, I always enjoyed that show. That's what I thought of when Alex first talked about them.

It was warm last week until about 2 days ago we were wearing shorts. Back into long pants now though. Supposed to warm up again after this weekend (May 24th) so a holiday on Monday.

  10. I wonder what you mean when you say it's a bit chilly. Our temp last night was 13 degrees Celcius which is 55 Fahrenheit and 27 degrees during the day( 80 Fahrenheit) is that chilly to you? It is to me!

    1. No Pinky, that is NOT chilly to me. I'm talking about 13°C or lower during the day. In fact we had a frost warning a couple of nights ago. 27°C would be a nice day to me.

    2. I didn't think you'd think it was cold. We're all sooks here :)

  11. Oh Jo, you brought a big smile and laugh to me today. Wondering where Superman was. That's brilliant. Love it. Thanks the smile and yum on the food.

    1. Ivy, I used to read Superman comics as a kid, but had no idea which comic it was. If you've got time with all that stock, do try the recipe.

  12. Oh GMD, that asparagus wrapped in phyllo looks so good and simple I AM going to try it. I won't even need an Eva-sitter for this one.

I'm going to have to check out some of these movies. I've seen the Superman, Batman ones, but not these. I always thought comics were comics. Woops. Love you.

    1. It is delicious especially if you know how to handle Phyllo. I must admit I don't but I'm going to have to learn. Matt used to make these but doesn't any more.

I enjoyed Avengers and hope to play it again before I return it. Love you too Eva
