Shoulder.

I am sorry if I haven’t made it to visit everyone in the last day or so. I have had a bad shoulder for some years. It comes and goes, right now it is visiting me with a vengeance and I am feeling quite sorry for myself. I went to a specialist a few years ago and was told there wasn’t anything he could do. It was a holiday yesterday, but maybe I will call the doc today and see if there is anything new. The result being, I may not be around too much and my blogs may be a bit sparse for a while. Sorry everyone.

As I mentioned, it is a holiday weekend here in Canada, Victoria Day or May 24th weekend (nowhere near the 24th this year) and so we have fireworks. We had them on Saturday night, we had them on Sunday night and we have them on Sunday night (whilst writing). Sunday night they even went on til about 1 a.m. I sounded like someone was letting off bangers in a barrel or something. Idiots. I always worry about the animals and birds. Wild ones in particular. They must be terrified.

I was looking for something for supper and decided I might try this. Not today though. Not in the mood. We did have fish, a simple recipe I found which turned out to be delicious. I bullied Matt into cooking it.

Garlic Shrimp With Asparagus and Lemon

About This Recipe

"This easy sauté uses one pan and is ready in under 30 minutes but the result is wonderful. A real taste of spring with the asparagus and lemon. Adapted from Fine Cooking magazine."

Garlic Shrimp and Asparagus

Ingredients

1 lb shrimp, medium to large, peeled and deveined
1 pinch black pepper, to taste
1 lemon
4 tablespoons olive oil or 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
4 medium garlic cloves, sliced thinly
3/4 lb asparagus, tough ends snapped off and cut into 2 inch lengths ( about 2 cups)
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2/3 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

Directions

  1. Place shrimp on paper towels and dry very well.
  2. Sprinkle shrimp with a bit of the pepper.
  3. Using a vegetable peeler, peel off strips of the lemon peel and then cut the strips into very thin long pieces; be sure to peel only the yellow part of the peel, not the bitter white part.
  4. Cut lemon in half and juice it into a small dish, removing seeds.
  5. Heat a deep 12 inch skillet (preferably NOT non-stick) over medium high heat for 1 minute.
  6. Add 2 Tbsp of the oil and heat until it's shimmering hot -- just a few seconds.
  7. Add the shrimp in a single layer and do not disturb it; let cook for about 2 minutes until browned.
  8. Turn shrimp over and brown the other side, about 1 1/2 minutes, then transfer to a plate. Shrimp should not be cooked through.
  9. Reduce heat to medium-low and add garlic, stirring for 30 seconds.
  10. Add asparagus, lemon zest strips, red pepper flakes and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes.
  11. Add chicken broth and cover, simmering for 1-2 minutes until asparagus is almost done.
  12. Stir cornstarch with 1 Tbsp water and stir into the pan.
  13. Add shrimp back to the pan and cook another 1-2 minutes until done.
  14. Stir in 1 Tbsp lemon juice, then taste and add more juice and pepper if needed.
Have a great day

  1. Jo, Sorry to hear about your shoulder. I also have shoulder issues and have had injections twice which have helped so I know how bad it can get. Idiots around here set off fireworks Sunday night (illegal) and next weekend will be unbearable as it is our holiday. Take care.

    1. They didn't offer me anything Denise. No injections, no nothing. As I said will call the doc again and see what can. We don't have animals but I worry about the wildlife because I have seen what happens with dogs. Noisy fireworks at least should be banned

  2. I'm sorry about your shoulder. Do you think you'll have surgery? Is it a torn rotator cuff? Everything is falling early this May. Our Memorial Day weekend is this weekend. Usually it falls closer to the 28th or so. I used to love fireworks and bought lots of them before I had my dogs. But now that I have them and see how much distress they are in, I have come to loathe them. :( We live near a small bay/inlet and this time of year people start setting them off on weekend nights even though it's not the 4th of July yet.

    1. Don't know JoJo. The surgeon I saw a few years ago said he couldn't do anything for me. I knew your Memorial Day was next weekend. Usually our Victoria and your Memorial fall on the same day. People are so inconsiderate with fireworks. The sparkly ones are OK, it's the loud bangs which scare the animals.

  3. Sorry, I hope it doesn't interfer with your bowling, but really they can't do anything? We need doctors with that empathy factor of that Star Trek show - they experience the same pain as their patient - maybe then something could be done! Wishing you health!

    1. No Yolanda, it doesn't do that, wrong shoulder. If it did I would be really What a good idea, docs with empathy pain. Wouldn't that make a difference. But then they might be unable to do their jobs anyway. Thanks.

  4. You shouldn't irritate your shoulder with typing. It needs to heal. Did you blog during the A-Z? That's probably what did it. :) Just kidding. Too bad the doctor didn't help you find relief.

    1. Thanks. Funnily enough it often hurts most when I am sitting in an arm chair reading. Turns out my regular doc is away and the place is closed this week. I can go to the main office but that's in the next town.

  5. I understand pain for years now since I have Ehlers-Danlos -the hypermobility type. I can easily dislocate any joint and doing anything cause friction. The pain gets worse and worse as the years go by and it is in every joint. Since my problem can't be found with a blood test or any x-ray etc... many Dr's just don't listen to me. I have had to be so insistent. I wonder if you went to , not a walk-in clinic but one step up. Now they have it linked to the hospital where I live but it is not emergency-Ahh! Urgent care. My hubby had to have shoulder replacement. Others have had rotator cuff issues (his is cause my wear and tear and rheumatoid arthritis so he had to get the full replacement). You may need those shots to ease the pain. The Dr's have to listen! They often don't especially when one is a woman. Do any rubs help? Just to ease the pain a little. This recipe sounds good also which I may make (sans asparagus:))

    1. I had never heard of that before Birgit, just Googled it. You are the type of person that makes me think, what the hell am I moaning about. I didn't go into a walk in clinic Birgit, I went to my family doctor who referred me to a surgeon who specialized in shoulders. Here you cannot just go see a surgeon any time you want. He didn't really say what it was although I had all kinds of tests, MRI included. I do use Icy Hot occasionally - the pads. I also have Tylenol 3 to take if I need it. I try not to take too many but sometimes I just have to take a couple.

    2. Oh I am glad you saw your Dr. I am a Canuck too who lives in the Niagara Region so I know what you mean. You are entitled to moan:) Pain is pain and it is very difficult to deal with especially when you can't do what you take for granted. I, unfortunately, live on Tylenol 3's which I hate. The great news was back in November there was a few hours where the pain lifted and I had no desire, wish or want for any Tylenol. My hubby was great those few hours too. This made me feel great because it told me I am not addicted and that is what I needed to know

    3. Haven't seen the doc this time Birgit, phoned on Tuesday and the place is closed for a week. I could traipse over to Cambridge but..... I am not afraid of addiction to T 3s, don't take enough, at the moment anyway. The Brits did a study on addiction to medications and found if people were given addictive meds for real pain, when the pain had gone, they generally were not addicted.

  6. Sorry about your shoulder; wise to call the doctor to see if they have any further suggestions. That does seem like a long time for fireworks to go on. We used to stay home in Koda's older years on the Fourth of July since he didn't like the fireworks (which a display went off 1/2 mile from us). I do agree it is scary for the animals.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    1. Thanks Betty. I can't believe we even had a couple going off tonight. I certainly tried to protect my dogs from all the bangs.

I have felt a bit better today thank you.

    1. Thanks Diane. I have Tylenol 3 which has codeine in it. Don't take it until I have to usually.

  9. Sorry about your shoulder Jo - I've had shoulder problems for years after a whiplash - just recently visits to an osteopath have been helping more than anything else. Ibuprofen helps to dull the pain for me but you need to take it with food or it causes stomach upsets. I hope you feel a bit better soon.

    1. Thanks Fil. Ibuprophen is not allowed with all the meds I take but I find the Tylenol 3 does the job OK.

  10. I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder, Jo. I struggled on for years with a bad shoulder which successive doctors said was arthritis but eventually, when I could barely move it at all due to excruciating pain I got sent for an MRI and, guess what, it was something else altogether. It's now fixed, so it's worth persisting.

    1. I had an MRI Helen, I don't remember what they said it was now. I had to wait so long to see the surgeon that the excruciating pain had gone. Since that time, it has returned periodically. Never gone completely but sometimes it is worse than others.
