Super Moon, Reading, Bowling,

Well I looked at the super moon on Saturday night. I am afraid it looked like any other moon I have ever seen. Somewhat disappointing.

I am currently reading The Soldier Son Trilogy which I got from the library. It is by Robin Hobb whose books I love. However, I am not so in love with these. Excellent story but I found the first book very heavy going. On checking my records at the library I see I actually borrowed it in 2009 but apart from recognising the cover, I had no memory of reading the book at all. I persevered and am reading book 2, Forest Mage, which I am finding much better so far, we will see how it proceeds. There are two possible ways (as far as I can see) for the story to unfold and I am not sure which way I want it to go. I wrote this earlier and have been reading it pretty solidly since. This time I am really enjoying the book. I am glad I persevered.

Tomorrow is, of course, league bowling and I do so hope we give a better showing of ourselves than we did last week. Fingers crossed except that makes it difficult to hold the ball.

Being a chocoholic, I couldn't pass off this easy chocolate dessert. Of course for me it requires a dollop of cream.

Quick Chocolate Fudge Pie

1 cup (250 ml) sugar
1/2 cup (125 ml) butter
2 egg yolks
2 oz (55 g) melted unsweetened chocolate
1/3 cup (80 ml) all-purpose flour
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
1 cup (250 ml) coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans, or whole peanuts
2 egg whites, beaten until stiff

1. Cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the egg yolks and chocolate. Add the flour, vanilla, and nuts, mixing to

2. combine thoroughly. Fold in the beaten egg whites. Pour into a well greased 8- to 9-inch (20 - 23 cm) pie pan and bake in a preheated 325F (165C) oven for 30 minutes.

Servings: 8
Yield: Makes 1 pie to serve 6 to 8.

  1. I've seen the super moon before and agree, big deal. So it is closer and looks bigger, it is still far away. I struggled through 'The Summer Before the War', but when I got to the end the book described the cemetery in Belgium that I blogged about for Veterans Day. I actually cried. Find it hard to believe that is a Weight Watchers dessert. Sounds yummy.

    1. Actually, when I checked last night, it was very bright Denise, it was almost light as day at midnight. Sounds like a difficult book to read. No not Weight Watchers, World Wide Recipes.com

    2. Yes, it was very bright. But happens often out here in a cloudless sky. Recipe makes sense now.

  3. The moon here was quite a bit lower than usual, and that's about it. Kind of cool, but not very super.

You know, I've had very few books that I've persevered through and led to a big pay off. Most that I start off not enjoying just lead to me still not enjoying them. I'm glad this series is turning out well for you, though.

BTW, I tried that curry mac and cheese recipe over the holidays and my family loved it. My "best ever", they said. You win! ...for now.

    1. I have certainly seen bigger moons Bryan, but not brighter.

Yes, it's odd, the second book I had trouble putting down last night.

Did you, glad it was popular. Haven't tried it myself. Made Pho again tonight. We both love that.

    2. Small world. I actually had pho, too. Been having it every single day since last week. What I do is put my bones/broth ingredients in a slow cooker, put it on low, and just let it cook continuously. Each night the wife and I scoop out just enough broth for two bowls of pho, replace the lost liquid in the slow cooker, and then let it continue to cook. The Asian mart near us has amazing bones, and we got 8 full nights of pho broth before they finally disintegrated.

    3. I hide my head in shame Bryan. I cheat and use Campbell's Pho broth. Plus follow the recipe I posted a week or two back.

  4. Back when I was a kid nobody had ever heard of 'supermoons'. Not that I remember anyway.

    1. True Pinky, I don't remember hearing about them until recent years.

  5. I really don’t even know what a super moon is so..oh well. If you took out this book before, it must not have made much of an impression since you don’t remember what it was about.

    1. I thought the same Birgit. However, I really enjoyed the second book and am picking up the third today.

Not sure what a super moon is either, just closer to us I think.

  6. You're not the only one who found that trilogy of Robin Hobb's heavy going. I'm a great fan of hers but I just lost interest in it early on and never read the final book. Everything else she's written I've not wanted to put down.

    1. Funnily enough, I really enjoyed the second book. It is taking one heck of a long time to get to the end, but it was more interesting Helen. Library has the third book ready for me.
