Balconies, Landlords, Bits and Pieces.

Monday they finally started preparing to do the balconies which we had been told they would start in April?? Matt said they were talking outside, quite loudly, at 6 ish and he figured people wouldn't be too happy about that. All they seem to have done is bring round a lot of machines and other stuff but they haven't yet, as far as I can tell, done anything about scaffolding etc. They do have one machine which beeps when it backs up. I wonder how tired of that we will be by the time this is all over. There is one tenant who plants a garden every year but he sure won't be able to do that this year.

Actually I am somewhat upset with the realtor who manages this property. I directed them to something in our bay in the underground garage and the next thing I know we get a letter accusing us of having installed a power line in order to charge our car? We have a gas engine and that would be pointless for batteries. We were told we were contravening the tenancy agreement and the implication was that we had been stealing electricity. I am pretty upset about the whole business. I phoned them and said the electric outlet was nothing to do with us, I am pretty sure it has been there since before we came here. The owner said OK, she would strike it out, but I am still somewhat teed off about the whole business.

Our feet were done today, Tuesday,, feels so much better. I also did a fair amount of cooking having made a large batch of Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls. We then shot off to the asparagus farm and I got more in order to make soup. I have the first part - the purée - made but will finish the rest today. Also, much to my surprise, our new coffee pot arrived on Monday but as we were bowling, had to go fetch it from the post office. Whilst there I saw a set of stamps showing all the Star Trek characters. I think I will buy a set. Always been a big fan of Star Trek.

Here's a new recipe to me.

Skillet-Baked Eggs and Asparagus

Asparagus and eggs have an affinity for each other. The voluptuous yolk softens and smoothes the grassy sharpness of the vegetable, while the asparagus brightens up the dull richness of the egg. The
pair’s most classic expression is asparagus hollandaise, but that is too fussy and time-consuming a preparation for a regular home-cooked breakfast. This dish combines the flavors in a time- and cook-friendly way.

3 Tbs olive oil, more for drizzling
¾ lbs asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 scallions, white and light green parts, thinly sliced
8 large eggs
6 Tbs roughly chopped soft herbs like basil, cilantro, chives or parsley use at least 2
1/3 cup heavy cream
2 Tbs grated Parmesan
Salt
black pepper, to taste
Lemon wedges, for serving
Flaky sea salt for sprinkling

1. Heat the oven to 300°F. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering. Add the asparagus and the scallions and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until asparagus is browned and tender.

2. Whisk together the eggs, 4 tablespoons of the herbs, and cream. Whisk in Parmesan, salt and pepper. Pour the egg mixture over asparagus and place the skillet in the oven.

3. Bake for about 20 minutes, until set, but still slightly jiggly in the center. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before serving. It is best warm, not hot.

4. Squeeze one or two lemon wedges over it, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with flaky sea salt and remaining herbs. Cut into wedges.

Servings: 4

  1. That recipe almost sounds like a quiche and looks interesting. I'm a big fan of asparagus, but I haven't been to a farm to buy any. . .
Re your landlord - When I reported a decorative item stolen at my last place (townhouse), the strata council tried to get me to fix holes for hanging items - which were in place, when we moved in, done by the previous owner. I refused to pay as I told them those hanging hooks were in place, and the inspector said they posed no threat to the siding. They were inspecting my place after I reported an item stolen - where do these people put their brains?? I don't blame you feeling disgruntled. . .

    1. It is a bit like a quiche isn't it DG. We've never had a problem with our landlords in 15 years. I really don't know why they thought we had done this.

  2. Hi Jo - gosh how frustrating re the outlet - I'd confirm your telecon in writing ... agreeing with DG above.

That asparagus recipe does sound good - and a great idea for a picnic, or buffet type meal ... other than just an excellent supper type dish ... cheers Hilary

  3. Wow Jo, I had no idea you were so talented that could could install your own power line in an underground garage. It's stories like yours and of my condo friends that keep me in my single home. I just have to fight with the neighbors, lol.

    1. You have no idea of my hidden talents Denise. The wiring, now I have looked at it, is inside some casing of a kind too. Very professional job. First problem we've had in almost 16 years and the believed me when I told them it was nothing to do with us.

  4. That's so nuts. Yes, you and Matt are skilled electricians - you installed it, stole electricity, and then decided to make it real fun and tell them. What????

    1. Actually Alex, Matt was an electrician. He trained in Chatham Dockyard, UK where many famous ships were built. However he hasn't been an electrician in many years and is certainly not fit enough to do the job. Looks to me as though it's been there as long as the building has.

  5. I'm glad that they believed you. I don't understand why they would blame you for something so ridiculous. Did they find out who put it in? Maybe the people that had that bay before you? And why did they just notice it now?

    1. Because I drew their attention to something else JoJo. I suspect it's been there longer than the previous people. Looks like a very old connection to me.

  6. Are the people who run the building on drugs?? They think a couple of seniors would install this and then tell the owners about this? Are they really that stupid or that vindictive? I would document everything because I don't like how the owners/supers treat you. Glad your feet are done and glad you are enjoying your favourite veggie

    1. I don't like it too much either Birgit. Yes, we would be really stupid to install it and then make sure the owners knew.

So am I glad about my feet and you can bet I am enjoying the asparagus. Such a short season.

  7. I too would have been upset over the incident with the electricity outlet. Common sense wasn't working here on their part that they automatically accused without thinking it through and calling first rather than sending such a threatening letter.

    1. I so totally agree Betty. As Matt has since pointed out, the outlet is so high we couldn't have used it anyway - or not without a ladder.

  8. I agree with what Birgit said. They must be idiots or bullies to try to blame you. And the prospect of a continually beeping machine would drive me bananas. I hope it's not going to be too painful.

    1. I think they fired off their guns too quickly Pinky. Luckily it doesn't continuously beep thank goodness.

  9. The beeping does get on your nerves after a while. We had a building going up behind us where they had unexpected difficulties so we had beeping machinery for months - and now we have the residents' barking/howling dogs whenever they go out which is frequent. Can't win really. We - all the surrounding neighbours that is - have decided to report them to the local council since they've ignored all our requests to deal with it but you can't do that with a building contractor.

    1. It was very noisy this afternoon Helen. I was wondering why none of the workmen could put down a tool or whatever rather than throw it down which makes lots of noise. Sad for the dogs though if it gets dealt with properly.

    2. Tradesmen don't seem to grasp how noisy they are, do they.

The reason we've all been avoiding approaching the council about the problem is for the dogs' sakes but it's reaching unbearable now. The owners would only get a warning at first so they do have the opportunity to put things right if they want to.

    3. I guess they don't care Helen. I am sure it does get unbearable, I have lived near barking dogs.
