Z is for Zebra - A to Z Challenge 2015

Originally I wrote my blog about zucchini, but having written about Zebra on both of my previous A to Z challenges, I couldn’t resist checking on whether it is considered edible. It is, in fact.

Zebras
I present you with a dazzle of zebra.
Zebras2
It doesn't really surprise me that they are eaten because horse is eaten in France and there are many similarities. There are lots of things which are eaten in other parts of the world which we would never consider. Dogs for instance or monkey brains. I am pretty good at trying most foods but I think I would balk at some of them.  But then I have never been starving and then I believe you will eat anything. I have also been told that there are zebra farms and my friend said she had tried zebra meat but didn't think that much of it.

Cooking with Zebra

Zebra is very lean, low fat and tastes excellent.  Unusually for a red meat, zebra has a very light flavour.

Zebra steaks should be cooked like a nice piece of Venison but don't cook more than than medium rare.  If you want to be really bold, try it as a carpaccio.

Zebra Stew

  • 1 ½ lbs. zebra meat, using topside
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Good pinch of mixed herbs
  • 1 lb. tomatoes, peeled
  • Salt and pepper
  • Pinch of celery salt
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion
  • Pinch of paprika
  • 1 cup stock or Knorr-Swiss onion soup
  • ½ cup cream
Cut meat into stewing pieces, dip in seasoned flour and brown in oil.  Add tomatoes, quartered and seeds removed, then the stock or soup and seasoning.  Simmer until tender, depending on age of zebra. Just before serving add cream and a little red wine, if available.

That is the end of my contributions to the A to Z for this year. I've had fun, I hope you have too.

Have a great day

  1. I've never tried zebra, but then again, I've never had horse either. I'm not sure I would eat it unless I had no other choice. Strange how much our culture can have such a strong influence on our food choices. I wish I could have participated a little more in A-Z, but I'm glad you had fun with it. :)

    1. Yes it was fun Elise. I have never eaten zebra but I have eaten horse in France many times. The first time many years ago, I thought I was eating some of the most tender beef imaginable. The following day Madame asked if I liked horsemeat, I didn't know eaten it. I was staying en famille with a boyfriend's family.

  6. Hi Jo - I hadn't heard of it being eaten .. not surprised though ... I'd have thought we'd have zebra farms over here .. interesting though to read about it - I'd have the Carpaccio .. in fact I've never eaten horse .. but have had ostrich .. but not many meat oddities ... Well done on finishing though .. and love reading about food - cheers Hilary

    1. Thanks Hilary. Surprised you never ate it in South Africa. A local friend was there a few years back and she tried it.

  7. Think I'll pass. Pretty sure the 'hamburgers' we all ordered at the Moulin Rouge on that school trip was horsemeat. All of us were like, 'ew these burgers are so gross' and I overheard one of our chaperones opine that he thought it might be horse. I lost a lot of weight on that trip. Maybe I should go over to Europe again.....good for weight loss. lol

    1. Dunno about burgers, seldom eat them, but a fillet steak from a horse beats a beef fillet every time, it's so tender. Don't need to go to Europe, just come to my home, I bet you wouldn't eat a lot of what we cook.

    1. Thanks David and no, I don't suppose you would find it there. However, I have eaten ostrich over here so wouldn't be surprised to find zebra in specialty shops.

    1. Don't really see why not Spacerguy, horses have been food in France for years and I don't see a lot of difference. I don't know how long they have been eaten in Africa but I bet they were food before the Europeans started invading the country.

  12. Never thought of it before with zebra meat being a very lean meat and low calorie. I guess I never thought of "unusual" meat and how they would taste or calorie cut, etc. I think it might be interesting to try it some time :)

Congrats for making it through! Your theme was a great one; food is always very dear to my heart!

    1. Thanks Betty. You too made it. There is a store in the area which specialises in unusual meats. For all I know they might have some.

  13. Hmmm. I hopped into bed last night and realized I never read your blog. I was sure it would be zucchini, something I eat, not zebra, which I don't think I would. Congrats on finishing the challenge. Again!

    1. I replied to this hours ago but it seems to have disappeared into cyber space. I joked about you hopping into bed!! Most people say they wouldn't try it, but they would if they were hungry enough of course. Congratulations to you too Denise.
