Cute Animals

A couple of days ago, I posted a picture of a Koala being given water by a firefighter. My friend sent me a link to an article in the UK Daily Mail which has the video of the whole incident plus news about that Koala and another one who have been treated for burned paws. If you would like to see it click here. I believe it is also on YouTube. Australians themselves don't appear to be as enamoured with Koalas as the rest of the world, and from what my friend tells me I can see why, but even so, the pictures of them are so cute you can't help falling in love with them. My friend in Oz also sent me a cute article and picture see here, again from the Daily Mail which I thought you would like to see while we are being in a cute mood. A dormouse disturbed during his winter sleep is now in a safe place to continue his sleep until spring when he will be released to find himself a lady dormouse. Apparently he didn't awaken during all the disturbance of being placed on a rose for a photo shoot. Of course now I have to post one of the cute pictures another friend sent me the other day. This time of a baby hedgehog. Matt actually ate hedgehog stew once, cooked by a gypsy customer of his in the UK. He said it was delicious. I must admit they are cuter like this than they are when they grow up. Some babies don't look a bit cute but this one does. Another photo from the Victoria fire pictures on the internet, which appealed to me, was yet another baby. A sugar glider. This was an animal I was unfamiliar with so had to look it up on Wikipedia. However, here is another rescued baby. This one reminds me a bit of a Furby. At least in this picture although the adults certainly don't look like Furbies. Hunting through the pictures for this one of the sugar glider, I came across a burned out house with a bunch of porcelain dolls. The heads of the dolls had all survived and I was thinking someone should invent a building material with similar properties. Matt said it was too fragile, but there must be someone clever out there who could amalgamate several materials. This morning I am having my locks shorn really early, so that's it for today. Here is another recipe from The Best Three and Four Ingredient Cookbook. This is for Poussin which is what the English call a young hen, it is similar to our Cornish Rock Hens in North America. Chili-spiced Poussin. When you are short of time these spicy poussins make a quick alternative to a traditional roast. Serve with a leafy salad. Serves four. 2 poussins or Cornish hens 1 Tbs chili powder 1 tsp ground cumin From the store cupboard 3 Tbs olive oil salt and ground black pepper Spatchcock one poussin, remove the wishbone and split the bird along each side of the backbone and remove it. Press down on the breastbone to flatten the bird. Push a metal skewer through the wings and breast to keep the bird flat, then push a second skewer through the thighs and breast. Spatchcok the second poussin in the same way. Combine the chili, cumin, oil and seasoning. Brush over the poussins. Preheat the grill (broiler). Lay the birds, skin side down, on a grill rack and grill (broil) 15 minutes. Turn over and grill for a further 15 minutes until cooked through. Remove the skewers and split each bird in half along the breastbone. Serve drizzled with pan juices. MY NOTE: I don't know how a British poussin compares with a Cornish hen, but most people I know serve a whole hen per person. I leave this up to you and your appetite. Have a great day.

  2. I'm sorry to hear of koalas in pet cages in a shop. I hate to see wild animals for sale this way. They can be pretty dangerous if frightened. They have very long claws.

  3. No one in their right minds would want a pet koala. Not only is it terribly unkind to keep them confined, they are not very bright and they scratch like mad, apart from pissing on everything in sight! But they are incredibly cute to look at, because they never lose that "baby" look that we find so appealing.

You might care to look up "drop bears" on Wikipedia:-)

You know, I never even realised hedgehogs have ears! We don't have hedgehogs in Oz so I haven't seen many of them, and certainly no baby ones. What a cute little fellow that one is:-)

  4. Satima: Annalou talks of them dropping on her study roof all the time and not being able to sleep camping because they were dropping on the roof all the time. They sound like right f**ing nuisances in fact and, I gather from her, not very bright.

True, I didn't realise hedgehogs had ears either.

Yeh, they look cute. Probably wouldn't be so cute if you come across one on a country walk.

  6. Well you can cuddle koalas if you don't mind getting peed on apparently. But if anything frightens them, watch those claws.
