Wordpress. Dinner, Hypoglycemia.

WordpressYou know, I do not like Wordpress. If you read and then comment on someone’s Wordpress blog you are then asked to ‘confirm follow’. Once maybe;  but every time you make a comment you are asked to do the same. It’s a flaming nuisance. I don’t understand why they can’t do it once and that’s it.

Saturday night we went to have dinner at a friend’s home and our main course was Rouladen which we haven’t eaten in years. A girlfriend’s mother used to make them and we always enjoyed them. I don’t really know why I have never cooked them myself. Below is a recipe I found from AllRecipes.com. There seem to be several different recipes available. Something which happens with an old, traditional dish.

hypoglycemiaWe had wine with our meal and later when we were home I started to feel as though I had had too much wine. I didn’t take a lot of notice at first, and went to bed. I woke an hour later and felt as though I had been “on the mop” for hours. My brain slowly told me I was probably having a sugar low (hypoglycemia) so I heaved myself out of bed and checked my readings, as I thought, very low so I ate some honey which does the trick. This is something people with diabetes need to watch for – very occasionally you can feel and behave as if you are drunk when in fact you have hypoglycemia. This can actually be very dangerous especially if hypoglycemia2others with you just assume the worst and don’t give you any help, and if the readings go low enough, you do need help. Most people with diabetes carry some emergency sugar source with them, I carry gummy bears in my purse I also have small cans of very sugary drinks at home including one in the bedside locker which I should have drunk last night instead of staggering to the living room to take my readings. As you can see from the above, confusion is a symptom too. Highlighted above is a very good article I have just been reading. I didn’t realise this is something non diabetics can also suffer from and the article explains why and what to do. To emphasize the seriousness, a young woman who was a friend’s girlfriend, died last year because of untreated hypoglycemia.

German Rouladen

Recipe by
Serves 6

"Meat rolls filled with bacon, onions and pickles. Delicious, easy recipe learned while visiting Germany. "Rouladen
  • 1/2 pounds flank steak
  • German stone ground mustard, to taste
  • 1/2 pound thick sliced bacon
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar dill pickle slices
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cube beef bouillon

Directions
  1. Cut the flank steak into thin filets; about 1/4 inch thick and 3 inches wide.
  2. Generously spread one side of each filet with mustard to taste. Place bacon, onions and pickle slices on each filet and form into a roll. Use string or toothpicks to hold the roll together.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt butter. Place the rolls in the butter and sauté until browned.
  4. Pour in 2 1/2 cups of water and add the bouillon cube; stirring to dissolve the bouillon cube. Simmer the rolls for about an hour.
  1.  My Comments: The juice is served as a gravy. I just read another recipe which recommends adding red wine to the pot as well as a can of tomatoes. This recipe doesn't say anything about thickening the gravy, never having done it myself, I don't know, but you might want to be prepared to do so.
Have a great day

  1. I don't like Wordpress either. That's terrific information on hypoglycemia - thank you. I like the recipe but I don't think I'd won't to add tomatoes. Very attraction looking dish. :))

    1. I hadn't realised it applied to people who don't have diabetes. Rouladen are delicious.

  2. I hate Wordpress too. Nothing but trouble. My hubby had a hypoglycemia incident a few weeks ago. Lucky for him I recognized it b/f he did and while I made him take his reading, I leapt into the kitchen and fixed a bowl of fruit for him. Once the juice hit his system he went back to normal.

    1. Is Russel diabetic? If he is, I find a teaspoon of hone works wonders. Also he should carry glucose tablets or hard candies when he is out and about.

  3. A no bread sandwich, love it!
I carry and have orange flavored orange glucose tablets - easy quick and always handy in the bedside table or purse.

    Stay well!

    1. I hadn't thought of it like that. I carried glucose tablets for years but later found hard candies better. Honey too.

  4. Next time just drink that sugary drink.
I hadn't noticed the follow issue with Wordpress blogs though.

  5. I'm not big on Wordpress either. They say it's supposed to have a better design and allow you to do more with your site, but I've never had a problem making our site look and function exactly the way we want it to look and function.

Also, at first mention of it I kept asking myself "what is rouladen?" Then I see the recipe, and more importantly 'Meat rolls filled with bacon' so yes, I'm sold!

    1. I don't know about using WP but I do know about commenting and it's ridiculous, IMHOP.

Ah well, it's German innit? Delicious by any name.

  6. Hi Jo - I just use my WP account .. doesn't cost anything to set up .. and means I move between the two systems with ease .. Wordpress people have the same hassles with Blogger .. it's life ...

Glad the hypoglycemia has settled down ... the rolls look interesting and tasty .. cheers Hilary

    1. But I don't have to keep confirming I'm following with your site Hilary - I didn't even realise you were using Wordpress. Now, I wonder why I have to with everyone else's WP.

I love Rouladen and had forgotten about them.

  7. I find Wordpress to be very bossy. I started a separate WP blog and it took over my online identity. It affected all my commenting until I logged out of it completely. Whilst I don't have diabetes I carry lollies around with me all the time in case I get a sugar low feeling. If I go too long without food I get a hot, sweaty, fainty feeling which I assume is low blood sugar. I've been like it all my life.

    1. Never tried to use WP. But reading Hilary's comment above, it seems that it isn't necessary to have the "confirm follow" all the time.

Have you ever been checked for diabetes?

So sorry about how the siege ended. Extremists once again I assume.

  8. Hi Jo,

I absolutely detest Wordpress and I dread it whenever I comment on such a format. It seems they want my name, rank and serial number, along with the follow application that comes up every time. I just ignore that part.

Heck, blogger is pretty confusing these days, what with the mystery word verification that folks hadn't asked for in the pop up comment format.

    Glad the honey helped you.

I love that recipe, minus the pickles. I hate pickles!

    1. I know Gary, it's really irritating isn't it?

Yes, that was odd about the Captcha suddenly appearing on so many blogs.

The honey is good. Our hostess on Saturday pulled out the pickle before she ate the Rouladen. She doesn't like them, I said why use them, she said for the flavor.

  9. I'm not diabetic but I suffer with hypoglycaemia due to radical stomach surgery many years ago. It's very unpleasant and thinking straight is very hard so I'm not surprised you didn't think about your drink. Glad it all worked out for you.

    1. Sorry to hear about this Helen. I hope you don't get it often as it is miserable when you do. I have started taking my readings before supper when I usually take my second pill, if they are low, I don't take it. Drink never even crossed my mind. I had trouble enough deciding I was having an episode anyway.
