Shopping, VCR,

I have just tried my grocery store's Click and Collect programme. Being my first time, I forgot a couple of things and left it too late to change my order but apart from that, it was sooooo easy. You order online, pick a time frame to collect and they deliver it to your car and load the trunk for you.  Guess who will be doing this every time in future? Much less wearing on the legs. I get a month's free trial of the service after which time they charge me $3 which is worth it to me to save the pain in my legs after traipsing round the store. Now all I need is someone to come and put it all away for me. Don't want much do I?

Well, it appears that our VHS player is kaput. I have lots of VHS tapes which are now useless I guess. Somewhat infuriating. I doubt if it is worth repairing, probably cost a fortune to do so. Just trying it out has screwed up a couple of tapes anyway. I have no idea how long we have had it, but basically we mostly play DVDs now but when there is nothing on TV, we occasionally play an old tape. Like a couple of weeks ago we played a Victor Borge tape which had us in stitches even though we have seen it before although not recently of course. I also have some personal stuff on them so will have to see if I can find somewhere that will copy it off for me.

Garlic Shrimp with Asparagus

serve this over pasta to take advantage of the sauce, or with big chunks of french bread

2 Tbs olive oil
2 1/2 cups  sliced asparagus
4 cloves garlic, minced
salt and pepper
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes
1 1/2 lbs shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 cup dry white wine
2 Tbs lemon juice

heat oil in sauté pan, add asparagus, garlic, and spices, cook for 5 minutes add shrimp, cook until shrimp turns pink.

stir in wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil, remove from heat and serve.

Servings: 4

  1. I have some old VCR tapes of TV interviews I have done and some Board meetings. I have thought about having Costco copy them to DVD, but then who cares? I haven't watched them in years. I do have an old VCR player downstairs that my son was just teasing me about on Sunday.
I do not mind walking around the store, but I do hate putting everything away. My son uses 'click list' which makes shopping with Charlie much easier.

    1. I have my first honeymoon on tape amongst other things. I kind of would like to keep it.

I used to enjoy walking around the store Denise, but these days my legs give me too much pain.

  2. Some people love having someone else shop, but it just seems weird to me.

    1. I love shopping Alex, but my legs don't like it any more I'm afraid. I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

  3. Hi Jo - that makes utter sense about the shopping ... I got Waitrose to deliver to my uncle at his home (they do that in the UK but you can have click and collect) ... he rang me (other way round of course) with what he wanted I ordered it for him and they delivered it ... he was amazed and left him free to totter around for the things he personally wanted. Supper looks good! Cheers Hilary

    1. I certainly found it helpful Hilary. Do you have Zehr's or Loblaw's group of companies in BC? There is another store locally that will deliver too, I understand, but as I normally shop at Zehr's and collect their points, it wouldn't make sense for me to change.

  4. Some places here will do it for free. My friend gets hers done for free at Walmart. (Of all places.)

    1. My local Walmart doesn't have a grocery dept. I don't think, very small store. Free is good Diane, but for $3 it saves my legs a lot.

  5. The shrimp and asparagus looks delicious - I am going to try that recipe. You can have your VHS movies transferred to DVD, I am not sure of the cost though.

    1. I am sure there are places here that do such conversion Tuedessa, but as you say, we don't know the cost. Probably a lot when one considers how many VHS tapes I have.

  6. I won’t use this but I think it is excellent for people who can’t get out due to health issues so I’m glad this will work for you and that you get some good fresh produce. I have some VHS and will not part with them unless I can find it on DVDs

    1. I can get out, but traipsing around the store is pretty painful by the end Birgit. I know what you mean, I screwed up a Dean Martin tape last night.

  7. I've never shopped online. I must give it a go. I just worry about them picking my fruit and not doing it properly.

    1. My store assures one that the 'pickers' will choose the best fruit and veg available. Try it once or maybe twice and see how it goes.
