Bateaux Mouches, The Seine, Bowling, X-ray, Supper.

Denise at My Life in Retirement is doing a series about her whirlwind trip to Europe in 1969. In the one I have linked to, she mentions taking a trip on the River Seine in France. Obviously it made me think of the trip I made around about 1956 or '57 I think, my French boyfriend took me on one of the Bateaux Mouches which plied their trips on the Seine. During the trip I had to go to the bathroom which was on the deck below where we were sitting. For some reason just before I got to the steps going down, I fainted. No idea why to this day. I woke up surrounded by people and right on the edge of this pretty high set of steps. I was so lucky not to have fallen down them. I might not be here writing this blog!!

Eventually I made it to the bathroom and back again. My boyfriend didn't know anything about it as he was some distance from where it happened. A sightseeing trip I will never forget. Unfortunately I don't remember all that much of the trip itself. However, quite a few years later, I really don't remember what year but I was certainly living away from home and not sure I wasn't married to my first husband, my father sailed up the Seine and moored basically right in the middle of Paris. A wonderful spot for sightseeing. I flew over to join them and sailed back to England with them. One thing I do remember was  how dirty the Seine was. But then in those days so were the Thames and Medway, my home rivers as it were. They are now so clean that fish are swimming  their waters.

Went bowling Monday afternoon - no leagues of course. Matt beat me twice, grumble, grumble. Wednesday is the start of the Summer League.

I had meant to go for an X-ray in the morning but then realised the referral I had called for an ultra sound as well for which one has  to make an appointment. So will not be going until the end of the month.

Made Moroccan-Style Stuffed Peppers for Monday night supper - a favourite and pretty easy to do. Having made them in the morning I couldn't remember how to reheat them in the microwave. I didn't want to do them in the oven. Nothing terribly helpful so I ended microwaving on high for a total of 10 minutes and they were warmed right through. Was reminded this morning of a favourite asparagus dish so think I will make them for supper tomorrow.

Crispy Baked Asparagus Fries

1 lb asparagus, trimmed
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, lightly beaten
3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan), grated
salt and pepper to taste
Alternatively used chopped almonds instead of parmesan

1. Dredge the asparagus in the flour, dip them in the egg and then into a mixture of the panko breadcrumbs, parmesan, salt and pepper.

2. Place the asparagus on a wire rack on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 425F oven until golden brown, about 7-13 minutes.

Servings: 2

  1. I didn't mention the couple my friend saw who were having sex on the river. I guess Paris really is the city for lovers.
I fainted once at Cedar Point while I was in the bathroom. I had dehydrated. I was there with my husband and children. I can still remember a woman yelling at me not to fall on the floor cause it was dirty. Like you have a choice when you are fainting. You really need to get that ultra sound done.

    1. Or something Denise.

I think that's funny, telling you not to fall on the floor. How silly.

I have an appointment for May 25th.

  2. Your boyfriend must've been really far away not to have heard the commotion. Glad you didn't fall down the steps.

    1. Yes, they are quite long boats Alex. If I had fallen down them it could have been quite serious I think.

  3. I'm glad they've cleaned up the rivers and fish can now swim there.

Did you ever tell your boyfriend you fainted?

    1. I assume they have cleaned up the Seine Diane, haven't been there in years.

      I don't know, probably.

  5. Ughh...when do I not fall behind:) I need to catch up with Denise's posts also. I almost fainted at a bar I was in and some guy caught me. I have no idea why I was fainting because i didn't have anything alcoholic until that eve and only took 2 sips from a beer. I remember, in Graz, looking into the river and seeing rats swimming. My Opa said you can walk on the water. Heck, in 2009, when my hubby and I were in Burano, Italy (an island near Venice), I saw an old lady dump her garbage in a canal. She looked to be 150 so she was of that time when it seemed aok to dump everything in the water...bleccchhh. You must be so happy that...yuck...asparagus is in season:)

    1. It's odd when one faints for no apparent reason Birgit, I did it a few times as a young woman. Glad someone caught you. A lot of European rivers are filthy and of course if people are still using them as garbage dumps, they are likely to remain so. Countries are trying to clean up their rivers and the oceans, but people with that mindset are difficult to influence.

I am a very happy camper with the asparagus.

  6. Hello Jo, I've always looked food cooked in peppers or peppers cut up and cooked in food. Regardless, one of my all-time favorite veggies.

    1. In that case Stephen have you tried the Italian Sausage Peppers and Onions recipe? It is a favourite of ours. http://henderson-jo.blogspot.ca/search?q=Italian+Sausage+Peppers+and+Onions

  7. I can only remember fainting twice in my life. Once was when I was about nine and had an allergic reaction to penicillin and the other when I simply fainted for no apparent reason. Hit the floor in the kitchen while I was cooking a meal. Quite disconcerting. You were lucky not to have fallen down the stairs, though. Could have been disastrous.

    1. It seems we can faint for no apparent cause Helen which seems very odd. Fainting in the kitchen could be serious too if you were doing anything near the stove.

  8. I've almost fainted but managed to sit down before it happened. Both times were when I saw my kids coming out of surgery.
