Africa, Bowling, Hurricanes,

Thursday morning I received an email suggesting I should go where the wild things are and including details of all kinds of trips. Look at the price of this one. It suddenly hit me that these people who go to Africa to shoot animals have to start off paying this kind of money to get there in the first place and they then pay a small fortune to legally shoot animals (I am not talking poachers here) but people like the dentist who shot Cecil the lion. I then proceeded to think why would anyone, however rich, want to spend all that money just to shoot a beautiful wild animal? What bugs me too, I couldn't even begin to think of getting there for financial reasons and yet they squander all this money to go on a killing spree. I must admit, thinking of the dentist, I didn't know they made that kind of money. I do know, from recent experience, that dentistry is expensive, but.....

Bowling went pretty well today even though I was beaten twice. Matt decided to bowl really well today too. I just hope I can keep this up when we start our league play next Monday. There was one point this afternoon that we were the only people in the alley apart from the owner. Seemed very odd. The Thursday league (which I call The Ladies from Ayr) doesn't start til next week. Sept. 14 which is the birthday of someone I know quite well.

Irma still seems to be heading for Miami or a bit south. I am so glad we are not there any more. It occurred to me that Matt's granddaughter who has been cruising up and down from New Jersey to the Bahamas (I think) must be pleased to be back in the UK right now. Things are really in a mess in that part of  the world with the Texas coast having been devastated and now the Florida coast  about to be ravaged. Nobody has even mentioned the hurricane which has just gone in to Mexico - this was Katia and I haven't really heard much it.

This recipe is from Mushrooms Canada and is well worth taking note of.

Caprese Baked Egg Cups

Butter, for greasing
12 eggs
½ cup button mushrooms, sliced
½ cup cherry tomatoes, sliced into quarters
½ cup bocconcini cheese pearls, cut in half
½ cup fresh chopped basil
Salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Prepare veggies, and grease muffin tins with a generous amount of butter so that egg cups don’t stick. Crack eggs into each muffin cup.

3. Divide veggies evenly among muffin tins, then season with salt and pepper.

4. Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes, until yolks are just set. Cook closer to the 15 minute mark if you like your yolks semi-hard.

5. Serve and enjoy! To re-heat, microwave two at a time for 1 minute.

  1. What made you think they were shooting animals on that trip? My friends went on a three week safari in Africa and only shot pictures with their cameras. Some of the animals were a little too close for my comfort.

    1. I didn't Denise, but I was thinking about the costs involved travelling to Africa and then how much they pay to legally shoot animals. Did you ever see the pictures of the damned fool who got out of the car to get closer to the lions? His family got the pleasure of watching him get killed.

    2. Some woman who lived near me was killed by a rhino just this summer. Not my type of adventure.

    3. I would love to go on a Safari but would certainly try to be sensible Denise, some of these people are just idiots. I have seen it at the local safari park where, despite warnings, they leave their windows down and try to feed the animals.

  2. I couldn't shoot anything.
Irma will wreck havoc on Florida, but she's heading across land and not bouncing up either coast. Good, she'll lose a lot of steam that way.

    1. Nor me Alex.

Yes, once she's over land she will lose steam. Still bad before she gets over land though.

  3. I'm very worried about my friends and the good people of Florida. Ugh. And another storm right behind it too. As for Africa, you couldn't pay me to go there. South Africa is unbelievably dangerous now, esp. for white people. I think trophy hunting is disgusting and a sin. The only shooting I'd be doing is with my Canon camera!!!!! My bosses went to Tanzania & Kenya in 1995. Their pics were beautiful....but like I said, i'd never go.

    1. Me too, JoJo, the islands have been devastated already. I don't think it is that dangerous in SA - I have friends who live there - I think a lot of the reports from there are exaggerated by the press. I do so agree, trophy hunting is disgusting.

  4. I feel guilty killing cockroaches. I could never kill anything warm blooded. I don't get it at all.

  5. My heart goes out to the people who are affected by Irma and any other disaster. I used to bowl on a bowling league (about 30 years ago), and I love to watch the pro bowlers. The Caprese baked egg cups look delicious, Jo!

    1. We certainly have lots of disasters happening right now Linda. Trouble is, for me, most of the pro bowlers are 10 pin although you do occasionally see five pin.

  6. I plan on going on a safari...African Lion Safari:) I wanted to go last weekend but..ya know... it makes me sick when people go to shoot animals just for the thrill. I would love it if they were in the body of an animal with still their mind and watch as they have. Gun pointed at them. This sounds like a great Twilight Zone episode. Even going there on Safari is dangerous because people can get too close to these wild animals and end up dead. On a better note, glad to hear you are having fun with bowling.

    1. Used to love going to the African Lion Safari Birgit. Then Matt worked there for a while on security. Haven't been in a long while now. Enjoy your visit. I like your plan for the trophy hunters. As for people getting close to the animals, they seem to be just plain stupid. Don't they realise that to these animals they are food or enemies?

    1. I do and I don't. I tend to get a bit jealous of their prowess.
