Shot Rhinos, San Andreas Fault,Trump, Chair,

I knew this was going to happen. A French Zoo has been broken into and three 4 yr old rhinos have been shot and their horns taken. Rhino horn is worth so much money and people just don't seem to give a damn about the animals. I emailed our local safari park and warned them but I wonder if they have taken any more precautions. Matt worked security there for a time a few years ago (part time) and from what he said, I think getting at the rhinos and elephants would not be difficult. A lot of people said it wouldn't happen. They were wrong. There is a video at the link above.  It makes me cry.

News out today about the San Andreas fault off the California coast. Scientists say that the fault is overdue for a major quake. The fault has a quake every 100 years and it is now 160 years since the last one. I know when I visited in 1988 I was scared, everyone said it was going to happen. I don't think anyone really believes it will. I guess they won't believe it right up until it happens.

Then you have Trump. I don't believe all the things he keeps saying, or tweeting, none of which appear to have any evidence to support the accusations he makes.  I am so glad I live in Canada.

The chair men come today and I went to the bank and got some cash. Decided against handing over my first born child, not that I have one anyway.

I think I might try this in the near future. Sounds pretty good to me. There might be an anomaly here, in the UK slivered almonds are what North Americans call sliced almonds. I am not too sure which is meant here. I would certainly use sliced myself I think.

Baked Apples With Honey and Slivered Almonds

4 large sweet tart baking apples (I used Honey Crisp, my favorite!)
1 oz slivered almonds
2 1/2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup  honey

1. Wash apples.  Cut each in half and core with a melon baller.

2. Place halved apples in ungreased 9" x 9" x 2" baking dish.

3. Place 1/2 teaspoons of butter in the center of each half.

4. Top each half with slivered almonds. Drizzle with honey.

5. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes or until flesh of apple is tender when pierced with a fork.

6. Transfer to serving plate and pour honey from baking dish over.  Serve warm or cold for a delicious dessert or snack.

Servings: 8

  1. Hi Jo - the rhino is terrible. Where are we going. The whole of that west coast will at some stage have some enormous earthquakes and thus tidal waves ... it's a bit like the sink holes in Florida ...

I'd wait for the apple season to start and use a Bramley Apple - a true cooker ... but I'm so aware of seasonal cooking. Does sound delicious though ...

    Cheers Hilary

    1. You are right, it is terrible Hilary. I agree that they will have some enormous quakes etc. the sinkholes are not confined to Florida though.

We don't get Bramleys in this part of the world unfortunately.

I am convinced you are right.

  3. I lived in California most of my life. Earthquakes don't scare me, but could never live some place where there were tornadoes.

    1. I think a really massive earthquake, which is what they are expecting, would scare you to death Betty. Assuming you were alive to be scared that much. No, not too keen on tornadoes either

  4. First the hippo being beaten to death and now three rhinos. Sad.

    1. I hadn't heard about the hippo Alex. What on earth is the matter with these idiots. The love of money etc.

  5. These men who did this to the rhinos should be shot and killed and then one of their appendages taken! I am sickened and disgusted by this and, obviously, very, very angry. I also believe one needs to educate the Chinese people that rhino horns and any other animal part will not help their libido or whatever else ails them. If the people leave these horrible remedies behind, then no one would go after these beasts. Speaking of beasts, the orange one in the office wants his thirst for power quenched but there is no way to satisfy it. Let's hope he will be impeached because he is caught in lies, unfounded accusations and he gets away with it plus people defend him...I shake my head. These baked apples remind me when we used to put cinnamon in an apple and bake it in the fire.

    1. Remove the appendage before you shoot them Birgit. The trouble is, there is such a lot of money involved. You are right, the Asians really need to be educated. The orange beast? I like it.

  6. Honey Crisps are yummy. Love apples. And almonds. Silvered, sliced, chopped, shredded, crushed, blitzed or otherwise. It's all good.

  7. Wow. I'm just speechless over those poor rhinos. Does the zoo not have night time security? Even our little zoo here has a night time security patrol that keeps watch over everything. That's some very precious cargo in there.

I love honey crisps. My favorite apple, too. Thanks for showing me how to make them unhealthy. I look forward to exploiting this ASAP.

    1. Me too Bryan. One would imagine they would have security at night but, if so, obviously not enough. As I said, they have nighttime security at our local safari park but I somehow doubt it is 100% safe.

Not that unhealthy, just a little butter, nothing wrong with honey and almonds.

  8. That is so terrible about the rhinos. I guess the people living on the west coast don't mind taking their chances. I love baked apples.

    1. It is terrible Susan. In my opinion, anyone living in a dangerous area such as California or next to a volcano is nuts.

      Hope you try these.

  9. I lived in the Bay Area for 10 years and experienced the 1989 SF quake after living there only a couple of months. You just learn to live with it and hope for the best...have a plan, water & canned food on hand, batteries, battery operated radio and an 'earthquake bag' of essentials.

    1. That's OK if you can get out JoJo. We had essentials handy for hurricanes in NC. But if you are trapped and/or if it floods where you are. I have a cousin who lives on the outskirts. He has been thrown out of bed several times. But......

  10. Shocking to hear about the rhino. I felt like crying when I read it. How people can be so stupid as to believe that a piece of keratin can be a medicine I can't imagine. They may as well use fingernail clippings. They're made of the same substance after all.

To judge by the photo the almonds are what we call flaked almonds here and the apples do sound delicious.

    1. Me too Helen but all the time it is so valuable, these things are going to happen. Maybe we should collect fingernail clippings and sell them LOL.

Funny, flaked, slivered, sliced. Why can't we all use the same word.

  11. Regarding the San Andreas fault... I'd be more worried about New Zealand. That place has mud boiling on the side of the road leading into the capital. It's a definite worry. I reckon it's ready to blow. I hope not for the sake of New Zealanders.

    1. Nasty, I didn't know that Pinky. Judging from all the programmes I have been seeing in the last few months, there are one hell of a lot of places waiting to blow.
