Waste, Bowling, Falling, Bed Bugs. Asparagus and Berries

I am not the greatest conserver of anything, but I hate to see blatant waste. Wednesday I received a brochure from our bank which looked as though it would have been pretty expensive to produce. It consisted of 5 pages all about banking on line and telling me how good it was. The only thing, I have been banking on line for years. What a waste of paper, money and time. Not so wasteful, but I received a phone call from my Cable company the other day offering me a whole range of services - I informed the caller that I already had all these services. This to me is a waste of time and probably money. Why don't they check?

Well, it's Thursday again. Of course I bowled quite well. I was asking if anyone knew a hypnotist - I need one to convince me Wednesday is Thursday when I am bowling.

As you may remember I am attending some seminars on Stand Up to Falls. Meanwhile all around me my friends are falling and ending up in hospital. Turns out today one friend who fell twice, has been running around for 2 weeks with a broken ankle. She was even bowling with it. OK, she didn't know it was broken, but I cannot figure out why she didn't go to the emergency dept. straight away. She said she was in agony bowling on Wednesday, I bet she was. One senior every 10 minutes ends up in hospital due to falling.  It is quite scary now that I know the stats especially when I know three people who have ended up in hospital in the last two or three weeks. Even if the last one was only to get a cast and come home. Be a while before she can bowl and presumably she won't be able to drive either.

Meanwhile other seniors seem to be having to cope with bed bugs again. Trouble is, I am getting
bitten but can't find the little suckers. Everyone at the landlord's and the pest control continue to ignore me so maybe I should do what has been suggested and go to the papers. Perhaps I should warn all concerned before I do so, what do you think? Might surprise you to know that I am fed up to the back teeth. I thought we had got rid of them but it appears that we haven't  Admittedly I haven't been bitten for a few weeks now but that seems to have changed. I have been trying to figure out how they are getting to me as I thought, mistakenly obviously, that I had the bed well protected.

Went to Barrie's Asparagus Farm to stock up on my asparagus and also got some strawberries which we had for supper. I have never seen strawberries which had not developed at the ends and were a hard black knot of seeds. I had to cut these out as well as hull them. Wasn't too pleased, but they tasted good in the end. I also bought myself extra asparagus with a view to freezing it. Last year I blanched the spears before freezing. Talking to the girl at the farm I told her I had read you could just freeze it without blanching and she said they always recommended that method but to make sure they are totally dry. When I got home, I shoved a couple of spears in the freezer and will see what they are like in a couple of days.

Roasted Asparagus with Garlic-Lemon Sauce

2 bunches asparagus (about 2 pounds), trimmed
2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1/8 tsp salt
2 Tbs low-fat mayonnaise
2 Tbs shredded Parmesan cheese
2 Tbs water
2 anchovy fillets, minced
1 small clove garlic, minced
1 Tbs lemon juice
2 chopped hard-boiled eggs (optional; see Tip)

1. Preheat oven to 425°F.

2. Toss asparagus with oil and salt in a large bowl. Spread on a baking sheet and roast, stirring once halfway through, until tender, 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Combine mayonnaise, Parmesan, water, anchovies, garlic and lemon juice in a small bowl. To serve, drizzle the asparagus with the sauce and top with hard-boiled egg (if using).

Servings: 4

Tips
Tip: To hard-boil eggs, place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and cook at the barest simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, pour out hot water and cover the eggs with cold water. Let stand until cool enough to handle before peeling. I always refresh the water several times and if in a hurry, add ice to the water.

Have a great day

  1. Rotten luck about the bed bugs. I was wondering if there are any others in your building still having trouble. If there are a joint approach to the realtors and pest control people might work - and a joint warning that you intend going to the media or papers might have more effect than just you and Matt complaining.

    1. I don't know Helen and they won't tell us. They keep it quiet as much as possible. I do agree, a joint approach would be best but not much we can do about that.

  2. Hi Jo - I think you need to do something re the bed bugs - good luck, but it needs to be dealt with. I'm catching the last of the asparagus - a week to go ... the season has done me well.

Take care and all the best - Hilary

    1. Something Hilary, but what? July 1 is usually our asparagus cut off date. However, it may be later this year because we started late.

    1. I don't know Diane, I was just discussing that with Matt. I can probably find out through my blogs.

    2. I first wrote about them on January 22 Diane.

  4. 6 months and still no good resolution to those evil bugs. I would definitely go to the paper about it, since the landlords won't help. Or you should see if the pest control company has a facebook page and blast them on that. I've gotten way faster results making a public complaint on FB than trying to call.

I agree with you about the wasteful crap you get in the mail. I got a letter from my health insurance company telling me I was renewed and it was filled with extraneous papers and even a voter registration form.

    1. Good idea about FB JoJo, but although they have a page, they don't have a comment form. I have left a message but I will probably get the same response as before. Zilch. They feel as I am not paying their hire, they don't have to take any notice of me. There is a web page which I have looked at before where there are numerous complaints. First and foremost, the landlords should be responsible though. They too are ignoring me.

Stupid isn't it? Think of all the trees which could be saved.

  5. It is amazing how much "junk mail" we get with ads about this and that; it all goes into recycling, but it does sound like a lot of waste of time and money in some efforts, like that fancy thing you got from the bank.

It is a shame you are still dealing with the bedbugs and that management is not helping out more. I agree, might be good to take it up a step and see if organizing among neighbors who might be dealing with the problem or going to the papers, etc. might be the next best thing to do.

    1. I don't know if anyone else is having the problem Betty. The landlords won't tell us that is for certain. I finally had a response from them which was basically telling me to check my imagination!!!!

  6. The silly thing is, why would you be making it up? Why would you say you were still being bitten if you weren't? They sound like they want to ignore you and hope the problem will just disappear. I feel for you I really do, Jo.

    1. I think they feel that as some people can psyche themselves into bug reactions, that maybe I am one Pinky. At least the pest guy finding one validated my claims even if I was shocked that he did find one at all. Thanks Pinky.

  7. How many people are affected by the bedbugs in your building? I wonder if a petition should be started so the owners get off their duffs and do something more than just send these exterminators over. This is not good enough

    1. I don't know Birgit. They keep it very quiet. The guy across from us has been moved to an old folks home by his kids. One other woman on our corridor, don't see very often, but she said she was clear last time I saw her, a while back.

  8. The amount of money, time and ink that goes into making those pamplets, just doesn't make sense to me. Not sure why the cable people don't check either. More waste. And for what?

Wow, since 22/Jan on the bed bugs, that's nuts. I don't know what I would do. That is a tough one. They do need to listen. Very frusrated for you, over this mess.

When I freeze mine, I wash them, dry really, really well and then place them on a baker's/cookie sheet. Once they are solid, I place them in bags. No sticking. I do this with every fruit and veg that I freeze.

    For me, I never blanch.

    1. It is a waste isn't it Ivy?

Well, as you now know, they have reacted about the bugs.

That's how I have now frozen my asparagus. I froze two spears and then tried cooking/eating and they weren't bad.

    2. Very cool. I'm now working through my frozen banana pieces because they make for good ice cream.

    3. Haven't made it in years Ivy but used to blend frozen bananas and chocolate powder. Delicious.
