Windows 10, Bowling Shoes,

I wasn't expecting to have time to write a blog this evening as I was messing with Windows 10 which I am now entitled to download onto my laptop. Not on my desktop oddly enough. Anyway, I have spent a long time backing up programmes and files which I would hate to lose. The trouble with my laptop is that I am running a number of older programmes which are not supported any more but which do things I haven't found elsewhere such as Address Book which keeps one's addresses, prints labels and keeps track of Christmas Cards sent and received over the years. Does other things but I don't use those much if at all. I have not been able to find another programme that will keep track of cards although there are lots of address ones out there. Another is an old cookery book system which still has recipes on it which I occasionally refer to although most of the time my recipes are on Living Cookbook which I have on both machines so am not too worried about. I was going to schedule the download for 11 p.m. but then decided to leave it til the weekend just in case..... I am still a bit leery of the upgrade, but I do want to be up to date.

Our bowling was absolutely dreadful today, Thursday, neither of us could do anything much. Maybe

it's because the League was over on Wednesday and none of it matters that much any more. I also decided to order some new bowling shoes as the ones I presently have slip up and down a I walk. A pain in the .. feet. They are pretty expensive things to buy these days. The odd thing is that the shoes Matt bought around 35 years ago are still fine although the pair I bought, exactly the same except for colour, fell apart some years ago. The pair I have now fasten with a velcro strap and this is part of the problem, I can't get them tight enough any more, to stop slipping. This shoe is almost exactly the same as I have ordered. I don't remember if they had blue laces but certainly blue inside. They should be here by the middle of next week hopefully.

Okra isn't something we eat a lot of although I do like to make gumbo now and again when I come across some really fresh okra. This looked good too. The first time we ever ate okra was in the Mediterranean and it was in a tomato based sauce. My mother figured out how to copy this and we had it several times over the years. These days I'm afraid I cannot remember what she did.

Crunchy Baked Okra

Crunchy Baked Okra
My sister prepared these for Father’s day, and they were SO GOOD!!  They taste like fried okra, just less greasy.

I like okra for many reasons.

I like the way it tastes, it is packed with vitamin A, B, C, and K, its antioxidant properties, fiber, folates, iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, and more.  It is also said that okra helps reduce cancer.
If you live in the South, you are probably familiar with this appetizer.  The okra is usually dipped in buttermilk, deep fried, and then showered with salt.  But, I made it healthy for the consumption of my family (not drenched in oil, no cholesterol, not covered in salt, etc).

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 cup fat free buttermilk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 lb fresh okra pods, trimmed and cut into 3/4 inch slices
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
2. Combine cornmeal, panko bread crumbs, 1/2 tsp salt, black pepper, and red pepper in a shallow dish; set aside.
3. Combine buttermilk and egg in a large bowl; stir with a whisk
4. Add okra to buttermilk mixture; toss to coat. Let stand 3 minutes.
5. Dredge okra in cornmeal/crumb mixture.
6. Place okra in a jelly roll pan coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle remaining salt over the okra.
7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, stirring once, until okra is golden brown and crispy

Have a great day

  1. I'm afraid to download Windows 10. I don't even like rebooting my computer when there are updates. My desktop is so old it has no modem and nowhere to plug in a flash drive. I'm not even sure what Windows version is on it, but if I had to guess, it was bought in 2001 or 2002.

I've never had okra. Or collards.

    1. Well if your computer is that old, I guess you should forget it JoJo. Or at least get some professional advice.

I like both okra and collards.

  2. Getting used to Windows 10 but have yet to sit here and read the online guide. Maybe I'll do that Sunday when the temp outside hits 90.

    1. Haven't downloaded it yet Denise, still making preparations just in case. I think our temps are going to be that high at the weekend too. Yuk

  3. That's the bummer thing about updates - older programs and files often aren't supported.
Sorry about the crappy bowling day.

    1. It SAYS everything is compatible, but...... Have you got it yet Alex?

Thanks. It didn't really matter I guess it wasn't league play.

  4. A scary prospect, the new upgrade, but we don't really have a choice do we?
I wear a larger walking shoe and always two pairs of socks. One thin and the other a bit thicker, would that work until you can replace them?
    Have a great weekend!

    1. It is, you are right Yolanda.

Not a bad idea with the socks, but I won't have to worry too much as it appears I should have the shoes in time for next week's bowling.

  5. My nephew said wait on doing the Windows 10 upgrade until they get the bugs worked out. I'm all for that idea since my pc is just 1.5 yr. old with Windows 8.1 running just fine. I did reserve my upgrade but you have a year before that will expire as a freebie. I've only had okra at a restaurant and that was good, like this recipe sounds too.

    1. Your nephew could well be right dynnamae. My systems are somewhat older than that.

I used not to like okra very much but it has "grown" on me.

  6. There are new houses being built in our neighborhood. Cox was out on Wednesday installing phone/cable/internet. My router had to be reset. While I was talking to the tech at Cox, we were talking about Windows 10. (I have not upgraded yet.) He said at this point they do not support it as there are too many bugs still in the system. So, I will wait for a bit before I upgrade.
I do like okra. I like the idea of oven frying it. I oven fry eggplant and prefer it that way.

    1. My bunch appear to be supporting it Maggie. One can choose to delay it up to a year I understand.

Never had eggplant that way. Eggplant sucks up oil like a sponge.

  8. A suggestion for Windows 10 (besides forget it and install Linux): there's a choice in the install to either upgrade or create an installation disk. Before you do the upgrade, create the installation disk. That way, if the upgrade doesn't work (as mine didn't), you can do a clean install from the installation disk. Also, you can upgrade your other machine from the installation disk.

  9. Ick-not looking to the newer version and will make sure to have everything saved somewhere. Sorry about the bowling but there will be better days and hopefully better shoes

    1. Saving is an excellent idea Birgit. I have now downloaded 10 onto my laptop and everything seems to be OK and working properly

  10. Scotto is my tech person. He said to expect a lot of patches in the early days. I don't know what patches are but expect them anyway. I'll be installing it sooner or later.

    1. At the moment it seems fine Pinky, in fact a few things seem to have speeded up. It's got some interesting things on the new start menu.
