Rabbiting On, Fireworks.

Matt actually had two pretty good games at bowling on Thursday, the first game wasn't much good, but he made up for it afterwards. Meanwhile I didn't bowl so good. It really is an up and down game. You can knock 'em dead one minute and fall flat on your rear end the next. Would you guess our bowling days are our two favourite days of the week? If we could afford it I think we would bowl most days although I would miss my exercise classes which are fun and where I get to chat with friends who live in the same building. Most of the are a lot older than me which makes me feel good.

I started using a different Avon cream this morning which is supposed to be a new and extra good cream for sun tan protection plus moisturizing and reducing wrinkles. I got Matt to take a picture of my face so I can see if it is doing anything in a week or two. The close ups he took are absolutely horrid. I was quite sure I didn't have that many wrinkles, was I wrong. I guess when I look in the mirror I am wearing rose coloured glasses or something. Quite a shock. Mind you when people say I don't look my age, how old do people my age look? And no, I am not sharing the pictures with you. The one on this page is quite good enough LOL. It is relatively recent.

Several bloggers have been complaining about fireworks lately. In the news today there are stories of at least two top athletes who have damaged their hands so badly with fireworks that they may not be able to fulfill their contracts. Don't people know how dangerous they are apart from the nuisance factor? I remember many years ago, in England, a guy who was in charge of letting of fireworks at the yacht club, ended up being chased by a rocket. We all though it was funny at the time, but if it had hit him, he could have been badly injured.

This is a unusual recipe which appealed to me. It says for 24 but I am thinking the recipe can be suitably reduced. The marinade wouldn't need to be reduced of course.

Pepper Steaks in Wonton Cups

Serves: 24

Ingredients

Marinade:
  • 4 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoon sherry
  • 2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
    Wonton Cups
    • 24 wonton wrappers
    • Salt to taste
    • cooking spray
    • olive oil
      Pepper Beef:
      • 2 pounds (16 ounces) sirloin steak, sliced
      • 2 ½ tablespoons grapeseed oil
      • 2 clove garlic, minced
      • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger)
      • 1 green bell pepper, deseeded and cut into pieces
      • 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into pieces
      • ½ onion, sliced
      • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
      • chopped green onions for garnish

      Instructions
      1. Place all the marinade ingredients in a large zipped top plastic bag. Add the steak and marinate about 8 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
      2. To make the wonton cups, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray two muffin tin pans with cooking spray. Brush each side of the wonton wrappers with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt. Place one wonton wrapper in each muffin tin. Each wrapper will overlap itself in the muffin tin and stick out over the top. Bake in a preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
      3. To make the pepper steak, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a skillet or wok over medium high heat.
      4. Stir-fry the steak until is brown on the outside but pink on the inside. Remove and set aside.
      5. Heat the remaining oil in a wok or skillet over medium high heat. Cook the garlic and the ginger for about a minute, and then add the green bell pepper, red bell pepper, onion, and black pepper. Stir-fry for about 5 minutes until the onions are translucent and both onions and peppers are softened.
      6. Transfer the steak back into the wok or skillet. Stir-fry until the steak is cooked through and the center of the meat is no longer pink, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately with steamed rice.

      Have a great day

      1. I've given up looking in mirrors - way too scary! Your recipe looks delicious.

      2. Australia banned fireworks except for professionally organised events many years ago because of the injuries. The bonfires we used to have for Guy Fawkes Night also disappeared and, although we missed the social aspects, fires here in November aren't a very wise thing so it was a sensible decision. I hope your bowling improves. It might get very frustrating otherwise.

        1. Australia is very sensible Helen. I believe there are places that have banned them over here, but obviously, according to the news reports, not very many. As far as I know Guy Fawkes night is still celebrated in the UK although when we left, fireworks were way too expensive for most people.

It will improve I think. Comes and goes. Stupid game LOL.

      3. I am sure they are not wrinkles but just lines from shadows and poor lighting. I was interviewed on the radio on Wednesday by a station in Port Huron, MI. They listen to not only Michigan's idiots, but Sarnia, Ont. also does a show and has folks setting them off.

        1. I hope you are right Denise. It is incredible what fools people are with fireworks. I assume you were interviewed about fireworks.

      4. I suppose you saw the story of the guy that died when he tried to shoot one off his head in a mortar tube? They didn't come right out and say it, but it sounded like a pretty gruesome way to go and witness. I assumed it was the concussion of it that killed him but his brother said there was no way to save him because there was nothing left. Ew.

        1. I heard the story vaguely, didn't know any details or that he was dead JoJo. I bet it was gruesome to witness. Yuk.

      5. That Giants receiver was an idiot. You need your fingers and hands to catch balls, dude.

      6. I like that recipe with the pepper steaks; might make it this weekend. You would think professional athletes or adults in general would realize that they might be out of their element when around fireworks. Your bowling adventures are fun to read about.

        1. Thanks Betty. Yes, true, you would think they would be more careful.

          Glad you enjoy them.

      7. With California being tinder dry, fireworks are supposedly limited to professional event. They are not even sold here. Somehow there are always a few idiots who sneak them in.

      8. Fireworks are fun to watch, but I'd never want to handle one. Folks are, well, stupid, sometimes. It's a shame you can't bowl everyday. As for mirrors, or photographs, I hate them both, but folks tell me all the time 'you look younger' I can credit good genes, but the calendar doesn't care about the genes! :)

        1. Used to handle sparklers as kids, and one 4th, when we lived in NC I helped but was horrified a friend was letting her young son light them.

You are right Yolanda, the calendar certainly ignores such things.

      9. Maybe if the stupid sports guys get in the news they can no longer play because of these fireworks, something positive will happen. Never get an up close photo-they are never nice unless it is an old time photographer from the 30's. Even then they put vaseline on the lens to smooth out the wrinkles of the stars. The meal sounds really good and glad you are enjoying bowling

        1. I hope so Birgit. Really and truly it should be left to the professionals as it once was. Yes, I will never get such a close up again, frightened me to death LOL.

Yes, we do enjoy bowling, never did it til we came to Canada, well of course, only Canada has 5 pin.

      10. Occasionally I've accidentally looked at myself looking down into my mobile phone camera. Oh. My. Gawd! Horrid! Everything falls forward and I look like a lizard person. I bet you have English Rose skin Jo.

      11. Fireworks let off specifically at a designated place and time is acceptable. But despite being banned inconsiderate elements let them off in the neighborhood. This triggered off wailing of babies immediately. A pity! Perhaps bowling in an enclosed hall is the answer. Would love it if the Mrs can try your recipes! Thanks Jo!

      12. Wailing of babies is bad Hank, but terrifying animals is worse in my opinion.

We love bowling as you can tell. I hope your Mrs. will try them.

      13. Hi Jo. Seeing your post makes me want to hurry out for some lunch! Yum! Private fireworks are banned in no-fun Oz. I can remember having a cracker of a time as a kid. Now it's all super dupa professional fireworks and lots of them.

Let me know if that wrinkle cream works!

        Denise :-)

        1. I think Oz is very sensible when you hear about all the accidents. They are bloody dangerous.

OK I will Denise, not sure how long I should give it? A month maybe?

      14. I've never liked the noise of fireworks. As a kid, or an adult. It's great that you enjoy bowling so much. And very cool that you get to exercise in your building.

It is cool being able to exercise downstairs. Makes it more certain I/we will go.

        3. I have a treadmill Ivy but don't use it that often. I find keeping it siliconed is a damn nuisance especially for a couple of oldies like us.
