Saturday Recipe

I wasn’t going to post a recipe this weekend, but I picked this up from a friend on Facebook and bearing in mind the awful weather we have been having I though it would be ideal for us in Canada anyway.

Red Wine Hot Chocolate
Source, Robin Shreeves

Ingredientsred-wine-hot-chocolate
  • 1/3 cup dry red wine (I used Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp organic, unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tbsp simple syrup
  • pinch Kosher salt
  • 2/3 cup 1 percent organic milk (You can use any kind of milk you want. I always use 1 percent.)
Directions
  1. Combine red wine and cocoa powder in a heavy bottom pan over medium heat. Stir until well combined.
  2. Add simple syrup and kosher salt. Increase heat and bring to a boil while stirring.
  3. Reduce heat back to medium. Add milk, a little at a time, stirring constantly.
  4. Heat through, pour into a mug and serve.
My notes
  • I use simple syrup instead of sugar in my hot chocolate so it doesn’t get grainy. If you’re going to use straight sugar instead of simple syrup, reduce it to two tablespoons. If it’s not sweet enough, you can add some more, but start with two tablespoons.
  • It’s important to add the milk a little at a time and stir constantly. If you dump it in all at once, the milk could curdle.
  • If I were going to top this with whipped cream, I’d make fresh chocolate whipped cream.
  • I’m really curious what this would taste like with cinnamon simple syrup.
Have a great weekend

  1. Hi Jo - I'm sure it's good ... just prefer my things separately ... I'll have the red wine and I'll have some hot chocolate. Still I made the most wonderful mixes of recipes - yet some things I prefer as they were intended to be ...

Hope you're feeling better, as too Matt .. cheers Hilary

    1. I don't like hot chocolate normally Hils, but I might try this recipe.

Actually last night my leg was hurting worse than it has all week. Matt is improving slightly each day I think.

  2. I can drink Swiss Miss and the other commercially sold hot cocoas but not pure cocoa. I usually just add a splash of kahlua and some vanilla flavoured coffeemate.

    1. Now I like the idea of kahlua in hot chocolate. I did think of brandy or rum.

  4. You're no fun Dixie LOL. Like I said, I don't normally like hot chocolate, but I might like this. Especially now when it's so damned cold here.

  5. This sounds superb, Jo. I'll have to keep it til winter, though, as Australia is still in heatwave conditions. Nice cool gin and tonics make my 'end of day'.

    Happy New Year!

    Denise :-)

    1. Matt would join you with the G & T's. I'm a Scotch drinker. I don't envy you the amount of heat you've got right now.
