Bowling, Downton.

I went bowling on Monday, Matt did not. There’s nothing wrong with Five pin valueshim (according to the doc in the hospital) but he is still in major pain and the pills she gave him aren’t doing a damned thing. Hopefully we can get to see the family doc tomorrow and get some further explanation or something. I didn’t drive myself mind you, a friend took me. I had a lousy first game, think I was scared I would hurt myself, but when I realised I was OK my game improved somewhat. I don’t suppose for one moment Matt will be bowling Thursday either and I certainly won’t bowl alone. Not sure about my exercise classes, maybe I will turn up and just do what I can.

Sunday I watched Downton Abbey, the first of the new season. Much to my surprise Matt decided to watch it toDownton Abbeyo and stayed with it. I didn’t think he would. Apparently a friend has the whole set of recorded episodes and is going to bring them for me next week when we bowl. I hope Matt will enjoy seeing them all. There was a very good short programme after explaining how they were using an Edwardian expert to ensure that everything they did on the show was correct for the period. Several of the things they explained we had never heard of before. He explained the importance of manners at that time and why it was so important.

I really like Chicken Noodle soup although Matt is not too keen. When I saw this from MyRecipes I thought it looked pretty easy. Of course you have to have the cooked chicken on hand which I don’t at the moment, but otherwise…

Quick Chicken Noodle Soup

Full of down-home flavour, this classic soup can be on your table in 20 minutes or less.
  • Yield: 6 servings (serving size: about 1 cup)
Ingredients
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 none (32-ounce) carton fat-free, lower-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup prechopped onion
  • 1/2 cup prechopped celery
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 none medium carrot, chopped
  • 6 ounces fusilli pasta
  • 2 1/2 cups shredded skinless, boneless rotisserie chicken breast
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
Preparation
1. Combine 2 cups water and chicken broth in a microwave-safe dish, and microwave at HIGH for 5 minutes.
2. While broth mixture heats, heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add onion, celery, salt, pepper, and carrot; sauté 3 minutes or until almost tender, stirring frequently. Add hot broth mixture and pasta; bring to a boil. Cook 7 minutes or until pasta is almost al dente. Stir in chicken; cook 1 minute or until thoroughly heated. Stir in parsley.

Have a great day

  1. Hi Jo - I was sorry to read about Matt .. but sincerely hope he improves soon. Glad you were able to get out and bowl ... Downton - there's a talk I'm going to at the end of January by the chap who is a historical advisor for Downton and for the King's Speech - should be an interesting talk ..

Chicken noodle - always good for the soul .. cheers Hilary

    1. Lucky you, saw a bit about him after the programme. If he is the guy who advised for the Queen's Speech, ask him, if you can, about using the word Loo when Lionel came out of the bathroom. Definitely out of period. I certainly found the programme about him extremely interesting.

      Yup, love chicken noodle.

  2. Watched Downton too and was appalled at the behaviour of the young teacher at dinner. Were they trying to show that the working class had absolutely no manners or is it just me?

    1. Aggressive behavior toward the upper classes. Think maybe they were trying to show how some people felt and to emphasise the differences. Maybe. Also I think that's her character. She certainly livened up dinner.

  3. I hope Matt feels better soon!!!! So many of my friends are into Downton but I've never seen it. I feel like at this point I'd never catch up. I don't have Netflix. Try as I might, I have never really been able to get into British shows (except The Young Ones). Russell & I have been making chicken soup lately, except we boil the already cooked rotisserie chicken for the broth. Then he cuts out all the bones and skin and returns it to the broth along w/ the veggies I've cut up. No noodles though, we use potatoes instead.

    1. Thanks, taking him to family doc this aft. I love Downton but then I am English by birth.

I boil an uncooked chicken and then pull off all the flesh to make stock.

  4. Glad to hear your doing much better, but sorry Matt isn't. Hopefully the doc will solve the issues. Kind of getting tired of Downton, but I don't have a real long attention span for some shows. I did watch the show after and found it interesting. I'll probably watch the season, because what other choices are there - reality housewives, apprentices, bachelors and fake monster hunters! UGH!

    1. Finally got it sorted with Matt. Writing about it for tomorrow. I do know what you mean about TV but I enjoy Downton.

  5. Hope they find out soon what to do to help Matt. Downton was interesting to watch as we try and guess what will happen to whom. Other than Turner Classic Movies to watch here, Doc Martin on DVD, which we received as a Christmas gift, a few cooking shows, Antiques Road show, and NOVA, that is about it. My husband watches American football, but I cannot stay with a whole game.

    1. Having been in the hospital all day, we now have an answer. I watch very little TV, Matt does watch a bit more than I do.

  6. If you're going to watch a series, binge-watching it all together is the way to go.
Hope your doctor figures out what is wrong with Matt.

  7. I've tried to watch Downton Abbey but I just can't get into it. Do you remember a British show called Upstairs Downstairs? I was addicted to it. I liked The House of Eliott too which was set about the same time. Hope Matt improves soon.
