Movie, Bowling.

I was so buDestination Tokyosy watching a war movie called Destination Tokyo with Cary Grant in the lead, I didn’t get time to write this blog. It’s an excellent movie, very gripping, and really worth watching. It was apparently made in 1944, in other words, during the war. If you ever get the chance to see it, I can recommend it. A somewhat unusual role for Cary Grant. I never think of him in serious roles at all. He did a good job on this one.

Bowling today was only fair I’m afraid. Next week we have our Christmas lunch and then the league doesn’t bowl til the New Year. Then we will have to really pull up our socks. Our team was in the lead but we have lost it at the moment so need to get it back again.

I thought these looked absolutely scrumptious. From Web MD Food & Recipes

Golden Turmeric Latkes With Applesauce
These crispy-on-the-outside-and-tender-on-the-inside latkes are delicious paired with a subtly spicy clove-scented applesauce.
Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups russet potatoes, shredded peeled
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1-2  fresh green serrano chiles, stemmed and finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves and tender stems, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup chickpea flour, or unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil, divided
Instructions
  1. To prepare sauce: Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add ginger and cook, stirring, until light brown and aromatic, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir in turmeric and cloves. Cook until the spices are fragrant, 30 seconds to 1 minute more. Scrape the spices into the applesauce in a small bowl and stir well to combine.
  2. Preheat oven to 200°F. Place a baking sheet in the oven.
  3. To prepare latkes: Thoroughly mix potatoes, onion, chiles to taste, cilantro, flour, cumin, salt, turmeric and eggs in a large bowl.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place a heaping tablespoon of the potato mixture in the skillet and flatten with a spatula into a disk roughly 3 inches in diameter. Form as many latkes as you can in the pan without overcrowding. Cook until golden brown and crispy on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until the other side is golden brown and crispy, 3 to 5 minutes. Briefly drain on a paper towel-lined plate, then transfer to the oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining oil and potato mixture.
  5. Serve the latkes with the seasoned applesauce.

  1. Never heard of Destination Tokyo. I'll be checking it out. What are your cooking plans for Christmas and New Year?

    1. Nothing particular Vanessa. I usually cook a turkey breast for Matt and I on Christmas Day followed by Christmas Pudding and Rum Butter sauce, and for us Dec. 26 is Boxing Day when I usually cook Pork, not sure about this year yet, we have a dinner guest so I have to check at the meat market. New Year, I never cook anything special anyway unless I am having a party and I don't do that any more.

  2. My husband loves war movies so he probably turned this one on at some point, although his preferred actor is John Wayne. I haven't had a potato latke in years. I had no idea there was such a thing as chickpea flour!

    1. Neither of us had heard of this movie before, it was very good.

They can make flour out of anything JoJo.

    1. I knew it was Hanukkah but didn't connect the two even though I have received several recipes for latkes today.

  4. That looks like an interesting potato dish. My kids have requested a potato bake on Christmas day which is basically just sliced potatoes baked in cream, cheese and garlic. They love it. We'll be having tiger prawns, cold ham, turkey and chicken by the pool on Christmas Day. Probably an nontraditional icecream and trifle instead of pudding.

    1. That sounds good Pinky, not unlike a dish we do here except no garlic I don't think. Scalloped Potatoes. Yum, tiger prawns. By the pool even, I will have to see if I can get a plane ticket in time.

    1. It;s not quite the Cary Grant we are familiar with. Very much more serious part.

I guess we will soon. I did have one good game. They do look good don't they?

    1. We get sandwiches made by the owners' wives (very good) and various sweets afterwards. It's always very enjoyable. Last year they served a lot.
