Oktoberfest, Movie,

I saw a headline which said that Oktoberfest was over, I assumed in DirndlMunich. Ours hasn’t even started yet. It starts on Friday with the “tapping of the keg” and goes on for a full week. It is, I am told, the second biggest Oktoberfest and during the week you will see men in their lederhosen and women in their dirndles. Both very expensive items tlederhoseno purchase I understand. I used to have a dirndl skirt when I was a teenager in the UK. I loved it, but I didn’t realise at the time it was part of a costume. I didn’t have any more of the traditional garb than the skirt. In the middle of this we have our Thanksgiving as well. I believe finding accommodation in the area is very difficult too, maybe I should rent out a room – I don’t think. Having someone returning late at night drunk out of their gourd would not be pleasant.  I think we will just stay clear of it all as we usually do.

Over the weekend they showed The African Queen on TV, with no ads. I wasn’t going to watch it having seen it several times, however, mThe African Queeny attention was attracted because Alex Trebek of Jeopardy fame was doing the introduction and telling us how the director made sure to film it in Africa and how he picked a small river with little traffic to use for the setting. Alex certainly peaked my interest so I watched it after all. Considering it was made in the early 50’s it really wasn’t bad as far as the effects went. The acting of Bogey and Hepburn was brilliant of course and I really enjoyed seeing it once again. Something I didn’t realise, Bogey’s part was supposed to be an Englishman but he couldn’t do the accent so they changed it to a Canadian.

I made this recently and finished it last night. I decided it would be good to share with you as, at least in this part of the world, it is getting to the time where we need warming foods to eat.

White Chilli

1 Tbs Butterwhite chilli
2 med onions, chopped
2 4 oz cans green chopped green chillies (mild)
4   15 oz cans any kind of white beans (Navy, Pinto, Great Northern, etc.), un-drained
6 tsp chicken bouillon granules (or
6 chicken bouillon cubes)
2 bean cans water
2 tsp ground cumin
3 tsp chopped cilantro
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or more to taste
3 cooked chicken breasts, torn into bite sized pieces
Shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. In a 4 1/2 quart (or larger) saucepan, cook onion in butter until soft, add bouillon, beans, water and chillies.  Simmer till heated through (and bouillon cubes are dissolved if using cubes) - about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Then stir in cayenne pepper, cilantro, cumin and chicken and simmer again to let flavours mingle and everything is heated through.  Serve with shredded Monterey Jack cheese on top.

Servings: 4

  1. I specifically planned my trip to Germany last year to arrive in Munich after the Oktoberfest was over. And yes, prices of dirndls and lederhosen in store windows was unbelievable. Especially for children who outgrow them so fast.

    1. Sensible. I was actually talking about the price here in Canada, I hadn't really thought about them in Munich. I would think putting kids into clothes like that would be a bit stupid. Although of course once upon a time they were worn every day.

  2. October just began? How can it be over already?
Never heard of white chilli before.

    1. That was my reaction Alex.

You should try it, it's very good. Not as hot and spicy as regular chilli though.

  3. If it's not hot and spicy, then I could eat it. I have such a weak stomach.

I've never watched The African Queen. My mom loved that movie though.

    1. You'd have to leave out the chicken of course.

You should, it is an excellent movie.

  4. I love all things chili, but have never heard of a white one. Even if it's not as spicy, I'll have to try it.

Also, I love Oktoberfest, because I've been getting to drink so many different limited release Oktoberfest beers. I'll be sad when they're gone.

    1. You could always spice it up but it would change the colour if you weren't careful.

Not a beer drinker anyway so wouldn't interest me. The food round here is about twice the normal price during Oktoberfest.

  5. With MicroBreweries springing up all over England I think our interest in European Oktoberfest/fayres has waned. We have 2 MBs within walking distance and they serve 'real ales' for beer connoisseurs - no lager allowed! We are going to Belgium and Holland for a few days next week so no doubt 'himself' will avail himself of some local brews.
White Chilli sounds interesting .. the weather has turned nasty today so will be looking for some warming meals very soon

    1. We have a micro brewery locally too. Never tried their beers, Matt hasn't either. Where in Belgium and Holland. Belgium used to be my stomping ground when I was in my late teens, early 20s.

We enjoy white chilli very much.

  6. I went to Oktoberfest at the Puyallup Fairgrounds a few years ago. That was fun listening to the oompa bands and watching people dance. Now I have to go look up the cost of lederhosen as I'm curious to see the prices!

    1. Canada's more expensive than the States JoJo. Matt hates oompa bands

  7. Our city just held several Octoberfest celebrations and it's something I steer clear of due to drunken louts. Sound like a cranky old woman don't I? It's true though, people go silly.

    1. I 100% agree with you Pinky, drunken louts abound at Oktoberfest. Don't know if it's improved because of drinking and driving. Probably not.

  8. I'm a big fan of white chili and yours sounds delicious! Old movies are sometimes the best ones around, and Octoberfest isn't over until November, imho :)

    1. Hope you try it and like it. I agree, it's not November yet.

  9. One would assume Oktoberfest lasts through October. Thus the name. I'm pretty sure we have activities throughout the month for it around here.

Mm, that recipe sounds good. I don't trust green chillies, though. You're sure those are mild? Smiles.

    1. Well it only lasts a week round here, thank goodness.

If you buy the small cans of green chillies, I promise you it is very mild.
