Japanese Fusion, Flying.

teppenyaki grillI am not sure how long it has been there now, but there is a relatively new restaurant in town. Dake Japanese Fusion Restaurant. When I first saw it I was immediately interested but we haven’t yet been. The have all kinds of things on their menus but they also do Teppenyaki. I decided I would like to go there for lunch and have booked a place at a Teppenyaki grill. A couple of friends are going with us. If you have never been, several people sit up at the bar and the chef cooks the food on the hotplate in front of you. Usually the chefs make a bit of a performance of it and it is great fun. If you check out the link, the menu is shown for the grill. Also pictures of the restaurant.

Dunno about you, but everyone I speak to lately has sworn off flying anywhere. I am not keen on the idea myself either, although statistically it is supposed to be very safe. However, with planes crashing and others being shot down, it does make one somewhat nervous. They never have solved the disappearance of the original missing Malaysian flight either. I think the families must be distraught.

I posted puppy pictures the other day, my friend now has her puppy and she has been posting pictures on Facebook. The puppy's name is Zoey.

Here’s something interesting for ice cream lovers. All the way from Sussex, England. I certainly must give this a try. British single cream is probably equivalent to our whipping cream and caster sugar is the same as our regular sugar. Not sure where one buys rock salt but no doubt I can find some.

Homemade Ice cream in 5 minutes

Recipe by: MegStone

Here’s how to make home made ice cream. It tastes AMAZING and the best part, it only takes 5 MINUTES to make! This fast, simple and fun recipe is perfect not only for a dinner party that forgot the pudding, it's a last minute life saver! But it equally would win any school's science competition since it's a scientific wonder! Great fun Homemade Ice Creamfor kids on a rainy day too. Try this at home, you won't believe it works until you try it! And it makes the best tasting ice cream ever.

Ingredients

Serves: 1
  • 225g coarse rock salt
  • 1 large mugful of crushed ice
  • 150ml single cream
  • 4 tablespoons caster sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Equipment:
  • 1 large plastic, sealable bag
  • 1 medium plastic, sealable bag

Preparation method

Prep: 5 mins
1.
Place the ice and salt in the large, plastic sealable bag.
2.
In the medium sized bag, pour in the cream, sugar and vanilla. Seal tightly.
3.
Place the smaller bag inside the larger bag and seal the larger bag completely.
4.
Shake the bag vigorously, up and down and side to side for 4 to 5 minutes.
5.
Unseal the bags and scoop out the ice cream and serve. Perfect ice cream in 5 minutes!
Tip
You can freeze your ice cream when it's ready, just keep it in the medium-sized bag and place in the freezer!
Tip
Why not try adding chocolate chips? Or make chocolate ice cream? Just add the ingredients in with the cream and sugar and start shaking!

Have a great day
Jo

  1. Having been based in Japan for a while I got to like most of their cuisine except any raw fish dishes (sashimi or sushi). I love veggies cooked in tempura batter. Hope you enjoy your lunch. We have a chain called Yo Sushi in the UK which started up about 15 years ago and has gone from strength to strength - they even have small Yo Sushi bars in our major airports.

Zoey looks a real cutie ... what breed is she?

Must try this fast ice recipe - as you say its great if dessert needed in a hurry but ice chips isn't something we Brits usually have in stock. I'll email you separately with our fast ice-cream basic recipe. Low fat/sugar tastes wonderful (no stirring etc required but not as fast as this one as doesn't have ice chips to speed it up).

    1. I love sushi and sashimi. Don't get the raw fish here though, way to far from the source. Have eaten it in coastal towns of the US and always enjoyed it. Not Japanese, but I had a wonderful meal at Heathrow last time I was there which included fresh oysters. Yummy.

She's an Australian Shepherd. That is, if fact an American breed.

I will be interested in your recipe for ice cream Sue.

  2. My dad got rock salt for his ice cream at the hardware store, but it might be hard to find when it's not winter. That puppy is so CUTE!!!!!!!!! And I'm with you, if I never have to get on a plane again it'll be too soon. It's a relief to be back east for many reasons, not the least of which is that I don't have to fly here to visit anymore.

    1. Never thought of that.

The puppy is gorgeous isn't she.

We sure are not planning to fly anywhere ourselves.

You'll enjoy having the meal cooked in front of you. We go to a place like that all the time.

  5. Those Japanese grills are fun. I mean, where else can I watch a man throw eggs into his hat with a spatula AND get a nice meal?

    1. Hmm, not sure about an egg, seen them throw a shrimp tail or two. I like the idea of an egg though presents a super picture.

  7. I adore sushi and love going to sushi train restaurants. Vegetables in tempura are quite yummy too. Do you originate from Sussex? That where my paternal relatives live!

    1. Me too. Nope, I was born in Cheshire which is near Manchester very much north of Sussex. Moved to Kent after WWII which is right next to Sussex. I did live in Sussex for a while some 45 or so years ago

  12. I would do the ice cream bags for school picnics- kids really enjoy it (but remember to have them bring gloves!)

Never been to a fusion restaurant. And flying is scary period. I'll do it when I need to, but I'd rather take a car. And I know the stats too. But still...it's scary!

    1. A good idea but you would have to cart ice with you too. Gloves is a very good idea.

Going for dinner tomorrow. Don't suppose we will be flying again any time soon.

  13. I feel so sorry for all those on either of the two Malaysian Airlines planes. How especially distressing to have had loved ones on either, but in the case of MH17, to be left lying out in the open in a war zone--urk! Don't see how you'd get over that anytime soon.

Meanwhile, back to the land of the living where food is sooo important. I must make that ice cream. Sounds amazing.

    1. Yeah, but then they put them in a refrigerated plane and the refrigeration breaks down!!!!! The whole thing is terrible. And can you imagine not having any idea what happened to your loved ones on that first plane?

      And so easy.

  15. I hope you'll let us know your experience at the teppenyaki bar after you've had a chance to go and eat there.

    The puppy is so cute.

I won't fly anymore. I think it's been about 17 years since I last flew.

At one time I had a recipe where you could use two coffee cans in place of the bags to make ice cream. The kids could sit on the floor and roll it back and forth to each other to pass the time until you had ice cream.
