Summer, Grocery Store,

Tanning GatorMaybe summer has come at last. I spent 20 minutes on our balcony and found it way too hot for sunbathing. I keep thinking of the song I mentioned before, June is Busting Out All Over. It certainly seems to be here at the moment. We are both very careful about sunbathing but we like to get a little colour and a dose of Vitamin D. Unfortunately our balcony isn’t really suitable for getting backs and backs of legs done.

The other day when in our grocery store, Zehrs, I bought some of their mini Mini Naannaan bread which I had seen advertised on TV. Monday I got round to eating it. I enjoyed it, I ate some with smoked salmon on for lunch and then had the other one (two in a pack) with soup at supper time. However, I don’t think I would bother again. Once upon a time I used to make a lot of curries which is where one would normally serve naan bread, but since I lost my sense of smell, I basically can’t taste curry Triangoliany more which is a big disappointment as I used to love them and all the trimmings which go with them. I have made them once in a while, but not as frequently as I once did. Funnily enough I have never eaten naan bread before despite all the curries I have consumed in my life time. I did like it with the soup. I must say our local grocery is introducing a lot of different products these days. I am sure I mentioned their Triangoli which are triangular ravioli stuffed with a rich truffle mushroom filling. Amongst other things they have sushi which was introduced when we were in NC. We’ve bought it a few times, considering they cannot use raw fish (too far from the sea), it’s not bad. There are lots of other things which I haven’t had a chance to check out (Matt does the shopping at 7 a.m. and I refuse to get up so early) but I did spot a Kimchi Noodle Soup packet which I bought and haven’t yet tried.

Here is yet another asparagus recipe. For those of you who don’t enjoy asparagus, you haven’t much longer – just til the end of the month.

Roasted Asparagus with Garlic-Lemon Sauce

2 bunches asparagus (about 2 pounds), trimmedRoasted Asparagus Garlic Lemon Sauce
2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1/8 tsp salt
2 Tbs low-fat mayonnaise
2 Tbs shredded Parmesan cheese
2 Tbs water
2 anchovy fillets, minced
1 small clove garlic, minced
1 Tbs lemon juice
2 chopped hard-boiled eggs

1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
2. Toss asparagus with oil and salt in a large bowl. Spread on a baking sheet and roast, stirring once halfway through, until tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Combine mayonnaise, Parmesan, water, anchovies, garlic and lemon juice in a small bowl. To serve, drizzle the asparagus with the sauce and top with hard-boiled egg (if using).
Servings: 4

  1. You lost your sense of smell? I'm sorry. Although in some cases, I'm sure that's a blessing.

    1. Actually no, I would be happy to be able to smell skunks and other similar noxious odours. It makes an incredible difference in one's life, particularly food tastes.

  2. I didn't know you lost your sense of smell. That would bum me out so much....although from a dieting standpoint it would be good. Usually I snack because I want a taste of something. If I can't smell or taste, what's the point. :(

    1. Oh I can still taste things, I just don't have the broad range that most people have. Snacking is still a problem because sweet (chocolate etc.), salt (chips) still taste good amongst other things.

  4. One of our main grocery stores sells pre-packaged sushi, which I've tried, and it's OK. The other one has chefs right there who make it all day, and will give you a full piece as a sample. Yum!
I, too, am sorry you've lost your sense of smell. That makes it so hard to taste things correctly. Any chance of it coming back? I know some medicines affect it...My dad lost his sense of smell a long time ago, and now his hearing in one ear with the Parkinson's.

    1. Our grocery store makes it there fresh ever day, never asked for a sample so don't know what they would give me.

It's around 16 years since I lost my sense of smell, maybe longer, so I am used to it now. Don't know why it happened and nobody seems to know anything about curing it. Sorry about your dad. Friend has been suffering from hearing loss for a while but luckily it's coming back. Another friend went blind a few years ago because of some illness. No telling what will happen to you.

  5. We can also buy Miso Soup--instant--I really like it,but have not made it from scratch, never cooked Tofu. My parents would be amazed at the variety of foods in the grocery stores these days. And we have a Trader Joe's (2) here in Denver now. I am in heaven just walking around. Yesterday I bought Asparagus, (of course),small cucumbers, frozen chopped garlic in little cubes, peaches, and more and then next door where they sell wines and liquor--bought two bottle of organic wine with no sulfites, and my favorite--Limoncello from Italy..

    1. Yes we can, not tried it though, will have to now. I have cooked Tofu but not often. Not familiar with Trader Joe's, sounds good. I have never tried Limoncello although I have seen it advertised. I expect they have it in our liquor stores, never looked. Never tried organic wine either, don't think I have ever heard of it before.

  6. Hi Jo,

Naan bread, of course, is a very common food item sold in Britain. I'm lucky that my sense of smell is intact and I really enjoy a hot and spicy vindaloo.

I wish I liked asparagus. Never mind, eh.

    Take care, Jo,

    Gary

    1. Dunno about BC but we don't have much in the way of Indian restaurants here. Not like it is in the UK. I can enjoy a hot and spicy vindaloo but it's not quite the same flavour to me any more.

I wish you did too Gary, it's so good for you.

      Take care yourself.

  7. I'm glad to hear you've retained some sense of taste. It would be tragic for a master chef such as yourself to completely lose your sense of taste. I wonder if your sense of smell will ever come back? Strange things happen both ways:)

    1. I can but hope so Pinky. Thanks for the Master Chef designation. Wish I were. I would love to have attended the Cordon Bleu in Paris or the local Liaison College. My mother was actually better than me.

I hope so all the time, but after so long it seems unlikely - don't even know why it happened, belong to a group of others (of which there are lots by the way) and some people have even become suicidal from losing their sense of smell. Doctors don't seem to care very much.
