The 4th, CPAP, Bowling, Dwarf Tossing, Naked Intruder.

The 4th
To all my American friends, wherever you live, have a wonderful 4th of July. I miss being part of the celebrations, we used to have such fun when we lived in North Carolina.

Nasal PillowI have been endeavouring to encourage Tina at Life is Good, she now has a CPAP machine but isn’t doing very well with it. Her mask is a nose only version, but it Nasal Pillow2appears she is suffering from claustrophobia so I suggested she tries out what they call a nasal pillow. When I went for my last sleep over, there was a woman there with a nasal pillow which appeared to be made of foam, I didn’t get a proper look at it but she assured us that it was so very comfortable and she had never had any problems using it.  Poor Tina is subjected to dreams of drowning and other such problems and is sure not sleeping well. Mind you I guess if she is dreaming it means she is asleep. Myself I migrated to a nose and mouth mask which I have little or no trouble with at all and I can open my mouth or not with no problems. I also sleep well and am becoming less tired during the day.

Hey, I actually bowled pretty well yesterday, at long last I got some Dwarvesreasonable scores, I actually threw a few strikes so I was patting myself on the back. However, I have found that it isn’t any good as practice for dwarf tossing. If you follow Al Diaz’s blog Father Dragon Writes you will know what I am talking about. The champion dwarf tosser is apparently Jeff Hargett, known as Sir Jeff,  but I am challenging him during Father Dragon’s birthday celebrations in August. These are two I am borrowing from Narnia. You don’t have to be nuts, but it helps.

Weird, a man in Vancouver discovered a naked man in his kitchen egg-yolksfrying up eggs. Seems he had already had a shower and was making himself a bite to eat!! The home owner apparently frightened the intruder and he ran off. The police apprehended him shortly after and say they think drugs were involved. Bit of a shock, surprises me the home owner didn’t hear him having a shower.

Usually I find it difficult to get pork tenderloin recipes, suddenly they are everywhere and we have none. We have to go to Costco any day now and do some re-stocking. Apart from anything else, they do great pork tenderloins.

Pork Tenderloin With Grilled Peach-Ginger Chutney

WebMD Recipe from EatingWell.com

Fruit on the grill is a wonderful pleasure - the natural sugars caramelize as the juices are seared inside. Combined in a ginger sauce, grilled peaches are a fantastic condiment for pork.

Ingredients
2 medium peaches
4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1-1 1/4 pounds pork tenderloin, trimmed of fat
1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon salt, divided
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh ginger
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
2 tablespoons rice vinegar

Instructions
  1. Preheat grill to high.
  2. Peel peaches (see Tip). Cut in half and remove the pits. Brush the cut sides with 2 teaspoons oil.
  3. Brush pork with the remaining 2 teaspoons oil; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Grill the pork, turning occasionally, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 160°F, 14 to 18 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, place the peaches, cut-side down, on the grill rack. Grill, turning occasionally, until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the pork and peaches to a cutting board. Let the peaches cool slightly while the pork rests.
  5. Whisk ginger, brown sugar, vinegar and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Chop the peaches and add them to the ginger sauce; stir to combine. Slice the pork on the diagonal into 8 pieces. Serve topped with the peach chutney.

Tip: To peel peaches: Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil. Immerse peaches in boiling water for 1 minute. Remove with a slotted spoon and plunge into a bowl of ice water to cool slightly. Transfer to a cutting board. Remove the skins with a paring knife.

Have a great day

  1. Hi Jo
David was bored and I was busy on Monday so I printed out the tenderloin recipe with apple you posted recently and asked him to cook Dinner.

The flavours were brilliant ... but David asked (and I have to agree) why bother baking it in the oven for the last 10-15 mins?

We'll definitely make it again as the combination of flavours was lovely, but will do everything on the hob and replace the roasting stage by slicing the browned/partly cooked tenderloin and putting it back in the pan with the cooked apple/onion

This recipe sounds pretty good - I love anything with fresh ginger in it

    1. You are so right Sue, that does sound reasonable. I didn't cook it myself, Matt did, but in future that's what we'll do, will adjust my copy of the recipe to reflect the change.

  2. Didn't know Tina or you were unwell. Take care of yourself, Jo. Will stop over at Tina's blog.

  3. Good luck beating Jeff in the Dwarf tossing!
I better be the only naked man in my kitchen.

  4. How long did it take for you to become used to the mask, Jo? I am now using O2 just at night, with a low rate and am slowly getting better at using it. I am sleeping better. Am trying to think positively about the whole thing.

    1. And thank you for the 4th of July wishes. No private fireworks here in Colorado, but we will step out on our deck this evening to see them from the meadows at Castle Rock.

    2. From what you have written on Tina's blog and mine, it sounds like you have a different system. http://www.sleeprestfully.com/images/Icon_Premo.jpg will show you a pic of the one I am using. I have it on the bedside cupboard and it hardly makes any noise at all. It is set by the Sleep Management Group to a pressure of 10 and a humidity of 6 (that I can change, not the pressure). I started with a nose mask, slept OK but found I did better with the full mask. I have no problems sleeping especially with the CPAP pillow which has cut out sides to allow for the mask.

    3. I should also say, I have only had the machine for about a month.

  5. Those Narnian dwarves should do nicely. The best dwarf tossing scores are achieved when the dwarf has practiced extensively with the tosser. Unlike the intruder fellow you mentioned, all dwarves and tossers must remain fully clothed at all times. Them's the rules. :)

    1. Glad about that, wouldn't want to strip. Not my thing at all.

  7. Dwarf tossing is not easy, Jo. A lot of practice is required if you're not a dragon. But don't worry. I know you'll be a worthy adversary for Jeff.
Now I wonder what would I do if I would catch a naked guy on my kitchen. Probably roast him. Very dangerous thing getting in a cave with two dragons and several crazy dwarves, a butchering parrot and a shredder Chihuahua dog. :D

    1. I will certainly try.

Any person who was stupid enough to enter a dragon's kitchen illegally would deserve anything he got.

    1. I am told practising with the same dwarves helps. I am not having any real problems with my CPAP and am sleeping very well, not so for Tina though.

In the kitchen Hilary, in the Kitchen. Thanks for the good wishes.

  9. Thanks so much Jo for encouraging me with this mention. I feel loved. I do have a feeling you will beat me in dwarf tossing though. I haven't had enough time to practice...

    1. Well as Father Dragon and Sir Jeff both tell me practice is important, I don't think you will do too well Tina. Next time perhaps.

Keep on with the CPAP I am so hoping it will work for you.
