R is for Rice Pudding, Chat, Whole Lotta Hash.

We thoroughly enjoyed our bowling banquet last night, it was great seeing all our friends including some we hadn’t seen last year and one we hadn’t seen in a couple of years. We even won a couple of draw prizes, most unusual for us. Afterwards we went to friends for a drink and ended up getting home at midnight. Therefore, this blog is somewhat shortened.

Isn’t it odd how things happen all together. I had to make a doctor’s appointment for Matt to get a prescription, the only day I could get was the one where we have arranged to go visit Reid Candy and Nuts (see yesterday) and then I discovered I have a doc appointment myself (different office) that day. Just as well I was looking at that day as I hadn’t marked it down on the calendar I print up every month. The trouble is all these things take place in Cambridge which is at least half an hour’s drive away, and far enough apart to warrant coming home again, at least in the morning. Well at least I should be able to console myself up by eating a couple of chocolates, LOL.

Story in the news yesterday, a huge drug bust in Montreal where they found 43 Drug Busttonnes of hash. That is worth $860 million which is a hell of a lot of hash. This article has a few comparisons as to size, the one that really hit me was 29 Beluga Whales. That’s enough to supply every resident in a city of 10,000 with a daily dose for 11 years. Nine men have been arrested in the sting. According to the article the drugs are being sent through Pakistan for distribution in Montreal and Halifax, Nova Scotia. There is a video on the site too.

This is one of my favourite desserts and one I love to prepare although so many of my dinner guests have now eaten it that I will have to put the recipe away for a while.

Almond Rice Pudding

1 cup (250 ml) waterAlmond Rice Pudding
1/2 cup (125 ml) long-grain rice, rinsed
A 3-inch (8 cm) piece of orange rind
A pinch of salt
4 cups (1 L) milk
1 cup (250 ml) sugar
1/4 cup (60 ml) ground blanched almonds
2 egg yolks, well beaten
Ground cinnamon for garnish

Combine the water, rice, orange rind, and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes. Discard the orange rind (I never do this, I like the pieces of rind) and add the milk, sugar, and almonds.

2. Cook uncovered over low heat until the milk has been absorbed, 55 to 60 minutes. Stir in the egg yolks and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish or individual bowls or cups. Serve warm, chilled, or at room temperature, garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Servings: 6

Have a great day

Jo

  3. I love Rice pudding. I would have never thought of Orange rind but that would add a nice touch of flavor.

Yay, on the good times with old friends!
