Friggatriskaidekaphobia, Teeny Frog, Sledding Crow.

From the fact that didn’t even mention it yesterday, I guess you will Friday 13have realised I don’t even think about Friday 13 or friggatriskaidekaphobia which is the fear of that date (frigga being the Norse goddess for whom Friday was named) Wikipedia have a lot more information about it if you are interested. Its odd really, because I am superstitious about a lot of things, I will NOT cut my nails on a Sunday (for Matt’s mom it was Friday) I will not accept salt from someone’s hand, it has to go on the table. I knock on wood and throw spilt salt over my shoulder, but Friday 13 has never meant much to me. Sia McKye’s guest author yesterday in Thoughts OVER COFFEE (see link this page), details a lot about her suspicions too, some of which I had heard of, some not.

Another blogger friend of mine, Glenda Larke, in her blog Tropic Temper, wrote about a frog who wandered into her house which reminded me I had intended to write about the smallest frog in the world. This article from the Guardian in the UK The-worlds-smallest-verte-006is all about this minute creature which was discovered in Papua, New Guinea. It is the smallest vertebrate or animal with a spine.  In fact they discovered two new frog species at the same time according to the article. As you will see in the picture, it is sitting on a dime which is a 10 cent piece if you are not familiar with our currency and a very small coin. For the British its about the same size as a sixpence used to be. The frog has been named Paedophryne amauensis. They say New Guinea is ripe with undiscovered species. I don’t know about you, I kind of wondered how they found this frog without stepping on it.

I decided to go with Matt to the bowling alley yesterday; I so wanted to bowl watching everyone do so, but I didn’t of course, I am nowhere near well enough yet. I have no doubt I will be as fit as a fiddle at the end of the month when I start having ultra sounds and CT scans!!! Before we went out I decided to chuck stuff together to make a chili. I haven’t made chili in a long time for some reason. No idea why. Been fancying one for a few days now so just made a really simple one for supper last night. It wasn’t bad.

This next is the most incredible piece of video, a crow purposely sledding down a roof. The article with it is here they say science cannot explain this.

I have just been reading how good tomato soup is for one’s arteries. However, they don’t mean the high salt varieties that come in a can. I make tomato soup all the time, usually in large batches to freeze – this is how.

Tomato Soup

1 sweet onion, choppedTomato Soup2

1 tbs olive oil

2 cloves garlic (chopped or crushed, don’t use the pre-chopped or minced stuff)

1 large can of plum tomatoes

1 pack of liquid bouillon (or homemade stock if you have it, even better)

Seasoning to taste

12 fresh basil leaves, chopped.

Sauté the onion in the oil and then add the garlic. When they are translucent add the tomatoes (I usually break up the fruit before adding it to the pan), then the stock or bouillon and the basil. Simmer for about half an hour. Cool somewhat then blend. Test for seasoning and either serve or freeze. When serving you can add sour cream swirled on top or basil pesto which intensifies the basil flavour.

Have a great weekend

Jo

  1. It must have been the week for frogs. I'd just read Glenda's blog when I found a tiny frog by my garden pond yesterday not much bigger than the one you wrote about but mine was a baby. No doubt it had grown from one of the many tadpoles busily feeding in the pool.
